My Guild Wars 2 fever is running at 103 degrees and to make it even worse we have a sneak peak video of Twilight Arbor…a level 50 dungeon in Guild Wars 2.

Twilight Arbor Sneak Peak Video

  • Diequex

Looks pretty average, if not sub-par. Hoping that there is more dungeons than what I am seeing, given that this is simply a 12 minute video.

    • http://www.facebook.com/anthony.perry.357 Anthony Perry

What exactly are you expecting to see in a video that is only the first few minutes of a dungeon that will take more than 45 mins to an hour to complete?

      • Diequex

I noted in my comment that it was a 12 minute video, so it’s obvious that there is more to dungeons than what is shown. Doesn’t detract from the fact that it looks bland.

I was expecting to see a video depicting more exciting content as opposed to generic.

      • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Did they really clear a third of the dungeon?  Is there really only three bosses in the dungeon, does that take under an hour to complete?

        • dawolv

If Ascalon Catacombs Story Mode is any indication then yes, 45min sounds about right!
          As to explorable mode:
I think their are just not showing it because it’s to hard for the journalists.
My team and I failed hard at AC.EM and when, as they say, even the devs (who should know all mechanics, struggle with it, I don’t think that’s a good thing to capture in a video!

        • http://www.facebook.com/anthony.perry.357 Anthony Perry

Story Mode was designed so that your team could experience the events occurring with Destiny’s Edge.  Explorable Mode is going to be a lot tougher, and depending on what paths you take could take longer than an hour.  Unfortunately, I have not been able to participate in any dungeon (at level 29 I was the highest leveled person in my guild).  Most of what I know is taken from video footage from Betas and Interviews from Arenanet.

this is only the first boss of a dungeon and it is on story mode.  This probably is less than half of the dungeon and its on story mode. explorable mode is where the more complex dungeons are

      • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

That’s whats so odd about these videos.  They focus on the story mode, don’t think Ive seen any gaming news stories on the explorable mode dungeon.

Seems to show the trash clear, I guess.  Hard to tell.   They don’t seem to explain much about the boss.   There seems to be a lot of NPCs arounds, but it’s not clear.    The videos just seem confusing to me.

        • Jado Cast

Yeah, the video doesn’t really explain much here, but we don’t know what has transpired up to this point in the story mode.  It helps if you have read the books to make the connection, but I can see some people just skipping the videos (just like GW 1) and just playing the game.  As a GW fan for years, I’ve complained about some of the voice acting (although its getting better) and the horrible cut scenes.  It’s a shame the cut scenes are not as immersive as the game play.  I think they just decided to put the money in the game play and the world, and less into the voice acting and story scenes since players spend most of their time playing the game.  If you are on a budget, that makes sense.

          • Old Ben

If you’re on a budget of >$60 M, though, you can probably afford to record the lines 5 or 6 times until they come out right. ;-)

They changed (at least some of) the animations in this stress test, BTW. The characters now face each other a bit more, and they have some secondary motion (dangling their arms, etc.). Unfortunately it tends to make their hands clip through the armor.

Anyway, the main problem with the story isn’t the cutscenes, it’s the actual story. :-P

          • Jado Cast

Is is the way the story is being told through your personal story line or the actual lore you take issue with?  If you read the books, of course this is totally subjective on my part, you might like the lore and concept behind what’s going on the world, or at least I find it pretty well done.  I just think they do a bad job in presentation.

          • Old Ben

The books aren’t about me. The story is supposed to be (and that’s one of its mistakes).

The plot is cheesy and patronizing, praising me before I’ve achieved anything, and treating me like the most important person in the world right from the start.

It’s like a story written for 6 year olds (by someone who doesn’t even respect their intelligence).

And it’s immersion-breaking, since it clashes with the game world, which is why it has to be kept inside separate instances.

It has other problems, too, such as having its main choices take place before you even start playing, and being bound to your race instead of your class (let’s face it, more people will play three Asuras of different classes than three warriors of different races), but those are just “mechanical” flaws.

The real problem is the narrative structure (no sense of achievement; you’re “the great hero” after a fight you didn’t choose and cannot lose) and the fact that it’s a (bad) single-player story tacked onto a multi-player game.

          • Jado Cast

Yeah, I see your point on the hero part of the story.  I’ve agreed with you on that before.  But what do you mean by,

“It has other problems, too, such as having its main choices take place before you even start playing, and being bound to your race instead of your class (let’s face it, more people will play three Asuras of different classes than three warriors of different races), but those are just “mechanical” flaws.”?Since class doesn’t matter and there are no advantages to which race you choose, why is that a “mechanical flaw?”

          • Old Ben

It’s a flaw in making the most of the assets they have. Since people are more likely to play multiple classes of the same race than multiple races of the same class, they’re not maximizing variety for players.

And putting the most important choices before the game starts makes those stories feel less interactive than if they added those choices in as part of the story (same total number of branches, but they’re gimping the feeling of interactiveness). Being given a choice during the story makes it feel a lot more personal an “alive” than having a choice before the game even starts.

So, in both cases, the options don’t affect the narrative directly, but they affect the level of interactivity and variety of the story, which also influences player experience.

          • Jado Cast

So if I understand you correctly, you would prefer to see the character “evolve” into your choice of play as you progress and that the race you choose to be as meaningful as the class you choose?  I think I get it.  That’s interesting.

          • Old Ben

Your race is obviously going to determine where you start, etc., but currently your class has no influence at all on your story, which is just silly.

One of the main complaints new players have is that there’s no “class tutorial” in the game. The personal story would have been the logical place to put that. It would also ensure that if someone plays multiple characters of the same race, they would get different stories regardless of their “biography” choices.

          • Jado Cast

You know, it just occurred to me, they actually did something more similar to what you are suggesting in GW, in the pre-searing area, which is where you learned to play the game, made your class decisions, and learned the basics.  Many people considered it to be one of the best parts of the game, and it is too bad they didn’t work that concept into GW2 somehow.

          • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Watched the video again, seemed a little easier to follow the second time.  Probably didn’t help that the QA was racing through the encounter.  For the boss fight, couldn’t tell if the Guardian was simply not taking damage, or quickly clearing conditions. He didn’t seem to be dodging damage.  Also seem there was a Asura ultimate attack(?) Golem and what looked like a Necro.

          • Jado Cast

Yeah, I think the Golem skill is one of the racial elites, I remember reading somewhere but not sure where.

    • Old Ben

It does look like pretty standard stuff, similar to Razorfen Kraul or Realm of the Fae, but if there wasn’t a “foresty” / “brambly” dungeon in the game people would ask for one. Maybe it becomes more interesting towards the end (like Realm of the Fae did). The default camera height doesn’t help much, BTW (camera in GW2 points too much towards the floor).

I think Caudecus’s Manor will probably be more original.

  • http://twitter.com/Graymarch Graymarch

Lions, tigers, and bears OH MY! just be happy that you aren’t fighting badly customized models of an orc or something as equal or worse wouldn’t want to be in a dungeon and all the sudden spring in something absolutely ridiculous as a panda man that walks and fights like a shaolin monk….

I do like the lighting of the dungeon and the way it is a sylvari themed dungeon….i can expect to see a lot of indigenous flora and fauna. And possibly some plant monster creature things.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

I can’t tell are you trashing another game or do you like GW2?

  • http://www.facebook.com/matthew.felton1 Matthew Felton

this game will last a month before people get bored with it

    • Kicknpups

Can you take that crystal ball of yours and give me the winning lotto numbers? or tell me what company will hit over 200 on the NASDAQ like Microsoft did?…Hell or even tell me who is going to the Superbowl this year?

    • Josh Rosenvelt

      Like D3 and DS?

      • Old Ben

Don’t be unfair. I got bored of DS in less than 20 minutes.

  • Krzysztof Kotarba

tbh it looks like trinity style gameplay… guy tanks mob rest dps/heal

    • http://www.facebook.com/TheJoukai Michael Riley Harrison

I don’t know how that’s possible when there are no direct heals in the game and it’s impossible to hold aggro. And even paying attention to the video and the parties life bars, no one person is only taking damage, and no one person is healing.

      • Fluffenstuffen

Actually there is a way to hold agro. Enemy npc agro is held on the closest possible target. As far as tanking, the amount of damage taken is definitely greater than any amount mitigated without dispersing the damage across all of the teammates. Also, there are a few traits and skills in the engineer line that let you ground target medkits on to nearby players which in essence is a dedicated heal. They don’t heal for much but I can see engineers (and probably other classes) doing dedicated support.

    • Kicknpups

Curious to if you were watching the same video as me? I didn’t see any tanking beside the NPC doing it (which they eventually leave as you progress through the dungeon). Also  only healing comes from yourself or a Element or even a Guardian but nothing to where you are going to keep a group alive…Trolllllololololol…..

    • Old Ben

Yeah, that special kind of “trinity style” gameplay where the enemies keeps switching targets and players heal themselves.

  • Jay

I like that the dungeon has an outdoor feel to it. If I’m going to be spending over an hour somewhere, I don’t necessarily want it to be dark and dank all the time.

Story mode is kool and all, but I’m really looking forward to Explorable modes. :)

  • Sharuko

Pretty funny how this one 12 minute video showed off 33% of GW2′s PvE end game content.

  • http://twitter.com/Graymarch Graymarch

People need to stop being bitter because of some of their game player base has dropped and come over to someone else’s game and blame it on them…..

And also as long as their are people who like a game it will stay a while so stop bashing other peoples game……

I mean look at D3 alot of people hate it but it still there…..cause people like it

God forbid wow is still there but people like it…

Stop being so opinionated towards someone liking a game just come onto gamebreaker, facebook, or what ever damn social networking site to just bash? Talk about heartless bastards more depressing than having to hear an old woman slowly losing her mind over dementia and being senile…

this look like something im going to enjoy over and over again if that just 20% of story mode explorable mode is going to be awesome cant wait to get lost in that.

  • http://www.facebook.com/shane.cominotto Shane Cominotto

This game does not really have an end game new content will be added all the time and events swapped out This is ONE sneak peak you cannot possibly know untill launch what content there is for high levels and on that note levels mean nothing in gw2 cause u can go do a level 30 dungeon and it will sidekick you down to the correct level… End game starts at level 1.

@facebook-673340488:disqus  : really a month i highly doubt that, this game has so much to offer all you scrubs think that mmos are about DUNGEONS DUNGEONS OMG DUNGEONS … No guild wars 2 is simply not like that the entire game is built to have fun its not made to grind just to get to max level just to do dungeons, its made to enjoy every moment. If you get bored after one month then your expectations are set way to high.

    • http://www.facebook.com/matthew.felton1 Matthew Felton

I was wrong it was less then a month
