The Planetside 2 Beta Is Pushed Back And SOE Files A New Trademark

For those of you who are waiting patiently to get into the Planetside 2 beta, you may have to wait a few extra days. According to John Smedley‘s most recent tweets, the beta may now start this upcoming Friday or Monday rather than yesterday or today as they had hoped.

While Smedley doesn’t offer any details as to what’s causing the pushback, he did say: “we have some stuff we need to make sure is awesome” and that the team is working like crazy to polish it before they let a whole bunch of people get their hands on it.

In related news SOE filed a new trademark titled Reign of Fear last week. According to the filing it is for “Computer game software and video game software; providing downloadable multiplayer, role playing, real time computer and video game software via an online website for entertainment purposes” and “Entertainment services, namely, operating a multiplayer, role playing, real time game for others via the Internet and local area computer networks.”

Nothing beyond the filing is known about the trademark.  Someone has registered the domain reignoffear.com, but at present it looks like it might be someone who thought to grab it in order to sell it to SOE for a nice profit later.

Let us know what you think. Are you upset by the small pushback of the PS2 beta? And what do you think Reign of Fear might be?

    P2W game.PS1 was way better.

    • HarmonBlues

If they deliver on their promises, PS2 will be less P2W than most F2P games.

      Acronyms.

Reality that I’m convincing myself of is that the last minute polish is just on the technical side perhaps even server side of preparing for such a barrage of players.

Conspiracy theory is that SOE knows they cannot afford another failure and so this game is being combed over by video game pros who can bug test like they are a cannister of raid…And they found something gamebreaking technical failure and that caused the delay.

If the conspiracy (I told him to say it) is true then we will continue to hear about releasw date puahbacks and increasing technical issues during beta.

    For the record

Pushing back a beta for more polish??
I thought beta was supposed to help do that kind of stuff X.x

Once upon a time betas were used for testing and the people who signed up realized they were agreeing to playtest an unfinished game.

Nowadays unfortunately betas have to be as much marketing hype because too many people think beta = free trial.   If the beta doesn’t play well or there are bugs these people start breaking their NDAs screaming and whining about how terrible the game is.    That starts to generate bad hype as more idiots listen to these people as if they know what they’re talking about.

Companies have adapted by restricting their real beta testing to select people who can be trusted to keep to NDAs.  They also make certain they only release polished ‘betas’ when they offer open enrollment into testing.

the closed Beta we will begetting into is misnamed it should be called the preview Can game dam well STOP calling there’s things a Beta heck they said they want to polish the game before we get into the Beta, why do Betas need to be polished :(

What on earth do the Polish have to do with this?

    • http://www.facebook.com/bothand.nether Bothand Nether

Game Needs more room for them.

  • Noxdus

There are probably a few iterations to finish putting in. A week delay for that is pretty acceptable. They were probably just slightly over-zealous with their beta date.

I hate how betas are now considered “demos”. Very annoying.

BTW does this game have any PvE content or is it pure PvP?

    • Revanhavoc

      Pure PvP baby.

      • http://twitter.com/MrSunrock Sunrock

Thanks for the reply. That is what I hoped for. PvE elements in this game would not be cool. And as there are no PvE elements in this game a cash shop might not be as bad as it is in PvE games as some one that plays the game allot will always have a perk over some one that does not because you cant buy skill no matter how mush money you have.

Its called technical testing at this stage and no, it has no PvE content as in no AI controlled mobs or Vehicles from what I have seen or heard of. Hope to see you all in there when the beta hits, it is awesome.

A technical test is essentially an external alpha. The goal of the test appears to be to ensure that fundamental aspects of the software function correctly. Once that’s assured, they can move into the closed beta phase in the knowledge that they can focus on features rather than stability.

At least, that’s my understanding. I could be wrong.

    • http://twitter.com/MrSunrock Sunrock

Well that is the difference between alpha and beta testing. Alpha is more stability and beta is more game play changes even though stability is an ongoing thing even after the release.
