Effective immediately Scott Hartsman has taken over as the CEO for Trion Worlds.
In a surprise move this morning Trion Worlds announced Scott Hartsman is taking over as CEO. There are many reasons which make this choice an interesting one. One of the big things to think about is how shortly after leaving RIFT last January Hartsman made his feelings about AAA MMOs and their perspective future crystal clear. His point overall was the way MMOs are developed needs to change and so does the way companies look to gain money for their games. Hartsman didn’t say subscriptions are a thing of a past, but subscriptions as we have known them probably are.
Weigh all of this with a statement he made in an e-mail to the company:
“We’re going to rapidly be laying the groundwork for a new strategy for Trion — One that’s closer to the foundation of how we’ve had our wins so far, and then extending that base into the enduring success this company can, and will, be.”
A new strategy for Trion sounds interesting though I am not really sure what it means exactly. One thing they can probably count as a success is the conversion of RIFT to a f2p model. There are certainly more people playing it now than there was previously and Trion definitely has not suffered from outrage and backlash from their new f2p model the way some other companies did when they made the switch. Maybe we’ll see future games released as f2p with an optional sub in the future? I have to admit as someone who is looking forward to End of Nations I am hopeful it will be f2p and maybe have an optional sub.
Most likely we won’t see any big changes at Trion for a little bit. No matter how quickly he goes about changing what he wants to change generally it takes some time for it to trickle out to the public eye. What changes do you think Hartsman is referring to?
