Top 5 Warrior Weapons You Need To Know In Guild Wars 2

One of the most exciting and unique experiences that Guild Wars 2 offers involves the way even a specific classes play style will drastically change based on the weapon you have equipped.

In order to find perfect synergy amongst your talents and secondary skills, you first need to understand the basics of what abilities you will have based on the weapons you will have equipped. That’s why today I’m going to break down the top 5 weapons you will want to know when it comes to playing a Warrior in Guild Wars 2.

Before I get started, however, it’s important to remember that weapon abilities and combination strength comes from covering strengths and weaknesses in balancing secondary abilities as well as personal talents. Many combinations can be built to be extremely powerful, but these are the weapons you will want to keep an eye on!

#5) You Shall Not Escape! Main Hand: Axe – Off Hand: Mace

This combination of weapons is coming in at number 5 for its amazing secondary weapon set capabilities. While this combination may have great primary weapon set potential, it works great as a supporting set of weapons that offer a lot of utility to compliment whatever your main weapon choice may be.

As a warrior you’re only as good as the enemies you can actually hit, and this combination will directly support your ability to not only hit your opponent harder with the Mace #4 ability Crushing Blow, but will also allow you to chase down those pesky Engineers as they try to run away. Between your Axe #3 ability Throw Axe, Mace #5 ability Tremor, and the Axe’s jumping Burst ability Eviscerate, enemies will be hard pressed to escape your massive damage potential without soaking up a lot of damage in the process.

#4) Death From Afar Main Hand: Rifle

It might seem very unnatural in theory for a Warrior to embrace the idea of utilizing a rifle as a primary DPS weapon, but in execution it couldn’t be more overpowered against other melee reliant classes. The entire rifle ability set is entirely based around obliterating an enemy before they even can reach you. And when they finally do, you can always knock them back to where they started with your #5 ability Rifle Butt.

The damage potential that can go out with using a rifle is absolutely ridiculous, and possibly stands as one of the highest DPS weapons for a Warrior at the moment. Add in the fact that once your enemy finally closes the ranged gap and you have no more cooldowns to get some distance, you can simply switch to your secondary melee ranged weapons and punish them for even considering trying to get close to you.

#3) Stalwart Defender Main Hand: Mace Off Hand: Shield

If taking damage and protecting your team is the name of your game, you won’t want to miss this weapon combination. With just your weapon abilities alone you are given access to a counter attack, an interrupt, two stuns, and an invulnerability! With this much utility from just your weapon set alone at your disposal, you are more than capable of charging in on the front lines and taking control of the entire fight while you harass and annoy any enemy in your way.

#2) Poke, Poke, Bleed! Main Hand: Sword – Off Hand: Sword

A weapon set that is very near and dear to my heart, a bleed spec! While I’m usually about mix and matching for different utility when dual wielding, I fell in love with this simple combination right from the start! Equipping a single sword in either hand gives you access to two bleeding abilities that can be mixed and matched with any other one handed weapon.

When combined together, however, you create a devastating combination of bleed ticks that will quickly whittle your enemies health down to nothing in a small amount of time. Once again, any enemy reliant on being up close to deal substantial amounts of damage will be stuck dealing with your #3 slowing ability Hamstring and your immobilizing Burst ability Flurry. Simply stack your bleeds and hit a snare, then back away and watch your target bleed!

#1) Inescapable Death Main Hand: Greatsword

Warriors were meant to wield heavy and destructive weapons and the Greatsword brings just that! Not only by using this weapon is your damage output at a significant high, but the amount of chase and escape utility it brings skyrockets this weapon to a must have for almost every Warrior.

Let’s face it… being able to stay in range and hit your target is the only way you are going to deal damage without a ranged weapon equipped. But if you could just keep from being kited by those pesky Rangers you would be able to teach them a lesson or two! And with the Greatsword in your hands you can do just that. Utilizing both its #3 ability Whirlwind Attack in unison with its #5 ability Rush there is no enemy that can escape your massive ability to close a gap between you and your enemy. Additionally, these abilities are a great tool of increasing the gap between you and your opponent and greatly increasing your chances of escaping a fight when the entire team begins to zerg into your 1v1 battle.

The Warrior class is by no means a delicate one to play. It’s all about finding a way to catch your enemy and beat its face in! Knowing what weapons to use for each situation will come to players over time. But hopefully now that you know what the best weapons have to offer you will be able to get an early edge on the battlefield! To arms my fellow Warriors!

is it just me or is gamebreaker getting more and more biased with its gaming ‘news’ ?

    • http://twitter.com/MikeSchaffnit Mike Schaffnit

because other gaming sites dont make “Top 5″s?

      • Ringo_393

no i was referring more to amount of guild wars 2 coverage compared to anything else, and how sometimes there are hits that paint some games in a bad light before the game even launches. Tera, i think, was an example of that. Don’t get me wrong i love you guys and what you do. I’ve been watching Gamebreaker since the beginning :) i’m just saying what i feel like I’ve noticed…who knows it could just be my imagination.

        • Brosaxon

To be fair Gamebreaker didn’t paint Tera on a bad light before it’s release.

Tera was already that bad or worse by the time the GB staff got their hands on it.

        • Pat Hamilton

They talked up Tera all the time a while ago.  Then they got the chance to play the beta and didn’t like it.  They talked up Guild Wars 2 way back and then got a chance to play it and liked it a lot.
Also, Tera is out already.  They don’t need to talk about it because you can just go play it.  They are already giving out a week trial for it.  When Guild Wars 2 comes out, the news for it will slow as well.

        • ScottHawkes

           1) When we respond positively to a game it’s been because we thought it was good. 2) When we respond negatively to a game it’s because we thought it has more issues than positives.
If we have covered a game it’s because it’s either a) popular b) has something interesting to talk about or c) both.
Combine those elements to answer the reason for just about any story you see.
Guild Wars 2 is a very good game in the opinion of many people who have played it, not all, but many.
It has had a lot of news to talk about with a lot of people interested in sharing opinions.
          ie GW2 = 1, 2 a, b, c.

          • Jay

This doesn’t explain your bias towards Guardians… ;)

          • Old Ben

Mentioning a) and b) at the end was a totally unnecessary deviation from Kolmogorov complexity.

Anyway, I think Ringo was talking more about the fact that a lot of GW2 articles aren’t really “news”, they just feel a bit like “what excuse can we come up with for talking about GW2?”. And the same applies to a few other games (ex., WoW / MoP).

And I guess the answer to that is mainly a) and d).

            d) being “websites supported by ads need hits”.

It does lead to some shallow articles, but that’s a generic problem of web journalism (or, now that I think about it, of professional journalism in general – with the possible exception of state-funded media, which doesn’t have to worry about popularity or advertising, but can suffer from other biases).

In other news: You mentioned in a different thread that you’ve never been offered an exclusive interview, but have you ever actually asked for one? If so, from whom, and what was the reply? I’ve noticed several sites with “developer interviews” where they say they just sent the developer an e-mail with a few questions and got the answers back. That would seem like a more interesting “filler” in slow news days – and more likely to get other sites directing traffic to you.

For example, some time ago Q posted an article about Fall Of Eternity, and one of the game’s developers actually posted in the comments section. This suggests to me that, if GBTV had sent him an e-mail asking for an interview, he (or one of the other developers) would have given you one. It’s probably not as easy to get an interview with one of Blizzard’s, Trion’s, BioWare’s or Arena Net’s developers, but probably still worth trying.

Remember, you’re only five people away from Kevin Bacon, or whatever.

        • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

They seem to give Tera every chance. I was especially impressed with the way they handled the preview addition prior to the starting area.  They could have told GG it was a preview and you would return to the start area. Instead, they allow him to experience the change on his own.

    • QSatu

they cover what is popular and what they like =]

    • EndrzGame

Who’s being biased about what exactly? This isn’t a news piece. It’s Schaff’s Top 5 Warrior weapons.
Guild Wars 2 is generating a lot of buzz and for good reason. The guys are just talking about what they like in the game.

    • David Alcon

I actually enjoy the biasedness. I like when people are excited about what they are reporting on, play what they’re reporting on, and are giving honest OPINIONS about what they are reporting on.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/cpjontek?feature=mhee cpjontek

It’s just you.  IMHO this was an informative video.  Guild Wars has a lot of different PvP possibilities and rather than theorycraft every skill out myself, I appreciate another’s helpful viewpoints.

    • Jado Cast

What would you rather they talk more about?  Don’t just complain, give feedback.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/5CEOLXR4SLV2H477IBJS2APKVM BEN

A bias towards good games and a bias against not so good games is natural.
You have to understand just how good Guild Wars 2 is.

    • http://www.kaiketsu.enjin.com/ Corey Jenkins

I mean like it or not, but GW2 is like the big topic at the moment. I mean look at the comments on everything related to GW2 compared to the comments on other things. I’m sure after the GW2 hype dies down a bit they’ll move on to the next huge topic. its just how news sites work generally. Same thing happened when swtor was the big topic. Not to mention though that it seems like a lot of them are fans of GW2, but being a fan of a good game doesn’t necessarily mean your biased.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

It was a good solid article.

  • Old Ben

I intend to make a norn warrior and dual-wield asuras. Although, now that I think about it, the opposite would probably be even more impressive.

    • Jay

       Talk about titan grip…

  • lee long

where’s hammer?? good for cripple/AOE stun/knockdown. i use Hammer+Rifle, i could kill one mob down without getting any dmg

    • Iwerks

I’m surprised Sword + Warhorn didn’t make this list. The single most impressive mobility set is left out? I’m surprised. At least in PvP, where getting from point A to point B as quickly as possible is so critical, it makes for one of the best secondary sets available.

      • Kagitaar

Well since the list could only hold roughly a quarter of the possible weapon combos, a lot has to be left out.

  • Pat Hamilton

Still a fan of Axe Axe

    • http://twitter.com/Leithian Duane Lee Hampson

yes this but as my swap, rifle was my primary, ranged is way way better for survivability

      • Pat Hamilton

I use axe axe for groups and then kite tougher enemies with the rifle as swap.  So same setup as you except switched :)

  • http://twitter.com/quickshot10101 Rick ‘Quickshot’

Sword/Axe was my favourite. Rifle as my weapon switch.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1151407861 Trey Alsup

Before getting into weapon combos here’s the skinny on how to think about each weapon.
    1. MH Axe – Pure Damage. With the biggest hitting burst skill Eviscerate.

    2. MH Mace – Less Damage / Single target CC. Burst skill stuns

    3. MH Sword – Highest Maneuverability. Burst skill is tons of tiny blows. Sword can play as a condition weapon or a pure damage weapon but rewards high crit builds.

    4. Hammer – 2H – AE and CC focused. High Utility if you can get to your target.

    5. GreatSword – Pure Damage and High Maneuverability. Snare is only CC. Hundred Blades is arguably OP.

    6. Rifle – Single Target Range. Like Sword in that it splits its damage between pure damage and conditions. Snare and Knockback give it high utility for a ranged weapon.

    7. Longbow- AE Range. Considered weak but still strong in WvW because of its focus on AE abilities. Many think this will get an adjustment before launch.

    8. OH Sword – Bleeds. Want a bleed build? OH Sword is your weapon

    9. OH Axe – Fast Adrenaline building. A double hitting fury builder and an AE spinning attack

    10. OH Mace – Knocks down targets in a line, which makes it high disruption.

    11. OH Warhorn – Group Utility Essentially two shouts. One is a group swiftness buff and the other an AE that buffs endurance regen for friendlies and debuffs the enemy.

    12. OH Shield – Defense / Utility. A charge / stun and a 3 second block on low cooldown. Passively increases defense.

  • http://twitter.com/DaPhoolz Rp TheFoolz

i think these can be totally different depends on player’s playstyle. and i’m quite sure they’ll change over time.

sounds interesting tho, anyway i can’t say anything much about it since i didn’t touch the warrior at all.

maybe after launch :) damn, the release date giving so much hope and excitement.

    • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

Yep, Im adding a run and gun Norn Warrior to my character mix.

  • QSatu

I actually cant wait to see BuildCast next week. See all those crazy builds theorized and then laugh at them 2 months after release where people will find out 90% of them are uneffective etc. XPP

  • Jay

It’s the Mike n Mike show!

  • SiderFace

How’s guild application work with you guys?  I’d be more than interested in joining the cause (PvP/WvW/PvE – in that order)

  • http://twitter.com/dularr Dularr

The player base really needs this type of article.  Weapon select is a fundamental choice on how your profession plays.   But, it clearly show a weakness in the GW2 character creation.  For most MMOs you work through a starting area so you can learn the basics of the game and then at a certain level you decide how you want to play your character.

Without that fundamental overview of combat types at character creation, I would not be surprised if you end up with a number of player who never learn you can change weapons and change your gameplay combat.

    • Old Ben

There’s a pop-up when the “weapon swap” button becomes unlocked (at level 7, IIRC).

There’s even a group of NPCs in Claypool that will train players in the use of swords, shields or rifles, but unfortunately, once you complete the training, you can’t repeat it (so if you complete training with the rifle, you won’t get a chance to train with the sword or the shield). They should probably expand that “quest” to cover other weapons, and make it infinitely repeatable.

  • http://www.facebook.com/mjtlsnelling Matthew Snelling

I thought that this breakdown was rather uncritical. I see all of the positives pointed out for these weapons and I see how one can use them in the ways mentioned – and clearly they are meant to be used in this manner. After all, each skill, each weapon is a tool, and how you use it makes all the difference, but I do find statements like, “there is no enemy that can”, for any context, complete rubbish (absolutes are almost always incorrect by default). Every tactic in this game has counter tactics, or shutdowns if you will. The theory stated above is fine as long as the opponent doesn’t do something you don’t want them to do. If a warrior charges in and a mesmer whacks F3, the warrior is suddenly dazed and interrupted for a number of seconds and can no longer use skills! If they whack F4, everything misses no matter what due to distortion. Introduce a chaos storm or various skills that provide confusion (such as F2), and the warrior self-terminates. Every profession in the game has their own method of achieving this kind of defence, one way or another, above I provide one simple example with the mesmer profession. These direct damage attacks, regardless of whether they include snares, can be broken out of (via many skills that break cripple), escaped (via skills that allow teleportation or stealth), or countered (via interrupts, confusion, retaliation and the like).

No battle will ever go as smoothly as expected, regardless of how perfect one thinks their build is. I think it is important for players to critically try to rip their own builds apart, pretend to be the opponent(s) and assume they will do what is needed to tear it apart.

The truly wonderful thing about this game is that it does, for once and for all, allow us to say, “May the best man, or asura, win!”

  • DoctorOverlord

With the release date finally release I’ll need to get serious in thinking about builds.   Good article to help think about that.   Greatsword was going to be one of my pics, nice to see another viewpoint bringing up the strengths.
