Blizzard Community Manager Draztal brings up some new plans for reputation and lesser charms

Blizzard CM Draztal posted some interesting new ideas today in response to the plentiful requests for new ways to earn reputation, and, to a lesser extent, lesser charms. Players have long been unhappy with the focus on daily quests in Mists of Pandaria, and Blizzard’s team have gone from a firm stance, to a bit of backpedaling, to a full on retreat on the matter.

Draztal’s post was as follows:

The developers are currently planning to include bonus reputation that can be earned via scenarios and dungeons. It doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be through tabards and in the exact same way as back in the days, but sounds close enough to what you want!

I really don’t want to do dailies for coins either, why can’t we just get them from HC’s as well?
Actually, not from heroics, but the developers are planning to let you have a chante to earn Lesser Charms of Good Fortune through Pet Battles. Basically, if you win, you’ll have a chance of receiving charms based on your pet level.

And if a player is below level 90, they’ll get experience equal to defeating a yellow creature.

The first half of Draztal’s post sounds great, any way to get bonus rep from dungeons or scenarios, be it a tabard or otherwise, will be a boon both to those who don’t care for dailies and those who do their dailies but just want some variety. It will also be a help for players gearing new characters via dungeons, as the additional rep gains will likely be enough to push relatively geared players back into the older content, which they might otherwise have eschewed in favor of the Raid Finder, or similar.

The second half of Draztal’s post, though, sounds utterly bizarre! Pet battles giving XP gains as a reward seems logical, and a bit of a fun way to level. Given that certain professions already award XP, it’s no surprise that pet battles might too. However, given that Blizzard had said from the out that pet battles were meant as a side game, the addition of something like lesser charms, which are used in raids to get extra rolls on loot, is strange at best!

Will this make players feel they have to add pet battles to their “things I should be doing” list?

The whole purpose of the lesser charms is to get greater charms, they don’t need to do anything else.

the quest gives you bonus rolls for raiding though

Are you saying you don’t raid?  If you don’t raid, the major charms are rather worthless.

I don’t think that it should be looked at as a mandatory thing to do to earn lesser charms…. Just another alternative to the options now. I think it’s a smart move as long as they don’t take away from the current other ways to earn them.

rather bet battle then daily quest any day

I think that if Blizz wanted to get more people doing pet battles this would be the way to do it. I can see people doing this along with daily’s to get more charms.  Unless you put a cap on how many you can get in a day this would happen.  But also would be back peddling to how many daily’s you can do.

Lesser charms for Pet Battles should be fine, they meet the design goal of getting players out into the world.

Add rep to heroic dungeon runs should work as well, I currently only run heroics when I need to cap my VP for the week.

Daily quests were such a chore.  I’m sure the people that still play that game will be pleased.

There are tons of raid groups going. Just everyone who is serious about raiding, already have over 500 lesser charms.  So this is really a non issue.

I figured Blizz would get the message eventually and realize they messed up by making MOP the daily quest expansion.  I gave up a while ago but I am sure half the community is cheering for this stuff.  Too late for some, but better late then never!

In my opinion, pet battles will absolutely not feel mandatory. I hate dailies with a passion at times, and have not even touched the pet battle system… not that I don’t want to… I just never seem to get around to it. But when you have a comment of  “you’ll have a chance of receiving charms based on your pet level.” I know I’m not going to progress my pets up to higher levels (25 I think is the highest pet level? correct me if I’m wrong) at a “chance” of lesser charms. I much rather deal with the stupid dailies and know that I -will- get my charms and get some money in the process as well. Now for the people that have an over abundance of charms, and don’t really care to do dailies for a while. The prospect of getting lesser charms is a nice little perk for doing the pet battles, nothing more.
