Trion Shutters Its San Diego Studio
Trion has confirmed reports of their San Diego studio being shutdown.
Trion Sr. Director of Global Communications Katie Uhlman just confirmed reports of their San Diego studio being shutdown in the following statement:
“We can confirm that the San Diego studio will be closing. The day to day operations of Defiance will be moved to our Redwood City studio where it can be managed alongside Rift and our other in development titles including ArcheAge and End of Nations. As part of this transition, we are working hard to ensure that a number of great people will be making the move from San Diego to the Bay Area and continue their work at Trion.”
While she was careful to say they will be moving people from San Diego to the one in Redwood City, she only said “a number”of people will be moved which probably means we are looking at layoffs again. The last round of Trion layoffs was just a few months ago in May. No word as yet on an estimation of how many, but I have to figure it will probably be substantial. In general when a company consolidates studios most people do not get moved over. Unless for some reason they have a ton of room in the Redwood City studio I wouldn’t expect this to be an exception to that pattern. As such I have a lot of sadness over this news.
I was actually just wondering about what changes might come following the announcement of Scott Hartsman as CEO. It’s tempting to say this is his first move, but it is also entirely possible Trion was planning to close down the studio before Hartsman took over this morning. In fact I would say it is likely this was set in motion before Hartsman came back, though he probably was consulted about it. Either way I’ll be keeping an eye out for more information.
PCGamer broke the story and you can find information on their site. Hopefully everyone who does find themselves without a job as a result of this closure will have luck finding a new one.
