Chat Bubbles: What Is Your Most Hilarious MMO Moment?

MMO gamers can rack up scads of humorous anecdotes from their adventures in their favorite games. Being (mostly) a social experience means MMOs are a breeding ground for funny encounters and in today’s episode of Chat Bubbles, we want to hear your most hilarious story.

Thinking back over the past decade of playing online games, I regret not keeping a journal of the most outrageous moments. I know there were many nights where I sprayed soda all over my keyboard when someone said (or did) something ludicrous to make me laugh. Remembering all of those little inside jokes is the challenge.

There is one MMO moment, however, that I won’t soon forget and it dates backs to the first month of the release of World of Warcraft. I convinced my father and brother to join my adventures in Azeroth and since this was their first MMO, I decided to show them the ropes. I was leading them to various quest objectives in the night elf starting zone of Teldrassil and they had a quest to kill a giant spider in the northwest part of the map.

As they attempted to follow me, they would get caught on a rock or take the long way around a tree and I kept having to wait for them. I was constantly typing to them to “Keep up!” or “Follow me closely.” I couldn’t find the elusive arachnid so it wasn’t long before I was lost and leading them in circles. But they continued to follow like lemmings and at one point I jumped over a tree branch only to find myself falling down off of a large cliff.

Splat! My character died and I instantly began to type the words “STOP!” But I was too late. My father’s night elf landed right beside and let out a groan as he died. A second later my brother’s character crumpled onto the ground on the other side of me.

I laughed and couldn’t compose myself for several minutes. I eventually had to call my dad to ask why they both jumped off the cliff. His reply was a defiant, “You said follow me. So I followed.”

What was your funniest MMO experience? Did you have an epic fail moment in front of your entire guild? Did someone say something completely inappropriate over voice chat? Was an impromptu naked dance party the talk of your server for days? Share your hilarious MMO moments with us by leaving us a comment below!

I feel like a failure, I can’t remember any at the moment.  Ugh!

Probably flying out in open sea to cross an expanse quicker than a flight path, dying of fatigue and falling to the water. Then spending 10 minutes walking as a ghost to rez myself and finish the journey (plenty of time with a full fatigue timer) only for my ghost to suffer fatigue and dying to which i find rather ironic. All to save 5 minutes and a repair bill :c
I think it was crossing from wetlands to hillsbrad in WoW.

I’ve had many a funny moment, but the one that always sticks out in my mind is when AoC first launched.

I was in this zone where there is a huge mountain/cliff, can’t remember the damn name now…  I had fought my way across the zone and saw the top of the cliff, so I’m the type of player who always has to climb the highest points I can see.

I finally figured out how to get to the top and was admiring the view of the zone.  Next thing I know another player appears behind me from out of nowhere and kicks me off the side of the cliff.  I fell for like a good 15 seconds before I hit the ground and exploded into a pile of meat.

The thing that cracks me up the most is when I was falling to my death I turned to look back up at the top and I saw the player cheering at me falling.  I wasn’t even mad, I think it is amazing that he was there and how long had he been waiting there for someone like me to come along just to do that?

Yes… my moments (there were 3) took place on my last day of playing WoW actually.

1 – Getting Back Into the Game:
So here’s what happened, I was getting tired of WoW (it’s still a good game), and Mist of Pandaria wasn’t a expansion I was looking forward to, so I started looking into other games. The one that stood out to me was Guild Wars 2. I was REALLY hooked on GW2 but I remember the roughly 7 years of investment and fun moments me and my friends had in WoW, so I decided to give WoW one last shot to hold my attention before I left. Now at this point I hadn’t played WoW in about a month since I was spending that time in GW2, so when I reentered WoW I was like, “OMG soooo many buttons! How come I can’t double tap to dodge?!?!? Why can’t I cast while moving? How come my melee attacks only hit one target?” I caught myself time and time again stutter stepping cause I would try to dodge out of attacks.

    2 – When Giants Fly:
Anyways the patch for MoP launched and I wanted to give the new features a try. I remember the enslaving undeaad ability that DKs got (my main was Blood DK) so I flew over to Icecrown to enslave one of the giant undeads. I did it and I got the idea of maybe I could fly over head and let him run below me destroying everything so I tried it but when I flew up I looked down trying to find him but couldnt, then I look behind me and the huge thing is freaking FLYING my eyes were like O_O. So I went over to Dalaran and flew this giant thing over the city like a menace. XD

    3 – Rage Quit:
So the last feature I wanted to try was the scenarios and more specifically the Theramore Scenario. So I queued up and popped in with 2 other team mates, for some reason they wound up leaving the group but I continued. I was sorely disappointed at the ease of this whole thing I went through grabbing basically the whole instance and decimating every mob I encountered. Then I noticed a red circle on the floor while one of the mobs was whirl winding and coming from Guild Wars 2 I was like “I see what ya did thar Blizz”. Anyways the last dumb tank boss was cake sadly enough and when I went to talk to Jaina she’s all like “I need a moment to think about how damn crazy I am cya”. SO I was left there thinking “What the hell was the point of the Horde staying in a city they just bombed and what was the point of the Jaina trying to defuse a already exploded bomb?”. So I was pretty upset about the whole thing so I left the instance but when I loaded into the world I spawned like 200 yards in the air… Now normally I would activate the my Gnomish Gravity Well To keep myself from dying …. but because I had sooooo many freaking buttons I was looking everywhere frantically trying to find it before I hit the floor SPLAT dead… “Nope just nope” I took it as a sign that I should probably not hang around WoW much longer. Looking back though was a hilarious moment.

My first MMO was guild wars 1, I started playing freshman year of college.  It was also my first computer game. Needless to say, I was horrible. I played in the same room as my guild mates, who were real life friends and avid gamers. I quickly realized that when I zoned into a quest area with them I was basically invincible. As an elementalist I feel in love with AoE, in particular the spell “METEOR SHOWER!” That is what I would scream every time I cast it.

In guild wars one enemies appeared as red dots on the mini map.  So here is the conversation I would hear from my two friends and what appeared on their screens.

“Alright Jacob the quest starts over here…” – Zane

    “Zane, Jacob inst here…” -Nick

“He zoned in I saw him where did he go?” -Zane

“OH MY GOD LOOK AT THE MINI MAP!” Nick the mini map is covered with thousands of little red dots.

“GUYS GUYS CHECK OUT ALL THE RED DOTS THIS IS AMAZING…..METEOR SHOWER!”

    “Nick pop your elite!” -Zane

“I already did run, RUN!” -Nick

“I cant break aggro, great I’m dead” – Zane

    “Im dead too” – Nick

“Guys did you see how many I hit?”-Jacob

    “Yeah come rez us…”-Zane

    “I cant Im dead,” -Jacob

    “I hate you,” -Zane

When War games first got into warcraft, I had some healer mate whisper me if I`d come help their team out.
Being Undead Fire mage/PvPest I was up for a giggle.
So there I was in Gilneas defending a base solo, killed some rogue twice & no one came for about 3-5 minutes, when all of a sudden I got a whisper:
“Are you going to cap that flag or what?”
Well, how the hell was I meant to know they`d put me on Alliance side, I saw red flag, thought it was already capped. D`Oh!

Mates best one, he is awful at PvP, so one time I /w him about a bot in Uldum that I`d killed few times easily, told him to potter over & get some practice.
Little did I know, just as I chased some other player my mate died, turns out player had woken up & killed him, so I gave chase.
They were Shadowpest, me Mage. Shadowpest cast levitate whilst mid air & DoTted me up. I cast slowfall & spammed spellsteal & silence, only to see their soon to be corpse heading full pelt into the dunes.
Shortly after, they came back & did several emotes indicating they were slightly more then miffed :D

    Ah the noob i was, here it goes;

As many other i was totally new to the mmo thingy and started with WoW, got 10 days guest pass back in feb of 2005. And i went for a Nightelf rogue (still got it ^^).

I can remember i was pretty much confused and my buddy was way head of me, lvl 13 at least ^^. So here i was all alone trying to play this game, and suddenly i saw a dude with a bow and thought how the heck do i shoot my bow. So i run after this guy, and try to chat and ask how i shoot my bow like he did, dont think i got any answer, but i kept asking and asking till i got a bit angry cause i couldn’t do the cool stuff he did with his bow, but after awhile i gave up. I think many days or even weeks went by until i found out he was a hunter class..haha doh!

I also remember this guy who asked if i could hold on to 1 gold for him Oo, man in the early days of WoW that was alot of money, hehe.

Can’t remember all the funny stuff that’s happened to me in MMOs but one of my recent ones was in Planetside 2.

My friend and I were at the bottom of a huge facility and was seeing if we can pick people off (she was a Sniper, I was supporting as Heavy Assault). We were hiding behind a small but decent pile of boulders, one of us on each side. One guy from another faction spotted my friend peeking out and started shooting at her. She said “Damn it someone’s onto me, he’s coming!”. Then I had my evil idea that I’m sure most people would have if you’re my class.

I told her to bait him to us. She took another shot and then started running towards my end of the boulders. As she ran past me, I took out my rocket launcher and waited… and waited… and waited. Suddenly an enemy light assault rushes in, gun blazing. I immediately shot a rocket to his face. Insta-death. My friend and I spent a good 3 minutes laughing at that moment.

The latest one was during a Heart of Fear raid.  During a boss fight, the tanks died, healers died, we were wiping it up.  Then the boss mind controlled our rogue, so I said what the hell.
I loaded the mine controlled rogue up with DOTS, curses and then feared him.   It became a race to see if the AI controlling him would clear the DOTS or would he die before the mind control broke.     The mind control broke, so it became a race between my DOTS and the boss on who would kill him first.  Warlocks RULE. DOTS for the win.

Well probably one of the funniest moments I can remember but back then would make me /ragequit because I didn’t know what was happening ! So I started playing WoW , and it was my first mmo and i didn’t know what was going on or what did I have to do! I remember I created a Night Elf Warrior, and as soon as I entered the world I just started running around, trying to understand how to play and I remember just trying to kill Boars and Nightsabers around the starting zone, but as I didn’t know what I was doing, I was always dying and rezzing at the graveyard , so I got that sickness thing and I went to kill some more and died over and over again ! Things is after a few days I actually managed to reach level 6 by just killing and getting killed. Fun to remember it now !

i don’t know if this is the funniest, but it is the most recent and, at the time, cracked everyone up in our group.  We were in a SWTOR flash point (the mando one can’t remember the name) fighting mobs on a catwalk and just as my merc kb’ed a mob off the catwalk our warrior force charged the same mob right off the damn thing, plummeting to their deaths!  it reminded me of the youtube reenactment of Obi Wan in Ep 1 force charging Darth Maul in their big finale.  definitely a “had to be there” moment, but it was hilarious at the time.

When my guild made it to Kologarn for the first time, we took a few minutes before engaging the boss to nail down our strategy. Once we had our strategy, our tank bolted in there Leeroy Jenkins style, and accidentally ran off the edge.

I’ll give you two. In Classic WoW days my guild was gathered up getting ready to pull Onyxia. For those unfamiliar, there is a ramp that leads into a large circular room, and there is a ring of eggs at the edge of this room. While gathered at the top of the ramp waiting for the ready check all of the sudden, with no warning, one of our healers jumps off the ramp and lands in the eggs and runs around in circles spawning dozens of Whelplings. Afterwards our paniced healer explains that she went to get a drink and her 4 year old son had started hitting buttons.

The second was preparing to fight Netherspite in Karazan in the Burning Crusade days. One of our staple players has always played a Demonology Warlock, his pet Flaroon is legendary. So here we are, hiding at the edge of the room getting read to pull and all of the sudden Flaroon takes off running at the boss. “Llag…where is Flaroon going? Llag?” … The friendly ventrillo lady informs us. “Llag has left the server.”

You know what they say, never work with Childern or Pets.

As a mage, I do recall hitting the button to give my self arcane brilliance and blinking 20 yards forward in the the waiting Boss…. Oops. Wrong button.

I have also run complete dungeons in my fishing hat. I have my hat hidden, so….

My MMO moment was hilarious (at least to my friends when I told them about it).

DAOC was my very first MMORPG. I chose to be an Enchanter starting in Hibernia. Within five minutes of playing the game I had a player “Kill Steal” from me not once but twice. After the first offense I politely asked the player to stop stealing my kills. No response. After the second offense I was less polite. Still, no response.

The player, in fact, seemed to have no purpose in life other than to sit around and steal other player’s kills. I watched him for 10 minutes or so and noticed that he wasn’t just stealing my kills but stealing the kills of every player near him. What a jerk!!!

It wasn’t until a full week later that I realized that the “Kill Stealer” was, in fact, an NPC.
