Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley recently announced PlanetSide 2’s plans going forward, the reason why gamers should have PS2 on their radar, and the additional support for an Australian server.
In his blog he makes the clear stance that the F2P PlanetSide 2 will be supported for a very long time.
We have games that have run for over 13 years, so when we’re making PlanetSide 2 we aren’t looking at what it’s like in 2012. We’re thinking about a game we plan to have running in 2025.
He goes on to say that PS2 has been built from the ground up to support 2000 players fighting in an active persistent resource/territorial world.
From this players can expect an immersive world – complete with day/night cycle and unique terrain to that continent –the ability to build squads of 12 leading all the way to an outfit of over 300 players fighting at the same time for resources, territory, or sheer fun.
The game will utilize a certification system to allow players to customize their play style and character.
This system is a combination of the deep skills in a game like Eve Online combined with runes and masteries in League of Legends combined with unlocks in more traditional FPS games.
Smedley also points out the game will not have an “end”. This is a massively multiplayer game where territory can change based on the players actions.
Lastly he mentions the feel of the game is very familiar to other shooters and that the community will build a lasting impact on players. Getting to log into your character and seeing these familiar faces and voices will build a connection to the game and to these new friends.
And if all this wasn’t sweet enough, Smedley tweeted news that Australian players will be getting a server of their very own!
With the game being free-to-play and all these nice options in the mix, we may actually see SOE continue to support the game long into the future.
