Live Game Development Details Emerge For Guild Wars 2
10 Comments

Many gamers have expressed concern as to how much post-launch attention ArenaNet would give Guild Wars 2 considering there is no subscription fee.  Colin Johanson put up a blog post yesterday that should more than assuage any lingering doubts.  He kicked off by stating, “Our goal is to continue to raise the bar by keeping the game constantly updated with more high-quality content than any other game has offered before.”  That’s a pretty bold expectation to set, but he backed it up by saying they’ve already split their live support staff—which is ten times the size of the original Guild Wars live team—into more than seven different teams, each with a specific focus:

The Live Security team fights bots, spammers, and hackers.  Basically, these guys try to clean up the dregs of society.  Members of the Live Response team listen to feedback, fix bugs, and make balance changes to the game.  The Living World team adds new content to the game world, focusing specifically on PvE and WvW, while the PvP/E-Sports team supports and nurtures the competitive PvP community.  We’ll see some of the Holidays and Event team’s work before this month ends and we should be seeing some information on what’s in store for us next week!  The Commerce team is responsible for making sure the in-game economy is running smoothly and the Mac and Performance team is intent on making sure the game runs smoothly on a variety of platforms.  Bonus teams are also mentioned who will build cool new features for the game that are outside the scope of the other teams.  There are multiple bonus teams at work right now and we’ll be seeing some of the fruits of their labor in November.

Overall, I’m very excited to see ArenaNet put so much emphasis on the continued support of Guild Wars 2.  I can’t wait to see what the Mad King Thorn has in store for us during the Halloween event and I look forward to seeing what other surprises they have in store for us!

Read over this last night and was/still am very stoked!  Enjoying this game so much on all levels (wvw, spvp, pve, etc) and I have a 80 with full exotics (short of backpack obviously)/runes/sigils.

Do we know how big these “teams” are? As one can say size does matter:P

If they have the right tools and reports in place, the teams don’t have to be that large. You have to figure they already have content in the “can” for the next year.  With there instanced based design, it should be fairly easy to deliver new content.

I would hope that would be the case. But I still wonder the size of these teams.

Obviously, anyone who was worried about this never played the original for any length of time. GW1 was well supported for a long time (well, pretty much up to when GW2 began development, and even then they had a dedicated team until this past year).

This is one thing players shouldn’t be worried about – at least until they announce GW3!

I have no doubt that ArenaNet will have the best live teams to update GW2.  Its been almost 6 weeks since launch and i think there have been at least 4 major patches and about twice that many minor patches. The game is already looking far slicker than launch.

I can tell that ArenaNet is extremely serious about this game’s success (not like i havent assumed it before). I look forward to seeing what they have to offer.

My concern when you have multiple teams is the communication between them, to keep things more connected and that they dont feel like different games in the long run for ppl that enjoy the multiple aspects of the game, not that is bad, just sometimes things end up pasted together.

  • tekert

Im just concerned about the communication between the teams, if dont in the long run sometimes things feel disjointed for ppl that enjoy the multiple aspects of the game. it already feels that way a little but thats how it is.
