En Masse Unveils Upcoming TERA Free to Play Features

En Masse Entertainment has announced that in February its MMORPG TERA is going free to play in an update that they are calling TERA: Rising.  This announcement comes a couple of weeks after it was announced that subscription fees would be optional in Japan and Korea.

The TERA: Rising update will not only make TERA free to play, but will also be unleashing new content as well.  This update will bring the new Crucible of Flame PvE dungeon that allows players to choose the difficulty of the instance, and a new PvP battleground, Champion Skyring, a 3v3 team encounter.  More details should be available on the upcoming content in the near future.

The big question when any title goes F2P is what content will be available to free players, and what will be locked behind a pay wall.  According to today’s announcement, all current content including all dungeons, battlegrounds, and character levels will be available to everyone when TERA goes free to play.  No content will require payment, and players can participate in whatever they like as much as they like.  So let’s take a look at what perks both new and existing players will have.  There are three tiers in the new F2P system.

New Players

  • Brand new players will have two character slots with more available in the shop.

Past Players

  • Founder’s title: new “Founder” title, marking your status as one of TERA’s first
  • Founder’s rights: eight character slots, four bank tabs, and more items simultaneously on the brokerage
  • Terminus mount: a founder-exclusive mount to commemorate your victory in the Argon War
  • Free En Masse Points: deposits $5 (standard) or $10 (collector’s edition) worth of EMPs to your e-wallet

If you’re a former TERA player, your account has also been reactivated from now until January 16th so you can jump back in and get into the swing of things in anticipation of the February F2P update.

Current Players

  • Founder’s title: new “Founder” title, marking your status as one of TERA’s first
  • Founder’s rights: eight character slots, four bank tabs, and more items simultaneously on the brokerage
  • Terminus mount: a founder-exclusive mount to commemorate your victory in the Argon War
  • Free En Masse Points: deposits $5 (standard) or $10 (collector’s edition) worth of EMPs to your e-wallet

If your current subscription time extends beyond the F2P launch date, any remaining time will round up to 30 days of upcoming Elite Status, a bundle of benefits designed to provide prestige and convenience to subscribers.

folks knew this was coming since Tera launched. It was only ever a matter of time

    • Joel Viola

Damm, you sure are smart. And  your comment adds so much to the conversation…

      • Ravenstorm

As to yours is a jewel of intellect? At least Lee Joel adds something to the conversation, as opposed to you troll bitching.

This will be like SWOTOR all over again

i dont think so, you dont need to buy action bars to play… ahahah

      • http://www.facebook.com/kirzansix Mike Coulombe

Word. That alone will keep it worst forever. :D

Actually, as much as I hate Tera, this is probably one of the best F2P conversions I have seen. As long as they continue to give updates for the game free without having paid content patches labeled as “expansions (cough) I think it will do pretty well. I am sure they had so little subs that going completely F2P with all content available that relying on cosmetic / boosters for income ends up being more.

The SWTOR F2P model essentially is an extended free trial that forces you to pay if you want to enjoy the game beyond the class story.

Same for EU Next month F2P

    • Sulac0

      Cheers for EU info.

I knew this would happen to the game, but honestly I’m glad it did. Even more so that they do not have a horrid F2P model, at least for the current content, unlike a certain game with laser swords…

I’m actually quite excited to play the game again now.

    SHARUKOOOOOOO!

    • http://www.facebook.com/jonathan.hornsby.7 Jonathan Hornsby

Sharuko can’t come and reply right now; he’s busy obsessively looking for Guild Wars 2 content to troll in order to take his mind off this utterly predictable situation.

      • Johan Lohan

You sir have just won over 9000 internet point for that comment :)

      • Spammerbam

He’s also probably typing a wall of text to defend this article.

        Wait for it…

  • Joel Viola

Played Tera on a beta weekend. Kinda liked it but not that much to pay and sub…will give it a try now, maybe I got hooked. How long till the f2p comes to Europe?

  • http://www.facebook.com/kirzansix Mike Coulombe

If only the client wasn’t 25GB… and the patch servers weren’t the slowest… I’d probably give it a go again seeing how they’re covering founders in gold.

Note to other devs: If your game weighs more than 20GB, make a streaming client.

Not really surprised. They’re probably making a ton of money off the appearance clothing, weapons and mounts already. The sub just stops those casual purchases from happening in the first place.

Saw it comming, still won’t play it tho no point in wasting my time :S.

    • http://twitter.com/Dstnd4Gr3atness Ralph Clotaire

      Why did you post then?

  • http://www.facebook.com/mooncastyre Melissa Waldrup-Old

Not surprised.  I tried out the game during beta and was not impressed.  I got through the prologue quest and goofed around a bit, spending a grand total of 2 hours in the game before the controls and UI drove me so insane, I’ve never been able to force myself to pick it up again.  The questing was alright, but not particularly engaging.  The real-action combat, which is supposed to be a major feature, didn’t feel as revolutionary as advertised.  The only thing the game had going for it was the eye-candy.  The graphics were vivid and beautiful.  However, I’ve had more fun playing Aion than I ever did TERA.  Better questing, the flight is a lot of fun, and I prefer the tasteful sexiness of Aion to the overt sexuality of TERA.

I’ve got to partly agree with that sexiness comment.  Although the game is beautiful and I love the Elin and Popori races, when your plate armor begins to jiggle around the lady parts you can start to ask a few questions.

if lvl cap was 30-40……with quality raid/instances……..i’d be playing already

I just started the free trial of tera a week ago and i think it’s fantastic. I wouldn’t want to pay for it because my credit cards are all maxed, but i am definitely going to play the heck out of it when it’s free. Think I can find a girlfriend on there? o_O

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ian-Smith/100000531128393 Ian Smith

       ……………….

    • http://TheInnerGeekZone.com/ Troy Blackburn

The question isn’t IF, but HOW MANY girlfriends you can find there.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jimmy-Nguyen/704808054 Jimmy Nguyen

Gonna be hard if you can’t buy your girlfriends anything with your max cards bro. Reality hurts.

  • Spammerbam

    Sharuko.

No hate, buddy. We all knew this was going to happen; this is actually quite healthy for the game.

  • http://twitter.com/davidthegreater davidthegreater

This doesn’t surprise me at all, the sub + regularly expanding cash shop model just isn’t tenable if you want to keep any but the hardest core of your playerbase. Sub, or cash shop, but not both, and that’s exactly the reason I let my sub lapse. I’ll definitely give it a shot again though, as it was an enjoyable game. Just not enjoyable enough to justify paying for it 3 times.

  • Azuri

I know I’ll get a lot of hate for this but I actually like Tera more then GW2 very happy it’s f2p.

    • http://www.facebook.com/jonathan.hornsby.7 Jonathan Hornsby

To each his own; don’t let the trolls bother you.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/C4VMQFZDUE2RCW5C77YBJ24WIU jade

I agree the combat system is great, no tab target I can’t miss you.
I also like someone else played for about 2 hours on a free trial near a year again.
Saw the F2P announcement patched the game and after learning how to move while
fighting enjoy it more than GW2 and the cash shop isn’t a craptastic 1 armor skin per armor type
