Time to take off the tin foil hats.

This morning, Mike B and I speculated that due to the amount of anticipated business the pre-order — or pre-purchase —  will generate for Guild Wars 2, the post April 10 betas would have to be open.

It seems that has been confirmed.

In an article by Forbes, Chris LyeArenaNet‘s global brand director — had the following to say about the beta weekends included in pre-orders:

“We expect the public weekend beta people to be some of our strongest evangelists,” said Lye. “They’ll be able to post screenshots, create blogs and create live streaming of the game to share with their friends and the overall community.”

This apparently establishes that the post-April 10 beta weekends will not be under NDA. If this is the case and not a misstatement, I think Guild Wars 2 just got a lot closer than we might have thought.

Putting the tin-foil hat back on for a mo: I think we might see launch by the end of May.

In addition the minimum computer specifications were released today:

Holy Cow I hope there rdy for this! I bet this game is rdy to come out at any time.

Methinks a June release date is not unreasonable.  Even if the PvE content isn’t perfectly polished, the fact is WvW is essentially a second MMO inside this MMO so we will have plenty to keep us occupied awaiting further patches.  Although I doubt this will be an issue, ArenaNet ALWAYS released complete games.

      • http://twitter.com/c3o5nnect J

Yup, the simple fact that ANet is making this game eases my mind.

After seeing the system requirements I deleted Halo 2, World of Warcraft, and Dragon’s Nest to get ready for GW2

I am currently petting my computer and making soothing, nurturing noises.
      Yes, I’m weird.

  • cthulutaur

good thing they specified i will need a keyboard and mouse to play which i nearly forgot about until they mentioned it

    • ScottHawkes

I laughed at that myself Cthulu, my hopes of playing with a track-ball are doomed. You know someone somewhere complained they didn’t know they needed a keyboard and mouse and tried to sue someone.

      • http://www.facebook.com/duanedkinney Duane David Kinney

Must have been an American… or a Pole.
P.S. (Yes, that was a sad reference to Polish jokes, not hate speech)

    • Old Ben

On the plus side, it seems that a monitor is not required, so you can really splash out on a good keyboard.

      • ScottHawkes

Now we know how to use that frame in the CE.

    TAKE MY MONEY.

Seriously though I can’t wait to play this game. I’ve been doing the RIFT trial of late and most of the people talking in general chat are like me and just playing RIFT waiting for GW2.

    • http://www.facebook.com/duanedkinney Duane David Kinney

How funny, I’m downloading Rift Lite now after seeing MikeB’s BFF report on it.  Again, just playing it while I wait for GW2, and hey, it’s easier on my computer and looks better (artwise) than WoW.

      • Roger McKay

I DLed Rift a few weeks ago, and have not been able to coax myself to play it. I found the leveling tedious, and I don’t think anything has been added in my character level range (about 17).

The only MMO I have done anything in recently is the F2P version of Fallen Earth, and that just for the crafting.

        • Chettra Heng

Well that sucks dude, because Rift is a good game. Too bad it didn’t work out for you.

          • JJGlyph

It’s a good game overall, but I agree with Roger. The leveling is boring and tedious.

  • http://twitter.com/Master10K Master10K

You do realize that the game has been in Closed Beta since December 2011 and they have always said that the feedback of the Closed Beta will determine when they’ll hold a more open beta and the feedback from that will determine the release date. So nothing has changed from what they initially said.

However there are things that have changed, in this post over on GW2guru that outlines the changes to the FAQ.

    • ScottHawkes

Thanks for the good points and the link M10K, when I was speaking of a more traditional beta roll out I was meaning over the next few months. Honestly, I’ll sleep then I’ll make more sense. Eventually.

OK so I had already put $20.00 down as a pre-order at the local Game Stop store this week. Do you think Game Stop will be one of the select retailers able to provide the open beta keys and the extra game goodies?

    • lee long

Dont buy from a store! remember Arena net told you get ONLY ONE day advance, not three! buy from arena net straight out, u will get 3 days

      • snikendelarveføtter

If i’m not mistaken, pre purchase gives you 3 days + the other goodies (depending on what package you pick) and pre order only gives you the 1 day headstart.

        • http://twitter.com/c3o5nnect J

This guy knows his stuff. I’d be surprised if you couldn’t pre-purchase from a retailer and still get in the betas.

    • JJGlyph

Get your money back if you can. Buying retail won’t get you into beta and you’ll get 1 day early access instead of 3 day.

  • snikendelarveføtter

Roger McKay will enter a ridiculous comment in 3….2…1

  • Roger McKay

A positive sign that ANet has confidence in their MMO.

Notice that GBTV is also calling open beta a marketing device? Just as I said earlier. I guess they are trolls, too?

    • http://www.facebook.com/jamiemccutchen1 Jamie McCutchen

      Nope, just you! ;)

    • http://casualdoes.wordpress.com/ Randomessa

End of March beta weekend = closed beta, under strict NDA, not for marketing purposes.

April beta weekends = open, not under NDA, strictly for marketing purposes.

      • http://twitter.com/c3o5nnect J

Also server stress testing… Only good marketing if the game is actually good. I agree with Roger for once on them being confident is a good sign.

    • JJGlyph

I fail to see why marketing is bad. Every company in the world has to have it to succeed. I think you haved a warped sense of reality.

  • http://twitter.com/DaPhoolz Rp TheFoolz

If “everyone” pre-order the game then a release date is almost useless. xD

    • Jeffrey _

       Lol.

    • JJGlyph

I don’t see why? The beta events are only 2 or 3 days long. That’s why they are call Beta Weekend ;) People who pre-purchase don’t automatically get into the ongoing closed beta.

  • Sharuko

Wonder if GW2 will be NCSoft’s biggest success since Aion.

    • http://twitter.com/c3o5nnect J

Wouldn’t doubt it… The real question is, how long will it take to pass the 7 million sale mark that GW1 did for ArenaNet.

      • http://twitter.com/Master10K Master10K

I think ArenaNet/NCSoft will be able to reach the 7 mill sales mark by the time the first expansion comes, because this is the kind of game that would prosper due to word of mouth.

        • http://twitter.com/c3o5nnect J

Word of mouth is definitely a powerful sales tool… ArenaNet has to strike when the fire is hot though, because eventually people get tired of talking. I think the game will deliver, the only question is, when? :(

        • http://twitter.com/JadoCast Jado Cast

I know people who don’t play mmo’s that have expressed a lot of interest in GW2.  Wouldn’t surprise me if it breaks $7 million.

      • Sharuko

GW1 had impressive sales numbers.  But the sales numbers represents 5 different game/campaign/expansions.

        • http://profile.yahoo.com/WTXIN3D4TLTPYC2LDB5QG5QJVA Graham

i believe they were expecting to sell 100,000 units of the first campaign and sold well over a million. and there are 3 campaigns and one expansion.

  • http://twitter.com/hemmer10 hemmer

Let others do the marketing! Very efficient.
This also seems to be a very popular model lately…B2B – Buy 2 Beta

  • Daniel Stenson

Very unlikely that the game will launch in May after this recent annoucement.

“When do Beta Weekend Events (BWEs) start, and how many will there be?
The first BWE is currently planned for late April, and we expect to have one every month or so.” – :(~ Guild Wars 2 Insider

    • ScottHawkes

Thanks Daniel, it’s true that makes it less likely, but they also state they don’t know how many they will do. If not may I’ll be extremely surprised if it goes live later than June.

      • Daniel Stenson

I hope your right Scott.  I swear it’s getting harder to sit by patiently waiting on a game that looks superior in almost every way to any in the genre ATM.

BTW you guys have done a fantastic job with the new website and haven’t failed to impress with the volume of quality content you roll out on a hourly/daily basis.  Some of us here in N.Ireland are following Gamebreaker religiously. Keep up the good work!!

        • ScottHawkes

Thanks very much Daniel, we all appreciate the sentiment.

  • http://twitter.com/KallyXo Kallyx

    updated faq :
When do Beta Weekend Events (BWEs) start, and how many will there be?
The first BWE is currently planned for late April, and we expect to have one every month or so. The schedule is subject to change and will be confirmed at a later date. Currently, we do not know how many of these events we will have.
Doesn’t sound like a May release to me

    • ScottHawkes

Indeed Kallyx, it makes it much less likely in light of that new FAQ change. It does leave a lot of back doors in the same statement though.

  • Verus

My guess is the game will be out in sep/oct and better they take the proper time to test it.

As for this being an open beta it is another case of pre-order to get beta access something that is very common now with mmo games.

  • http://twitter.com/outlawhawk OutlawHawk

will we be able to keep our characters from the beta or they are going to wipe before/after release?

  • Theyrealone

Hey arena net you cannot release gw2 at the end of may it’s diablo time!

  • Revanhavoc

That pot on the head of Mike S suits him so well, he is practically like R2-D2 now!
