Guild Wars 2 Secrets in the Swamp Event: Shadow Behemoth Boss

There is no shortage of amazing world events for players in Guild Wars 2.

While questing outside of Divinity’s Reach I managed to stumble across the Godslost Swamp. Running through there, I couldn’t help shake the feeling that something ominous was laying dormant in the area. But that could have just been the quest notification that I was reading.

Fast forward a few hours later and imagine my surprise when I return to the swamp and see a massive Shadow Behemoth as the final chain in the Secrets in the Swamp meta event. This larger than life fight was first showcased in the demo at Gamescom, and thrusts players into an epic large scale battle at just level 15!

Guild Wars 2 Secrets in the Swamp Event: Shadow Behemoth Boss

    Nice video and coverage!

(lol, I can hear us derping in Skype)

    • 7BitBrian

Heh, that is pretty awesome. I didn’t even pay attention to the fact that he was recording this while we were doing it. Had I known I’d have probably shut up a bit more.

Dam thats one awesome scary looking swamp monster.

    • Old Ben

He’s significantly scarier if you happen to be playing late at night, with no other players around, and you practically walk into his mouth without noticing because you’re just enjoying the view of the swamp and wondering why your FoV suddenly got so much better.

      It happened to… er… someone I know.

I’m pissed that I missed this because this was my first BWE and I wasn’t at a high enough level to make it to that while it was happening.

    • ArsenicSundae

I’ve played the hell out of all three betas and I still haven’t been able to catch this event.  Come launch, I think I’ll just set up camp in that swamp and wait.

      • http://twitter.com/DaPhoolz Rp TheFoolz

same here. i’ve been trying to do the events in the area just trying to get to this but no luck. :/ maybe i did something wrong.

        • Old Ben

If you see green gates in the swamp, destroy them. If you run out of gates and the boss doesn’t spawn, check the surrounding areas (Eldvin Monastery, Phinney Ridge and Taminn Foothills) for similar gates.

If there are no gates but the boss still isn’t spawning, he’s probably busy (ex., at home, watching Ancient Aliens).

I’m thinking I’ll be doing the same. It’s a low level encounter so hopefully it happens more frequently

Nice video shaffnit. Glad you’re enjoying the game. That encounter was awesome btw, one of my favorites so far. Are we going to see any dungeon footage?

    • 7BitBrian

We did run a dungeon as all DPS specced, no control, heals, tank, support, etc. I take it he has to go through it and make a workable video out of it though. Give him time.

Awesome video (would like to see more of these come launch they will really help out with what to do with each boss.)

  • Old Ben

What this video doesn’t show is the chain of events leading up to this. They take place in multiple er… places (the swamp itself, Eldvin Monastery, Phinney Ridge and Taminn Foothills) and consist basically of killing shadow demons and closing portals (probably to “train” players in what they must do during the actual encounter). Once enough portals have been closed, the Shadow Behemoth spawns in the swamp.

BTW, in BWE2 several NPCs at the monastery (possibly also at other locations) were bugged, and just stood there, completely ignoring the portals and the monsters. Only one or two guards seemed to notice them (and got slaughtered in seconds). Did anyone notice if that was fixed in BWE3?

the only problem with this boss is the animation
it is cut several times and bothers me a bit, just saw this happen with this boss

    • Old Ben

Yes, looks like a bit of the animation is missing when it rears back before screaming. I don’t remember it doing that in BWE2, seems to be a bug introduced in BWE3.

I liked the Sylvari one pretty much.
The whole event chain leading up to the giant Worm was nicely done… the worm itself was a little bit unspecatcular though.. it was actually just a reskin of the Norn lvl1 boss. But regardless… the whole feel of wandering through that area and having the OPTION (it is totally optional) to do this event and rid that swamp of its evil is pretty damn awesome. you go from “minding your own business” to “omg i gotta stop this from happening” together with XY other people

    • Old Ben

      >  it was actually just a reskin of the Norn lvl1 boss

Yeah, just a reskin… on a different model, with different animation, summoning different adds, casting different spells and making different sounds.

You know, one of those “reskins” where everything is different. ;-)

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000961774932 Norman Heid

        yah one of those ;)

edit: what i meant was more like… “another big worm with a big swipe that knocks you back? wow… dark instead of light blue… meh.. but ok.. still pretty cool”

        • Old Ben

The jungle one shoots projectiles, creates poison clouds and eats adds to recover health. The model itself is also quite different (different segments, spikes along the body, different head).

Yes, they can both spin (in slightly different ways), but isn’t that a “logical” attack for a giant worm? That’s a bit like complaining that wolves and coyotes both use their mouths to bite.

        • Razor4884

Keep in mind, they are both wurms. They may be different sub-species, but they are the same species all the same. If they didn’t look remotely similar, I would begin to question their family tree.

  • Brimstar

Fantastic video, loved this encounter for the humans starting area but the shaman summoning the ice elemental was epic as well (in the norn area)

    • Old Ben

Scaling was a bit crazy on the shaman, though. Sometimes he would just fill the floor with those storms that slow you down and do damage over time, and even if you had 4 dodges you wouldn’t be able to get out. They really need to add some checks to make sure the AoEs don’t overlap like that.

Oh, and he was hitting for 3500 or so (with 3 players present), which might be a _little_ bit too much considering players at that level have around 600 HP. ;-)

I really liked this encounter, I missed it for the first 2 beta events. Luckily I was able to do it on the 3rd bwe
