There are some fun things to pick up in Tyria.

While making my way through the recent Guild Wars 2 beta weekend, I happened to get a fun little item in the shape of the Asuran Butler Golem. As far as I know this is the first time this cool little contraption has been seen out in the wild — or hanging out in Divinity’s Reach.

The golem gives you access to merchant services, your tradeskills, trait resets and a bunch of other useful facilities.

What pleases me most about the design is how utterly Asuran it is, with us not being able to play them in the recent beta, it’s cool to get a glimpse of the style of tech that we might see in the future. Fun, quirky and useful, it is exactly what I would expect from the diminutive golemancers.

       bahaha :)

  • https://www.youtube.com/user/Scyfo100 Scyfo aka Funkay

Oh wow! I love it :) Thanks for showing us this Scott!

    • ScottHawkes

       My pleasure, thanks Scyfo.

      • Cirdi

Yes, Thank you Scott for all the hard work you do to bring us the juicy news of GW2.  omg cannot WAIT.  Lemme me in now!  My golem awaits! :)

  • https://www.youtube.com/user/Scyfo100 Scyfo aka Funkay

When you pressed self destruct did that kill him permanently or did you get him back in your bags?

    • JJGlyph

I think they are consumable items like the Summon Merchant in GW1. You’ll likely get them around the world and also be able to buy them in cash shop. They were easy to get in GW1 I have over 1000 of them in storage.

  • QSatu

Isn’t this thing timed items (3/5/x days) you can buy in cash shop?

  • http://twitter.com/Master10K Master10K

    Well that was new.

     Slavinator. My Golem Butler.

  • jazzbrownie

Too bad you can only use this guy for 5 days with both the deluxe and collector’s editions.  Probably have to buy him in the cash shop to keep him around permanently…  it’s one of the reasons I just got the standard edition.

    • Cirdi

Jazz, I was thinking same thing.  I just got the plain game since it only lasts 5 days (bummer).  If it’s in the shop I’ll get it for sure.  Great minds think alike! :)

    • VT100

The ones bought at the cash shop will probably also have a limited duration.

      • JJGlyph

That would be pretty lame but I wouldn’t be surprised.

        • VT100

IMO, the lame part is the “5 day duration”, which seems to suggest that if you use them once, they will disappear after 5 days (even if you don’t use them again), or at least that you have just used up one “day”, even if you don’t use it again on that day.

I’d be fine with a limited number of uses, but it should be based on actual usage, not just time (ex., you can call the golem 30 times, or have it active for a total of 60 minutes, then it “runs out of power” and you need to buy a new one). That’s the way some TCG WoW items work (pet biscuits, temporary mini-mounts, etc.).

They could also have a more expensive version that would self-recharge, with a longer cooldown between uses (ex., 6 hours) but which would last forever.

    • Jado Cast

I can’t imagine they would waste time making an item that is only usable for five days just for pre-purchase.  I’m sure they will be in the cash shop, or at least some variation.  The question is, if it is in the cash shop, how long do they last, and how many gems are they going to cost us?

  • http://twitter.com/Naqaj Naqaj

Are you certain this isn’t under NDA, as it relates to the cash shop?

    • jericho256

Was my first thought too as it was quite loudly spoken by other press (including Mike B) that Cash Shop and items within it were quite clearly part of the NDA and could not be spoken of.

That being said, it could be that Anet released the NDA on the Golem specifically because it is part of the “consumable” items that are part of the Digital Deluxe and Physical Collector’s Edition sets that went on sale on Tuesday.  After all, I was still fairly surprised that Anet themselves has not released media on ANY of the digital items for these sets.

      • JJGlyph

This can be obtained from drops in-game is the rumor. Not sure if this is the exact butler golem that appears in the cash-shop.

  • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Can more than one person use the Golem? Can a group use the Golem?  Picked up my GW2 standard digital edition yesterday, didn’t see anything worth spending the extra bucks on the deluxe digital edition. With SWTOR, the deluxe edition included a mount, made it easy getting mounts for all my alts.

    Wow, awesome self-destruct animation.

    • JJGlyph

Didn’t notice that the first time. That was quite awesome^^

    • ScottHawkes

       It is rather fun.

    nice!!!!

    Lol, amazing

  • Steven Becker

Why the hell are all the people using the Inventory if ArenaNet actually implemented the really nice thing that you see the all useable items within the actual window, like here in the Account Vault where your hole Inventory is on the left inside that window… I don’t get it, really…

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/2SZI7MOKR6OET3R6YXZJQC5WGQ John Athon

I think you have to pay for the butler golem with real money.

    • ScottHawkes

The main reason I used it was I hadn’t slept in two days and my brain was functioning with the speed and clarity of porridge. It is a very nice function to have the items in the window. It’s also one of the functions that you don’t expect as it isn’t used in most MMOs. Hence requiring a basic level of cognitive functioning I hadn’t got at the time.

  • Jay

Those people at ANet sure are creative.

  • 1970Hendrix1970

I s this the guy you get from prepurchasing or is he buildable through a profession like the one in WoW that engineers build? Is he a 1 hour Cooldown style skill or can you call him anytime? Is he like every merchant rolled into one and capable of selling many differnt materials and supply items? There were alot of unanswered questions in this preview. He seems to do alot more then his WoW equivalent though which is nice. I only wish we could have gotten more info. Also is it just me or are the Asurans lazy… they make their battle suits and butlers look exactly the same thats a little odd. Imagine getting served tea by the mech from Avatar thats kind wierd no….

    • Xaverian27

You get this little guy by prepurchasing as well as a few extra stuffs if you look at Arenanet’s GW2 site. This is probably a sneak peek of what is going to be in the Cash Shop. Fun little things like this that is not a huge gamechanger.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/ADEN6X6TYCORSSGEHKWMBIHDHY Eclipse

I believe they only last for 5 days as well.

They aren’t permanent, even for the DDE and CE additions.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tim-Becker/1470011374 Tim Becker

I have seen footage (it’s german tho) where the player gets one of those by playing trough the personal story. Don’t know if thats a beta thing or if this will still be in game by release.

  • fallos24

I can’t wait to see more of the Asura and Sylvari, woot!

    • JJGlyph

If we can play Asura in the first BWE I am going to have a gamergasm.

  • Cyclops07

Nice butler, pretty much run of the mill mmo multi purpose companion

  • DoctorOverlord

Thanks for posting this vid Scott!   It’s nice to see the functionality that the golem provides and I like how ArenaNet adds such character and attention to the design.

I laughed at the end but then I thought it’s rather evil to destroy that cuddly golem after it’s served its purpose.   But then this is asura tech here :)
