Square Enix Updates Final Fantasy XIV Site

It’s not just Final Fantasy XIV that’s getting a revamp — the game’s website has already launched version 2.0, which went live late last week.

By now you’ve probably seen a screenshot or two of the “new” FFXIV, but the new website has the entire batch of pretty new images that were revealed by Square Enix at E3, including character creation and battle scenes. There are also oodles of concept art and promises of new videos on the horizon.

And all without that annoyingly loud intro music from the last site.

There are no actual details on the site direction of the gameplay for FFXIV v2.0 which should be going into beta in late 2012 (with a full re-launch probably coming in early 2013), but previous reports hint at major revisions to crafting, new 24-man raids, and chocobo breeding. Kweh!

Are the revisions to Final Fantasy XIV enough to get you to try the game again once 2.0 ships? Or to try it for the first time?

unless its a complete overhaul and total redesign from the ground up, i have zero interest.

      it is a total overhaul

not really, I’ll agree that they’re changing (and have changed) A LOT, but a few of the biggest issues for me at least were that there was not only a lack of different areas, but the areas they do have are full of obvious copy pasted terrain. The game looks great, but poor level design was a huge problem for me that as far as I know will never be touched on.

I thought I heard something about them addressing this…but I’m not 100% sure. I haven’t played FFXIV at all (for obvious reasons), but I am looking forward to what 2.0 brings. I hope people don’t just completely dismiss 2.0 just because of the initial release.

The maps are beign redone 100%.
They took a nuke and blew up every single zone and started from square 1.
The large borderless copy pasted maps are being scraped in favor of “smaller” diverese zones with multiple points of intrest and minimal reuse of assests.

        • Gabriel Contreras

They are completely changing those areas. They have maps of how the 2.0 maps will look like. They’re using a completely new engine so they decided to remake the concept of the maps. While smaller, there will be much less copy pasted terrain, though honestly you barely ever went through the entire world. They also stated that in 2.0 the way leveling is done will change. Grinding will not be the primary way of leveling. There are many more things that are changing which people complained about before.

I’m still keeping an eye on this game. 2.0 seems to have a lot of promise and I would love for it to be enough to bring me and others back to the game. As for the website getting a facelift, it is sort of the face of a game, so it really does need to make a goo first impression, so I am happy they’ve improved it and got rid of some of the annoyances.

I think that they need to watch GW2 very closely and take a leaf out of their book. One of the reasons I like GW2 so damn much is because it gives me that “I’m the hero of my own story” feeling that the early final fantasy’s gave, and it gives you stuff that you WANT to do rather than HAVE to do. When I play FF7 or FF9, I fall in love all over again, and I can’t wait to see what’s around the next corner in those games. An additional point worth mentioning is, the game world. GW2′s city’s are so huge and so stunning and so alive and so full of their own flavour, that it actually brings me back to FF12, which may not have had the best story, but it had awesome city’s that I WANTED to explore, and wanted to live in (anyone remember that subterranean market in the starting city? EPIC).

In fact, just steal GW2, put the flavour from FF12, a chocobo to run around on, airship tours, the themepark from FF7, the academy from FF8, Trance effects and some flavour from FF9, and I think you have a game I would play forever.

And put black mage hats on all the little people! ^_^

And I take it back about the story in 12 ^_^ who am I kidding, it was damn entertaining.

Not sure I’d agree 100% with ‘nobody gets a second chance.’ Maybe not in the way 14 is doing a total make-over, but how many dead/dying/weak MMO’s flipped over to F2P to get fresh crowd of people back into the game. I know I went back to try a few of them and even put money down on a game I would of never bought the box for back in the day. Again, not the same as what 14′s doing but pretty much the same thing in my book.

I was looking at getting into 14.1 at release, even popped back into 11 for a few months beforehand to get back into the swing of things, but ended up hearing all the horror stories before it was too late. Loved 11, but it would take a fair bit of amazing news to make me look at looking at getting into 14 again.

man, I’ve always been a big Final Fantasy fan, but lately I haven’t gotten that same epic storyline feel that they were so well known for. Final fantasy 13 was a little too cheesy at some parts, and a little awkward compared to some of the other stories in the series. I was really hoping 14 would do well when it launched too, was super excited for this game, but then it flopped. Played this game almost on day one, and it felt like I was playing a game that got shipped halfway through the development process. I really hope they look closely at their games and try and bring back some old story telling elements and awesome memorable characters. The stuff they are known for doing really well basically. I’ll have to how it does when its “re launched” I guess, but i’ll probably be so deep into GW2 by then that I might not even give this game a glance.

Once again the old man from Gamebreaker can’t do his homework. I guess it’s from a stroke he suffered, you can tell from his aphasia. Maybe he’s just drunk.

The lodestone has monthly updates from yoshi-P. If i recall correctly letter 30 went out just before E3. These letters discuss mostly the current version but also plans for 2.0

On the forums which are accessable to anyone who wants to read has daily updates from community reps about planed systems and updates on ver 2.0

The revamp announcement which had a press release last October (2011) has a time line attached to it and they have confirmed alpha/beta testing from September – December (2012) for both PC and PS3. And the Ver 2.0 launch planned for Jan (2013)

Nice “speculation” when SE themselves already confirmed the plan.

As for 2.0 saving the game… maybe not for PC exclusive gamers. But there is a huge install base with the PS3, around 50+ million. Capturing just a fraction of these potential gamers will be a success for SE. And not to forget Anyone who had previously purchased XIV at any point during ver 1.x gets ver 2.0 for free as well as a free “welcome back” ver 2.0 trial.  Thats at least 600k potential players right off the bat. (box sales from release)

    P.S.
learn to say Chocobo. It’s CHO KO BOW.  not Chalk ka bo.

      Chea! Fanboy represent!

      • DrossRocket

yeah I’m a fanboy, But whats their excuse for shitty reporting?

        • http://twitter.com/Picoman Picoman

Yeah, they missed the fact that Yoshi-P has given us 31 producers letters so far and that the forums have a constant flow of dev posts. Not to mention the two live letters on youtube. For sites like this, keep an eye out in mid-August for 2.0 promotion. Currently we are getting patch 1.23 which has the storyline for brining about the cataclysmic change coming to Eorzea.

So you’re referencing an almost year old development chart? Yea, we’ll see, lol.

    Did you over-under your over-under date? :P

I think fans will go back and check it out if they know the developer is trying really hard to improve the game for them. It says a lot about a company when they are trying to make things right for the player base, you don’t come across that very often anymore.

I don’t think it will attract many more first time players just yet tho after all the bad responses on the internet that it has received.
