The much, much, much awaited Warcraft Movie’s saga continues. Sam Raimi left as director in the latter part of last year, and the latest bit of news is that director Duncan Jones has taken his place as Director. He’s previously directed films such as Moon, and Source Code, receiving much critical acclaim.
Hollywood Reporter also lets us know about various other elements of the new film:
Charles Leavitt (Blood Diamond)
Stuart Fenegan (Moon, Source Code), Chris Metzen
Thomas Tull (The Dark Knight, Inception, 300), Jon Jashni (The Hangover, Clash of the Titans)
Charles Roven, Alex Gartner (Blizzard)
Expected budget: Over $100,000,000
Filming: Expected to start in Fall 2013
Theatrical Release: Potentially 2015
What do you think of all this? The Warcraft Movie has to be one of the longest video game movies ever from inception to release, and there’s still not actually been any firm release from Blizzard regarding this latest news, or a start date. People are saying it’s alive and well, but will it really happen?
The important thing is whether the Warcraft Movie will actually be any good. There’s no doubting that Blizzard’s team can write an inspired story, and that their CGI in their cinematics and trailers is second to none, but can it all come together with real actors and fit neatly into a movie format? I’m not sure. It seems to me that they will either have to take a pocket section of existing lore, as there’s no way they can rattle through the entire lore history of the game in one movie, without it being completely trivial and lacking depth. I am not entirely sure what section of WoW lore would be the best suited to the big screen, what do you guys think?
And, what’s more, will WoW players be interested in seeing their preferred game made into a film? I must admit that the idea of a Warcraft movie doesn’t really excite me, but I’m neither a lore nerd nor a movie buff! Let me know your take on this in the comments below!
