I remember the days when Conan traveled the land, wooing damsels with his rough, Austrian accent and cutting down Thulsa Doom with his mighty sword. I also remember when Lionsgate tried to reboot the franchise with Khal Drogo (Jason Mamoa) and failed spectacularly to do so. Now, Universal Studios is bringing Arnold Schwarzenegger back into the role, and that may have big implications for Funcom‘s Age of Conan.
The former Governor of California will again take up the mantle of the fabled Cimmerian barbarian, for the first time in over 30 years. Apparently, the latest Conan movie will focus on an older barbarian that has already ascended to the Aquilonian throne. Age of Conan executive producer Craig Morrison claims that Funcom enjoys a strong relationship with license distributor Paradox, so a tie-in with the movie is entirely possible.
In 2011, Funcom released the Savage Coast of Turan adventure pack for Age of Conan, which brought new areas to the game that were seen in the attempted film reboot. Whether the MMO will reflect any of the events that occur in the new movie is not yet set in stone. Conan will not deign to make an appearance on the silver screen until 2014, giving Funcom plenty of time to work out a deal with Universal Studios, Paradox, and, hopefully, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
