Trion Announces "Save A Panda With STORM LEGION"

If there’s anything that we learned from RIFT’s launch it’s that Trion enjoys poking Blizzard with a stick.  Remember “We’re not in Azeroth any more.”?

Of course, Trion has admitted that they’re pretty big fans of Blizzard and WoW themselves and at this point we all know it’s in good fun.  And this time, it’s also for a good cause. Just a while ago, Trion put up a bit of news announcing “Save a panda with STORM LEGION”.

Between September 26th and October 3rd Trion will be donating $1 from every copy of Storm Legion preordered through StormLegion.com to Pandas International.

For those of you who are wondering, this deal is available world-wide — no “US only” clauses.  However, there are some funky restrictions regarding a few US states as outlined in their fine print:

Trion Worlds, Inc. will donate US$1.00 to Pandas International for each copy of Storm Legion that is pre-ordered through StormLegion.com, worldwide (excluding Alabama, Massachusetts, and South Carolina, even though we really wish they’d let us), between 12:00am PDT September 26, 2012 through 11:59pm PDT October 3, 2012, up to a maximum amount of US$10,000.00. Know why we have to do that? Maine. Weird, right? We don’t know what they have against Pandas, or why $10,000 is a magical number, either. This contribution is not tax deductible, but it would be pretty awesome if it were. Pandas International is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization located at P.O. Box 620335, Littleton, Colorado 80162, whose mission is to ensure the preservation and propagation of the endangered Giant Panda.

So, I suppose if you’re in the states listed above and you want your dollar to go to the pandas, you have two options.

  1.  Ask a friend from another state to order for you.
  2.  Just send a dollar — or your amount of choice — straight to Pandas International.

The latter might be easier.

I have to say.  I’m a fan of Trion’s methods.  Anything that give me a giggle while supporting a worthy cause is always awesome.

Trion… wins again! That’s funny and tasteful!

That is some funky limitations.  Pre-order, through StormLegion com, and only 10k.

Well.. The pre-order through storm legion is because the money is being donated via Trion. If you pre-order through amazon or something else, then money’s being scraped off the top from those stores first.  I’m sure there’s more to it than that.  This stuff is complicated.

As for the $10,000 limit.  Talk to Maine.  States are weird with their laws.

Oh, so Trion makes more money off this method. So, if Trion sells 50k more copies through Stormlegion instead of Amazon, they will donate 10k to Pandas International and keep the rest.

Possibly… But I’m also assuming it’s just more complicated to do when you have other companies involved in the process.  I’m not one to pretend I understand exactly how commercial business and contracts work or how many companies or groups are involved in making a third party sale vs making one straight from your own site.

For all I know it could be some sort of contractual or legal thing where they can only do this with copies they sell themselves.   It may be that they’re only legally allowed to contribute from the copies they personally sell rather than what GameStop or someone sells.Either way, they’re apparently still limited to $10,000 due to Maine’s restrictions.

I’m sure Trion wouldn’t mind if anyone asked them why they’re only doing it with copies sold through the storm legion site though.  They’re pretty straightforward about the rest.
