Meteor Entertainment, SOE, And Gazillion Show Off At PAX

Digging our PAX Prime 2012 coverage? Here are some more highlights from our time in Seattle in easy-to-digest, bite-sized chunks:

Hawken

I wanted to play Hawken, I really did. But I just couldn’t.

It looks spectacular, and the crowds that were permanently gathered around the too-small Meteor Entertainment booth attested to its popularity. Quite simply, it just looks and feels like a ‘mech game should. I’m not a huge fan of the genre, but even if I don’t play, I’d just like to watch.

Here’s hoping for a bigger booth next year – and I think that’s a distinct possibility.

PlanetSide 2

With the NDA dropping the first day of the show, SOE was free to tout PlanetSide 2 to all comers, and that included tapping Total Biscuit – an admitted PlanetSide fanboy – for some livestreaming action from the booth.

After my play session on Tuesday, there wasn’t much else to learn, though I did chat briefly with Lead Designer Matt Higby, who said that the biggest challenges facing the team now was to make group play easier and make the game more accessible to new players.

Higby also agreed with my notion that you can still contribute to your team as a driver or support class even if you can’t shoot straight, while also filling me in that his favorite class was the light assault, either flying solo or in a New Conglomerate Reaver. We VC fans might have a thing or two to say about that…

Marvel Heroes

There are two words to describe Marvel Heroes: “Superhero Diablo.” Take that for what it is, good or bad.

I got in a good 10 minutes or so at the Gazillion booth playing as Wolverine, hacking and slashing my way through waves of enemies, a Sentinel, and Magneto himself. You’ve got three attack abilities, which you can swap out between battles, a consumable healing item, and two basic attacks, mapped to the left and right mouse buttons.

If you like Diablo-style gameplay and Marvel superheroes, the game should appeal to you. Magneto wasn’t too difficult, once I got used to his attacks, but I’m sure group challenges will be tougher. Closed beta starts Oct. 1, so you’ll get the chance to take your favorite heroes for a spin in just under a month.

Sweet article but it’s too bad we couldn’t have gotten a bit of B roll for each of the 3 games.

Hawken is the best-looking and feeling Mech Game I’ve seen
    (made with Unreal 3 !!)
It’s a very small team based out of Lost Angeles,

I think most of the Art Design is the work of one individual.
