Star Trek Online Expansion Lets You Play Romulans
There have been whispers. A Romulan Empire seal at the end of Star Trek Online‘s 3-year anniversary spotlight trailer sent the excitement level of Trek fans through the roof. May 2013 it teased. Was it an event, a new set of missions, or could it be…gasp…an expansion?
Today we have the official announcement from Cryptic Studios that there is indeed a Star Trek Online expansion coming on May 21st, and it is titled Legacy of Romulus. The Romulans are coming, and you can help rebuild the Romulan Star Empire. But wait, there’s more. The expansion, it will be free. That’s right, Community Manager Branflakes confirmed via the forums today that the expansion is free. There will be new C-Store offerings once the expansion goes live, but we will have to wait for more details.
Enough build up. What do we get when the expansion hits in May?
Play As A Romulan
Play as a Romulan or Reman and immerse yourself in new story-driven missions written exclusively from the Romulan Republic’s point of view.
Start As Any Faction
Create your first character as a member of the Federation, Klingon Empire, or Romulan Republic and level your captain from 1 to 50.
Warbirds
Romulan captains take command of mighty Warbird Class starships. Push the engines to the limit and unleash the new and devastating powers of the Singularity Core.
Return of Empress Sela

So that’s quite a bit of new and shiny coming in the Leagacy of Romulus Star Trek Online Expansion. There are of course some questions that are raised with the announcement of this expansion and the addition of a third faction when the Klingon Empire is currently in such an incomplete state. Hopefully more details will come out in the next few weeks regarding Cryptic’s plans for the Klingons as well as the new Romulan faction. Being able to begin any of the three factions at level 1 suggests we are going to be seeing more content.
With both homeworlds of Romulus and Remus destroyed, players of the Romulan faction will be taking on the role of a survivor who wanders the universe in the aftermath of unspeakable devastation in the Legacy of Romulus Star Trek Online expansion. You must uncover the dark secrets of the empire, and rise up against an oppressive regime to demand your freedom. All the while a mysterious new enemy stalks the Beta Quadrant.
I can’t help but once again feel the level of excitement I felt when Star Trek Online was first announced, and hopefully the improvements the game has seen over the last three years will carry over into the Legacy of Romulus expansion and make for many more exciting STO adventures.
