The War Z Gets Shiny New Website, Launching This Fall
15 Comments

The zombie apocalypse is coming — and it might be sooner than you think.

If you haven’t checked out The War Z yet, it’s a DayZ-inspired survival sandbox MMO launching this fall(!), and today it launched a new website with images, a FAQ, forums, and lots more.

The FAQ, in particular, is chock-full of useful information, including a few words on the braaaaaaaaaaains behind the operation, which includes team members who previously worked on Call of Duty, Star Trek Online, League of Legends, World of Tanks, and other games. Similar to DayZ, The War Z will utilize small-ish servers, with a maximum capacity of 250 players. Players can rent a server for a fee or join existing open servers.

The game will only require a single up-front purchase; there are no subscription fees, though there will be a cash shop. However, the devs are quick to point out that everything can be found within the game and that it is definitely not “pay to win.”

Perhaps most surprising, the game is set to go into closed beta before the end of summer and launch this fall, saying that:

The design and idea for The War Z has been in place for a couple of years – we only just started developing the specific features for the game in the past year.

It’s very optimistic, but considering the DayZ fever that’s gripped players, there’s no time like the present to get a game like this out into the market.

Is it right to call it DayZ inspired?  They’re pretty adamant in stating that they were in development before DayZ came out.  Regardless, all their nice promises won’t matter until we can see some actual gameplay footage showing off the various features.  I’m hesitantly excited about it (mostly cause of the promises and some cause of the visuals), but like you say, with as quick of a development time as they seem to be indicating, that could be a huge cause for concern.

“while we began developing our game before DayZ, we’ve been encouraged by fact that DayZ has become so popular. And yes, of course some of our latest design decisions were influenced by the DayZ community forums. ” Sergey Titov, Executive Producer. (IGN article)

“Most of our team members are fans of DayZ. We love the way DayZ was able to capture the primal feel of being alone in a big hostile environment, where your biggest enemies are not necessarily zombies, but other players. And these other players are no different from you – they’re scared humans who are trying to survive – this is the same feel we want to capture in WarZ.” Eric Norden, Senior Game Designer (same IGN article)

Also note, in that same article, they say they completely reworked their original plan to make a quest based MMO because of DayZ’s popularity.

touché. that’s the key thing I’d forgotten…that the idea had been there, but it was originally a quest-based mmo which they dropped once DayZ proved the sandbox survival model was popular and worked for this.

so the devs said this was inspired by DayZ?

To call it DayZ inspired is rather inaccurate. The WarZ website even says they have had the ideas in development for quite some time. Their new sparkly website looks nice but still does not inspire me for the game. I would like to see some beta videos rather than screenshots to get me to pre-order. Nothing about this wows me. I will stick to DayZ and all their alpha bugs for now. Side note…Gary you need to shave!

    A website.

    Wow.

I think DayZ fans should keep an eye out for this game. It looks promising. Lets just hope it delivers.

    No permadeath?

    • http://twitter.com/coreyctom Corey

there’s permadeath if you play a hardcore character.  you have the option of playing a “normal” who, if they die, are out of commission for (I think they said) 24-48 hours.

DayZ is just being updated poorly to say the least. I know it is in alpha, but I have never seen a developer ignore bugs in the very foundation of the mod/game. After Rocket did his 9001 interviews he fnally came out and said the zombie A.I cannot be fixed and that we will have to wait until standalone. Well that sucks since WarZ is already coming out soon. Also while Rocket seems like a nice guy now, he was absolutely obnoxious when he first started open alpha. I think DayZ will die because Rocket has seemed desperate to get players on. He has done SOOO many interviews in such a little time span that I think he knows it will die. He wants everyone on now, so he can still say it is popular.

I think this game will be fun but it will not be as big as DayZ since DayZ is very much an anti game in design.

I know DayZ is still in alpha but one thing is unsure is what is Rocket’s Stand-alone version of DayZ be like? What is their design goal for the stand alone. But I’m sure they want to keep that a secret till they know all the mechanics work.

It will be interesting to see how both project evolve over the next 6 months

Calling this Day-Z inspired is a kindness. This gameis just a straight up Day Z rip off. In inteiews with PC Gamer and IGN .com the developers said they were not only avid players of Day-Z but that they were using the Day-Z forums to farm for information to adjust their game. This is the lowest common denominator of game design and to be quite frank if this kind of crap happened at any other company it would be tantamount to corporate/industrial espionage.

They obviously had this game in development in one form or another at some point but to basically tailor art assets and concept directly after Rockets game is theft. Imagine if somone walked into a museum back room and found some painting an artist has not revealed to the public then made a perfect replica of it and tried to pawn it off as his own hard work . Thats what these scrum bags are doing. If they had the game in development for all these years they should have made their own game out of it not rip off every thing that makes Day-Z work in it’s Alpha form and try to take advantage of the fact it will take rocket longer to get it into stand alone form since it is more of a slow burn passion project for him then a cash grab like this game is. By the way, whats with the name? Did they really have to name it so similarly? The signs of blatant marketing gimickery are all over this steaming pile.

Supporting jackenapes like this is the downfall of the industry. People that lack all original thought do not deserve your consumer dollar. How much you want to bet not a single original concept comes out from these guys till after Rocket gets Day Z in stand alone form. Theses clowns need to be sued and thrown under every bus they can be. For his part however Rocket seems to relish the challenge and is all for the competition which makes me thingk that when Day-Z roles out in it’s stand alone form later this year that it is going to blow this slipshod attempt at capitalization out of the water….

The game industry is very much about taking ideas from another source and implementing them in your game with very little changes. It’s the same in television and cinema.

Seems like you don’t have a clue Hendrix. This game was in the works long before DayZ.
