Let’s take a tour of the Guild Wars 2 Asura home city…Rata Sum.

Guild Wars 2 - Asura Rata Sum City Tour

  • Brimstar

This city was extremely impressive, in terms of scale and design.

  • Nicolás Zuasti

I missed only 2 vistas in the city, its my favorite city so far. But i’ll grant that you can get lost very fast in it.

So glad the game is coming out soon a lot of the city in the beta I wanted to do but I always had some friend on at any moment I was on so was always doing stuff with them.  Looks great can’t wait tell I can fully explore everything out with my Asura engineer I am making for my main.

  • QSatu

It looks complicated at first but it’s not, and it’s one of the most compact ones so I bet it will be popular with crafters =]

    • Old Ben

Now that you can access your bank directly from crafting stations, you rarely need to walk much. Unfortunately, there is no “deposit all collectibles” or “retrieve all collectibles” option in the crafting station interface.

    • ArsenicSundae

Yeah, there’s a type of crafting commons on the second floor with banks and trading post located right in the center.  It’s definitely the most convenient city for crafting, unlike Divinity’s Reach, where the crafting stations are located around a huge loop and the banks and trading post are on an entirely different level.

  • Old Ben

BTW, “rata sum” means “I am certain” (or “I am sure”, “I am certified”, etc.) in Latin.

It’s also an anagram for Marasut. OOOOooooOOOoooo

(For those who didn’t play GW1, marasut were evil angelic beings that seemed to be destroyed for good… but were not)

      • Old Ben

And, perhaps as a reference to what happens if you miss one of the jumps on the outer wall, it’s also an anagram for “traumas”.

        • ArsenicSundae

Or you aren’t paying attention to where you’re going inside.  Most ledges have force field barriers around them to prevent falling, but not all.  Rata Sum may as well means “death trap” for the inattentive.

          • Old Ben

The game needs some “slow fall” spells. Jumping off the top of a huge mountain or building loses some of its appeal when you break every polygon in your body.

Speaking of which, gravity still felt “wrong” in BWE3. Jumps just don’t have the same elegance as in WoW or Team Fortress. Partly it’s the animations, but gravity itself feels weird in Tyria. Things seem to accelerate too quickly and then fall at a constant speed, there’s no suspension time.

          • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Tyria gravity seems to be high.  When you walk off a ledge, you do seem to drop very quickly. Almost gives a teleporter fell to missing a jump.

With the Asura animations I get more of a feel of a “near miss” when I make the jump, than when I fall.

Did you mean the Mursaat? At the very least EotN hints at how they could have survived.

Mursaat’s being evil is debatable. Sure trapping people’s soul to use as battery is not very nice but it protected the rest of the world from the Titans.

      • SanekB

That would be mursaat, not marasut.

      • Jado Cast

Wooden Potatoes talks about this as well.  It is speculated that Rata Sum was actually the hidden city of the Mursaat but was abandoned when the Titans attacked.

  • dawolv

These “mysterious” doors you didn’t want to turn the UI back on for are PRISON CELLS :D
You didn’t pan down to see the captives, but theres prisoners. and the NPC around are called “Prisoners”

  • St_Draco

MikeB, you missed all the external labs and the docks.  You reach them through the gates.  So Rata Sum is even bigger than you realize.

Where can I find the OTHER city tours that was already done that he mentioned?

    • iamthemikeb

      uploooadddinnnnggggggggggg soon

      • Jado Cast

        “one moment please”  Processing . . .. Processing . . . Processing . . .

    • Old Ben

You can find the old ones here or in MikeB’s channel on YouTube (akamikeb) and I suspect he’ll post one for The Grove soon enough (maybe include links to the older tours in the article body?).

  • JJGlyph

Best race, best city. Can’t wait to see what it looks like with high-res textures & some more optimization.

I am pretty sure its pronounced Rata-Sue-M lol. And I hope the Mursaat make an appearance in GW2 I liked them and the White Mantle.

  • Laborday

Mike, your Guild Wars videos are simply the best on the internet.

Does anyone know how to get ink off an LCD screen?

      • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

hmm, couldn’t find a homemade recipe for a anti-static cleaning fluid.

      • Jado Cast

        just use white out.

you actually missed a lot more areas. there are portals that take you outside the cubed city limits to other areas like the docks/home instance/zojja’s lab and I believe one other area.

Got more of a social hub feel from Rata Sum.  Not sure which city I will spend most of my time in, but Rata Sum will keep my interest for awhile.

    • Jado Cast

My bet would be LA for most people, and DR as a close 2nd.

  • Jado Cast

On Earth items fall to earth
9.81 m/s (ignoring air resistance.  Maybe Tyria is faster lol

  • RockerDC3

    This was too rushed. Incomplete.
