Cliffhanger Productions Launches Kickstarter For Shadowrun Online

A few months ago, we did a story on the Shadowrun Returns Kickstarter and at the time someone mentioned that this might be a lead-in to a Shadowrun MMO project. Well, it seems like they were right… somewhat.

As it turns out, the people at Harebrained Schemes are not running this project. Instead it’s being headed up by a group from Vienna, Austria named Cliffhanger Productions.

The project — which still has 20 days left — has a funding goal of $500,000. This is the minimum for an MMO that the developers intend to release on PC, Mac, iOS and Android tablet. Currently it’s sitting at a little over $100,000.

Once launched the game will use a buy to play format similar to that of Guild Wars 2. Players will have to pay for future expansions.

One of the more interesting features of the game is that the players are to have a lasting effect on the universe. Any changes that result in the MMO will be carried over into the pen and paper version. The team even promises to produce a book for Shadowrun 4th edition.

It will be interesting to see how all of this works out. Shadowrun fans are known for being pretty particular when it comes to video games based off the IP.

So I guess the question is… How excited for this game are the Shadowrun fans in our community?

it was kinda funny, but I actually already saw a little information regarding Shadowrun Online when the Shadowrun Returns kickstarter was just underway (there was a link to it on their website).  There weren’t many details there at the time, but I was interested to see what would surface…a few months later, here we are as it suddenly pops onto Kickstarter. And I backed it (not like the money matters until it ends).

The video you were playing in the background also details how they plan for there to be several stages to gameplay, most notably how once you picked up a job/quest aka “Run”, you can spend time doing some preparation like talking/bribing contacts to get pieces of information that will potentially help you have a smooth Run (essentially, they may reveal alternative routes to the same goal).  It sounds like it could be interesting, but we’ll have to see it executed to really get an idea of how big an impact it can have (and whether it adds to the fun of the game).

It also sounds like they’ll be doing fairly frequent updates regarding the various designs of the game (obviously largely to gain backer confidence and therefore more funds to the kickstarter), so will be looking forward to that stuff as it comes along.

In the mean time, I’ve already got too many other things to play: Mechwarrior Online, Mechwarrior Tactics (hopefully soon, hopefully good), GW2, Orcs Must Die 2, sprinkle a little LoL and Dayz in there, hopefully The War Z beta….and somehow squeeze in my job and other life stuff in there…lol.

Can you start a Kickstarter gain x amount of dollars and then take the money and run?

No they are legaly bound.. The kickstarter people.. All money gained has to go to the project..

        yea it kinda can happen..
“Who is responsible for fulfilling the promises of a project? Kickstarter does not investigate a creator’s ability to complete their project. The claims and responsibilities of this project are solely its creators.”
        copypaste from the kickstarter faq.

Just wanted to point out that this is not the complete truth, there will be two formats available: the Guild Wars model mentioned above where you pay the initial cost and then play for free from then on AND also on a separate server there will be available a Free To Play version w/ shopping mall.

Just a little update on this. It came right down to the wire on this one! It was something crazy like they had to come up with about half of their goal in a matter of a few days and by some miracle they pulled it off in the 11th hour. So it got financed and actually went past their goal by around $50k… Yes, I am a backer.
