Guild Wars 2 Warrior Is Highlighted In A PvP Build Special

PvP is a big part of ArenaNet‘s Guild Wars 2 — as anyone who was lost in it for hours this past weekend will attest to.

To assist you in making sense of the many options at your eager fingertips, Ed “Taugrim” Park has created this rather superb look at the warrior profession.

Ed explains the trait tree options and just how your choices can improve your effectiveness while unloading with your rifle. Then we get so see those options in action, as he explains tactics and responses in his own inimitable fashion.

With the sPvP tournaments entering the game, that extra edge can make all the difference, which is something Taugrim is an expert at providing.

Can Ed make you a warrior fanatic?

I’ve been holding off on playing warrior since I think it’s probably what I’ll focus on come Live.  Another great informational video, Taugrim!

Based on Ed’s videos I’m adding a range warrior to my list of Characters.

    Norn Warrior
    Charr Elementalist
    Asura Guardian
    Human Engineer
    Sylvari Necromancer

    Nice video!

  • falknerblitz

Warrior is OP……ya. No I kid but it seems like you were putting out way too much damage – I mean that volley would have 1 shot me seeing as you were doing 10-15K damage and I only had 12-13K health……so that’s definitely something that needs to be tweaked. No attack – especially a ranged one – should do that sort of damage.

    • http://www.kaiketsu.enjin.com/ Corey Jenkins

heh warriors are a little strong right now, but I think their manageable with the right set up depending on what class you play, but 12-13k health is actually kind of low in a SPVP environment to be honest. If you’re purposely building a glass cannon build then it makes more a little more sense. You should be able to do really good dmg but ya you’ll  be just that, a glass cannon. If not then you might think about getting more vitality runes or traits to raise you’re hp a little bit higher.

      • falknerblitz

I wish I was a glass cannon that did tons of damage. I would be ok with that. I was actually a support Guardian. The nerf to stats they got during this beta weekend cut the Guardian’s HP…ALOT. My base HP was only 10K. After traiting max in Vitality (I wanted the traits and healing too) my HP went up to 13K. And that’s where it stayed. I could have taken an amulet to boost my HP another 5K or so but then I wouldn’t have healing or defense from the amulet I did take….meaning the build would be useless. Ya so they need to bump them back up so that they are as squishy. I mean I’m trying to play a defensive character….I kind of need the health cuz I have Zero DPS….

Guardians do not rely on health pools to survive, they rely on health/boon management and control abilities.

Warriors eventually run out of HP faster than they can heal back up and eventually tire out if they do not have enough downtime between fights, while guardians can neutralize a point like nobody’s business.

think of it like a Fighting game, a successful block is just as good as a successful attack.

          • falknerblitz

I agree for the most part however that doesn’t help when you don’t get the chance and get 1shot from range. I feel that the nerf to Guardians for BWE2 was too much and they need to be buffed up a bit more for BWE3 (10k base HP is too low. This should be about 13-14K IMO).

  • SuperUncle

Since last BWE the damage you see at the end of a channelled ability is the total damage. You don’t have to ad the ticks to each other, and 5k (with the crit spec) is already good enough for a ranged auto target ability :-)
However, I think taugrim has played a little bit too much Venguard in SWTOR ^^. 2 majors points here: first, in guild wars, warrior =/ tank and as there s not that much lazer thingie going around, being ranged and being able to dodge is already good enough (maybe with 1 defensive utility at least), and from what I v seen from Taugrim’s footage, the damage output is a bit too low. Thus, other runes might do, like Divinity (+60 all and 18% crit dmg).
Second, and it may cancel the first point, Taugrim should use his burst skill. The 9% crit is good, but not nearly as good as a good eviscerate or other burst in the face :-) .

Thought this would be melee. Been waiting so long for GW2 to role a 2H warrior, but… I don’t like arena pvp and melee is 10% of WvW. Unfortunately I pre-purchased. Probably shouldn’t have.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Evan-Iwerks/712235 Evan Iwerks

Actually, siege weapons really do become critically important for taking keeps in most circumstances – those rushes of people into gates are either at towers, or to cover a siege ram. Without the ram, they’re easy to thwart with siege weapons of your own, and siege rams are quite susceptible to melee. It’s dangerous, but can save a gate if interrupted properly.

But when it comes to keeps, Trebuchets placed miles away are king. Any kind of cover can keep them safe at that point, from melee to ranged infantry.

The only real problem with melee is the absence of diminishing returns in GW2. Melee needs to pick its battles very carefully, or they risk being overrun by multiple enemies and chain-locked to death. A lot of defensive and stun-breaking utilities are critical for success in WvW melee. That said, they are fairly common, and are absolutely devastating to most ranged fighters if they can engage properly.

So yeah, siege weapons definitely matter – they’ll matter even more once people have played for longer, and the matchups themselves are longer than 24hours. Melee is hard, but very rewarding when performed correctly. I regularly swapped between rifle, longbow, and greatsword on my warrior this past BWE (with sword+warhorn always on my secondary set – that mobility is amazingly strong).

      • Gregg Whitman

First beta I just ran around with lots of HP as basically a support medic because everyone was ranged and there was no way to get anything done as melee. That, is not the game I thought I was signing up for. TBH,it might be better to get rid of NPC’s and Keep Leaders all together. If people actually have to defend stuff, melee can go cap other keeps while the ranged duke it out on the front lines. Steal Planetside 2′s mechanic of you don’t own a keep till it’s been held for a certain amount of time because the 15 minute door busting ain’t fun. For me anyway, it’s just incredibly boring. Maybe not others but I prefer to do something rather and stand around playing medic.

Nice build! I ran a similar one the exception that I focused on the adrenaline ability called Kill Shot. I noticed in the video that you don’t seem to use it almost at all. Is there a particular reason for avoiding it?

  • JJGlyph

Was surprised by how informative that was. More!!!

  • Justin Bania

Oh Ed, why do your videos always make me want to PvP after watching them?  Curse my lack of GW2 access at present!

At least you have plenty of company …

    I concur more of this

      What ^ said

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/RFNMWWX5NHF3V6KFTWQ3UGJULA Larry

Frenzy was actually changed during that BWE, no crit damage buff.

And to say, your build was very similar to mine. I had the rifle, sword but shield instead. And instead of stomp, I had balanced stance. Played similarly to you, but more options up close.

And honestly, the synergy between leg specialist and all those roots is just great.

  • Krzysztof Kotarba

this is great :D range warrior

  • Old Ben

Heh. Another human with the “Clint Eastwood” face. I think half the players are using that one. Can’t blame them, really, it’s the only one that doesn’t look like a teen.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_R35J5EUERGS3E6JRIQMBCDTRRY Nathan I

there’s also a david beckham face and a gerard butler face.

      • Old Ben

The David Beckham face is the Clint Eastwood face (just different facial hair). Can’t say I’ve met Gerard, unless he was 18 at the time.

One added problem of the childish faces is that if you give them a proper beard it tends to look fake.

ed are you constantly sucking on a mint or something? or eating lunch?  its sort of distracting, as listening to someone eat/suck on candy is huge pet peeve of mine.  nevertheless, great stuff.  no more mints though!

also yes, more Ed on guildcast.  That show reallllllly needs his level-headedness

  • P V

Very nice. What did you take on defense ?

  • SiderFace

I like this guy.  Good explanations and he talks in a way that is immediately understandable and relatable by gamers.

    He’s quite linguistically inclined.

[Apparently 'relatable' and 'gamers' are not words in this spell check, lol]

Amazing vid once again Ed.  Can’t wait to see one on the guardian

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/cpjontek?feature=mhee cpjontek

Great build and instructions on using it.  I loved your SWTOR vids during beta (although I didn’t play that game long.)  Would love to see more of these with different specs and professions Ed!

  • vugdish

in my opinion this build is better but it may depend on user and style that u like :)
