SWTOR expands support territory, server population debate continues

We knew this was coming.

Star Wars: The Old Republic expanded its reach to eastern Europe and the Middle East, further growing its population according to the article on the official website.

In the on-going debate between analysts, developers, and gamers, sides have been blurred as to who is telling the truth about health of SWTOR‘s server population. As stated previously, Cowen and Company, a respected financial firm, stated that the MMO’s population is on a decline, specifically stating that the 1.7 million subscribers will be the most the game will see and that by the end of March 2013 will have 1.25 million.

Lead Designer Daniel Erickson bit back at those statements by saying that there has been a drop in concurrent population but subs remain the same.

What does this recent expansion into new territory do for the subscription numbers? We know that every time SWTOR opens in a new market (first US and EU, then the Pacific) that the subscription numbers shoot through the roof.

What does this do for the overall health of the game? Will we see increased concurrent users or has that time come and gone?

There’s no debate, it’s just how well can BW spin it.
    Investors say, brace yourself
    Players say, where is everyone
Stat sites say, down down down
And BW says, are you going to believe me or your lying eyes?

I personally am very hopeful for SWTOR. Many people fail to remember that Blizzard could of only dreamed of these kind of numbers after they launched. The game just got to where the developers felt it should of been at launch with 1.2 as evidenced by the 30 free days we all just received. Once they fix a good portion of the bugs still in the game (ever get super glued to the floor in the spawn area of a War zone after getting killed?) you will see a higher active population base. However, many people understand that these kind of things will get fixed based upon the number of active subscriptions versus active players. The main thing to remember is to give the game time and it will get better, not everything is the end of the world people.

We didn’t ALL get 30 free days, BTW.

This marketing spin is the BS EA/Mythic spewed when WH Online was tanking.

SWTOR just lacks the uniqueness, they made an MMO of an IP that should’ve been leas modeled after the WoW style setup, I mean shooter classes with guns and bombs, lightsaber based jedi combat; this game would’ve made much more sense if more action based or went the third person shooter FPS style feel.

Even digressing on that part of my idea, it still even with the WoW/Eq model of MMORPG design, the features simply aren’t new and original, they aren’t necessarily an improvement on most fronts and lack some basic functionality of other MMO features having and using with success.

If I was Bioware I would be quick to chase the pretty much only leg up they are likely to have on others in their game and work to getting the space combat much more developed, story driven and thoroughly designed as possible, they have mentioned plans to add a lot on that front, if they can parallel their game with other unique gameplay they have a chance.

The game doesn’t suck by any means maybe bringing it to places where this type of MMO isn’t so typical or wanted may do some good.

Yeah audio sync seems to be a problem often either minor, this being very noticeable.

Swtor population healthy overall?  Debatable/probably.  Swtor population healthy per server…no.  Anyone who does not see the timing of this release to correspond with the investor call/sub number release is clearly burring their head in the sand.  I don’t think we will see hard numbers for awhile as BW will continue to drop the price of the game, give free weekends, give free months, give free..free.free….please sub to our game!!
