Totalbiscuit Delves Into Guild Wars 2 Thief Gameplay

There’s a whole lot of Guild Wars 2 information blowing up on the ‘net today.

Noted v-blogger Totalbiscuit had a go at the Guild Wars 2 beta over the weekend, giving us a great look at weapon variety on his Charr Thief in a half-hour-long video.

Throughout the video, he makes use of improvised weapons, or “bundles,” which replace a character’s weapon skills with a few new ones. While limited in use and not typically as effective as a “real” weapon, they can be cleverly used to good effect, such as when he smacks an enemy Charr with a board, sending him flying.

It should also be noted that, with a typical weapon setup, such as a sword or dagger and pistol, some skills are altered to make use of both, such as a skill that fires a pistol and then allows for a quick shadow-stepping strike with a dagger. Other skills actually change your weapon loadout as part of their effect, and — while team-tackling a dynamic event — an Elementalist bestows a hammer of lightning on his Thief, making available another whole set of skills.

In short, if your friends say GW2 combat will be “dull” because you only have 10 skills, you should suggest they watch this video — and not just for the swell accent.

Ever since I started paying attention to GW2, I thought the system was that your main-hand weapon gave you skills 1-3 and your off-hand weapon gave you skills 4 and 5, with Thief being the exception with their 3 skill dependent on the combo of weapons they were wielding.

Has the Thief system been exported to all classes now?  That’s how this piece comes across to me.

Your absolutly right Tom, only the Thief class has this ability that number 3 skill changes depending on what you have on your main head and off hand, all other classes, 1-3 depend on main hand, 4-5 depend on off hand.

Seconded. This mechanic is exclusive to the Thief. Each profession has something that makes it’s playstyle more interesting. This + the steal ability is what gives the Thief a bit of uniqueness.

+ the initiative system instead of cooldowns

Thanks for the clarification, guys, I was not aware it was a thief-only thing. Even so, knowing it for just that class is cool beans :)

On the other hand, I doubt we’d be heartbroken to see it expanded to other classes. :P

I watched the entire 30 minute video without even checking the time.  If I’m this addicted to news on the game, I hate to see what happens when I get to play it.

I think I need to start saving up for flowers for my lady friend to make up for my inevitable disappearance during beta weekends.

Yep, I have the same feeling.  ”You have been playing for four hours, please take a break” is going to appear a lot in chat I think.
