Trion Announces The Storm Legion Expansion

A few days ago, Mike Schaffnit and I talked about a “mystery box” received by PC Gamer that contained all sorts of seemingly unrelated items — unless of course you somehow put them all together and came up with a RIFT expansion.

Yesterday, Trion trademarked the name “Storm Legion”, sparking debate about what the lore of the assumed new expansion would be.

Well now we know.  As of today, Trion has officially announced the Storm Legion expansion for RIFT.

For those of you who may not be up to date on your RIFT lore, the Storm Legion is one of the Dragon Cults and is associated with Crucia, the dragon of air.  She’s a nasty “lady” that I’d say I wouldn’t want to mess with if I weren’t so excited about beating the snot out of her.

While there are still a few guessing games left regarding the expansion, here’s what we do know.  Storm Legion will feature two new continents, seven dungeons, three raids a Chronicle and something called “the Hunt”.

There will also be four new souls: one for each calling and a level cap increase to 60.

On top of all of that, there’s a little something I didn’t expect.  The expansion will include “dimensions”: customizable spaces for players and guilds.

Housing, anyone?

Oh yes… And for the fashion-conscious among you: there will be capes.

The most interesting thing about the dragons in RIFT is that they aren’t actually dragons. Greenscale, Laethys, Crucia, Regulos, etc are elemental beings that exist and rule over their respective planes.  These beings obviously seek to rule or to destroy each other.  They can not, however, travel between planes unless they control Telara which acts as a nexus.

The reason these beings appear as dragons is being they need a physical form, an avatar if you will, in order to exist within Telara.  Crucia is a total mastermind and this trailer that talks about the Infinite Gate (presumably a gate to the elemental planes) suggests she has found away to create a bridge between the planes and Telara.

This means that if she is not stopped, she could potentially exist on Telara in her TRUE form and at her full power.  This also means that just because the heroes of Telara defeated the dragon avatars of each plane does not mean they themselves have been defeated, more like banished from Telara.

Regulos was defeated once already and this was the purpose of his herald, Alsbeth, who was tasked with reforming the “avatar of regulos” because without that avatar he would be unable to exist on Telara.  So we know by this that killing the dragons doesn’t actually kill the being that possessed it.

I’m not usually into lore, I have been playing rift since launch and I really like the game even tho I never been to certain of why there are rifts to begin with. (except it sends down stuff to kill and treasure to loot ;) ) That short peace of background story you just posted got me interested in the story behind Rift and even more excited about the expansion. Thank you!

So excited for this! Perhaps I will be able to get back into the swing of playing Rift again.

Missed the most important part of the story, this is coming Fall 2012.  The only thing I wish they did was add a new race. Trion is awesome.

guys drop the swtor show and bring back the RIFT show…we all know rift will outlast swtor its only logical!

  • Nhoj1983

Holy crap.. Here’s a salute to the kings and queens of massive content generation at Trion.. If only more devs were like them.

Rift is hands down the best and most under rated MMO on the market atm. I really don’t see why you guys don’t do a rift show at lest once a month doesn’t have to be weekly but at least a show or 2 every month. Come on guys rift blows everything out the water and it going to crush gw2 with this new expansion.

    • Deathstar2x

There used to be a Rift show, but with the lack of news/stories, that’s exactly why they rolled it into TWIMMO.

      • ChristianWilliamson

which i still dont get.  theres enough swtor news to warrant its own show moreso than rift?

        really?!??

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Boiwka/1167985586 Mike Boiwka

Yes, really.  Trion went quiet (very wisely, I might add) during all the hype around the SWTOR launch.  Until the past few weeks, there really wasn’t any Rift news to cover. During that time there was a guild summit, patch 1.2, and now rather bad news on the SWTOR end of things.  I’m not sure why that should be puzzling.

if you like the Holy trinity and that type of content. Not sure how it can be compared to Guild Wars 2. It’s a new breed of MMO. They can co-exist sure. Rift is by far a better game then WoW at least, that’s for sure. They only thing I missed in Rift was proper lore, it really was kinda MEH leveling in that game.

    • MMO_Doubter

They USED TO do a Rift show called The Sanctum.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/FJR5OIFQII4WKUPYIHXMODD44Y Monolyth Tha Great

Yeah i know but it was a weekly show. I’m saying they can do a monthly show to help promote rift and to keep fans updated on the new stuff.

Wow they have been busy, looks great

  • scottsummer

Time to bring Matt and Ed together !
BTW, it looks pretty sci fi ish.

Yeah, Rift is easily the best MMO -out currently-. I can see a ‘war’ of sorts between GW2 and RIFT for the spoils of SWTOR and the bragging rights of ‘best next-gen mmo!’
