CCP Announces on blog EVE Online Ship Overhauls

Last March CCP had stated they were changing the way ships would function in EVE Online by removing Tiers, adding specific roles for ships, and reworking/ adding new skills for players to utilize.

Today CCP announced these new changes in their latest blog. The MMO company also dropped in a few glimpses of what to expect come this Summer/Winter and something to look forward to next year.

To start this all off while I can still breathe after reading these changes, mining frigates have been given combat roles.

Players can also expect to find an entry level vessel for Mining Barges and defined roles for each barge. A massive listing of the new roles for each ship in the Frigate category with details on how each ship will work and how their EHP/Storage will compare to other ships.

On top of this news, CCP mentioned Destroyers will be next on the revamp with Cruisers/Battlecruisers following next.

We can expect these changes to hit sometime before the Winter expansion with the Destroyer revamp around Summer and Cruisers/Battlecruisers sometime next year.

With the complete overhaul to the way ships work and CCP’s new motto: “if you could fly it before, you can fly it now”, does the hardcore EVE Online fan want these changes and are these changes for the better?

Let us know in the comments below.

while I never did shoot rocks overmuch, I really like what they’re doing with the mining vessels. CCP is making some really good choices after the turnaround. To get the full scope of the changes, you need to read the other linked dev blogs. And the mining frigates get combat roles and will be replaced with a new ORE frig, but the ORE mining ships will only get rebalanced, not given combat roles.

Oh geesh. I really should listen to the whole hit before commenting. CCP is making changes that have been requested and suggested by the community forever. Some of them streamline skill progression, but in no way is it any less complex. The reason subs are going up is because they are once again focusing on Flying in Space (FiS) instead of all of the other stuff that had players pissed off for 2 years.

CCP has, and always will use a council made up of community members that are voted on by the entire community; pretty much a city council. Almost everything CCP wants to change/add is passed by them for comments and concerns. Nothing is put into EVE “just because,” like so many other MMO franchises.

Honestly after reading these changes it stirred a desire to resub this winter. I enjoyed the game but always felt that each ship was a stepping stone and never worth the staying power.

Oh nos! what does this mean for future Hulkageddons?

Good question actually. If memory is right, wasn’t there a yearly event with Hulks?

I heard a few friends talk about that event. Hopefully it still stays.

Interesting. We used to joke about our “Battle Barges,” mining barges that we loaded up with stasis webifiers and combat drones to help trap and fight pirates around asteroid belts. But what will newbie pirates do now, without jetcans to tip?

I am looking forward to these changes :)

Sounds like a good addition.  Looks as if the tech 1 frigs are becoming slightly more useful than just for being a scout for the rest of the fleet.  This will make newer players feel more needed as they will be able to perform additional roles.
