As of this morning, Funcom‘s conspiracy-based MMO The Secret World has officially launched and brought with it the Official Launch Trailer.

No… There are no wubs to be found here — something that makes me pretty happy. I like dubstep but sometimes it’s just not the right choice for this kind of thing. Funcom went a completely different route electing to incorporate a beautiful string section melody and bluesy female voice.

If Funcom’s goal was to make viewers feel uneasy about what’s going to happen to the world, this pretty much achieves it.  In fact, the entire video gives me a sense of melancholy.  Maybe I should mention I’m a sucker for string instruments.

The video shows off some of the areas players will see in the game as well as some of the creatures. A lot of the scenery will be familiar to anyone who’s played through Kingsmouth and the Savage Coast areas. But you’ll also see Egypt, Translvania, and Stonehenge.

I can’t wait to see Translvania. Okay. Well… There’s a lot of things in the game I can’t wait to see.

Drop us a comment and let us know what you’re most looking forward to in this release.

Epic Trailer is Epic! I agree with Q also, Dubstep just wouldn’t fit TSW, but this song was perfect. TSW’s story and immersion is beyond amazing. I wish the game all the success possible.

Just FYI – the song is “This Bitter Earth” made famous by Dinah Washington — not the original though, but a remix by Max Richter.

Ooooh. Thank you. I hadn’t had the chance to look for that yet.

So, how’s the launch going? Does the developer have some great press release like “x hundred thousand units sold or pre-ordered”?

not gonna lie that trailer was pretty nice kind of reminds me of the dead island trailer with the soft music and the sad story folding? in the background.

The real question is…would Mike B have sex with this trailer?

       No.  His baby cousin?  Yes.

Good for a trailer that did a slow pace approach rather than a hype you up increase your heart beat type trailers. The song wasn’t too fantastic but it was fitting.

It’s a good game. I’ve been playing it since beta and it’s come a long way. Most of you, if you know me at all, know me as a Guild Wars 2 fan. The Secret World is trying to solve a lot of the same genre problems that Guild Wars 2 is, but it’s approaching those problems from a different angle. Both of them have relatively dynamic combat, active dodging, and both handle the way skills work differently from other games. The questing in TSW feels a lot more standard then Guild Wars 2, but then, the quests seem deeper to me. You have to think to get through some of them. In fact, it feels a lot more like a single player game.

The voice acting and writing in TSW is solid, probably even better than Guild Wars 2…but since your character isn’t voiced, a lot of it feels like a monologue. I prefer the way Guild Wars 2 handles it, by giving you choices of what you say and changing the story based on that. Because of this, TSW feels a lot more linear.

Still, with no character classes, and a chance to mix and match skills from two weapons, it’s a great game for creating builds, and also from an immersion aspect. It’s worth playing from my perspective, even though I probably won’t play it much once Guild Wars 2 is released.

Good atmosphere in a modern setting. Definitely worth checking out.
