My FFXIV Closed Beta “Tell All” In Wall Of Text Form!

PLEASE NOTE: While the Press Embargo may have been lifted on FFXIV Closed Beta Phases 1 and 2, The NDA is still in full effect until Square Enix decrees otherwise. Please refrain from making NDA breaking comments below. If you have a question ask it below and I will answer it to the best of my ability! Let the text wall begin! :) [Editors note: all NDA breaking comments will be deleted.]

It’s no secret that I have been looking forward to Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (FFXIV) for a while now. Whether it has been in comments on previous articles or on our very own forums I’ve shared with you my hope for the relaunch of Square Enix‘s MMORPG, but I’ve also shared many of your “cautious” optimism outlooks as well. Quite frankly, being a Final Fantasy “fan boy” to a degree, I felt badly burnt by the version 1.0 launch and was determined to look at Version 2.0 through both the eyes of a gamer and the eyes of a skeptic.

Could Square Enix actually pull off a revamp to this degree? Could FFXIV turn into a game that could be played AND enjoyed? After multiple weekends playing the game  I am here to tell you that many of my questions have answers now, and I am here to share them with you.

In the most recent beta weekends, we’ve had access to all 5 races in FFXIV. Each race has 2 affiliations to choose from which basically changes your appearance and heritage. While customization did not include the level of “slider” action available in some other MMORPGs, the sheer number of options available for you to choose from makes duplicate characters unlikely. Yes, choices on appearance were make from lists of preset images, but there were so many decisions to make that most gamers will find a style that suits them without feeling generic. We did have access to the full calendar for birth dates and all patron deities to choose from, but our initial class selection was limited to Archer, Lancer, or Conjurer. I chose Archer to start with (although I did play MANY other classes along the way) and opted to play most of the time with the gamepad functionality that was enabled in FFXIV closed beta phase 2. More about that later though.

As in Final Fantasy tradition, after creation we are treated to a rather lengthy cut scene on our way to Gridania. This city was our home for each beta weekend as the main story line quests stopped at level 15 since they involve travel to other cities via airship and we weren’t allowed to fly just yet. It is at this point that questions start to get answered.

Graphics and Overall Performance

Graphically the game is as impressive as it ever was. Most people thought that game looked beautiful in version 1.0 but took issue with decent performance being reserved for higher end machines. That isn’t the case in the FFXIV closed beta. The world was beautiful on multiple different setting options and ran almost flawlessly on my system and my wife’s system (which is not a gaming rig by any stretch but did OK on the previously released benchmark.) In short, if you ran the benchmark OK, you shouldn’t have to much of an issue with performance in game. The shifting of graphic power to the server side has certainly helped, and I couldn’t find and copy/pasted landscapes in my FFXIV closed beta travels.

In all honesty, the only graphical or performance glitch I ever encountered was this odd blacking out of my screen if I alt tabbed out and came back. It didn’t happen every time but coming back in and seeing my UI but nothing else usually meant a restart was in order. No complaints otherwise and I’m sure that’s something that will be addressed.

First Impressions On Gameplay And Questing

HOLY HELL I CAN JUMP! I know most of you already knew this from seeing in game video from Yoshi-P, but during the FFXIV closed beta, I really tried to test the limits of jumping to see if it was a lazy tack-on or if it actually worked. Real short version, it works like it should. Jumping over fences and the like was no issue and it felt just fine.

You also probably noticed the totally revamped UI. This was perhaps the thing I was worried about the most. While I had no doubt the hot bars would function well using a keyboard and mouse or a gamepad, I was unsure how the rest of the menus and targeting would fare. The version 1.0 menu nightmare was scary. The FFXIV closed beta played fine with a mouse and keyboard but believe it or not I actually played almost 100% of the beta with a gamepad on my PC. I literally only used the keyboard to chat.

I picked up the ENTIRE gamepad scheme in about a half hour. I mean the ENTIRE scheme (menus and all), and I wasn’t sitting there trying to learn it, I figured it all out through actual gameplay and the on screen tool tips to guide you the first time you come in contact with a new system. I am actually SHOCKED at how well this worked with a gamepad and will probably play with one at launch because of it. If I had to give you a negative on the gamepad I guess I could say that targeting takes a second to get used to but even then you have so many options for mapping that it really was never a big deal.

Gamepad sum up: I LOVE the gamepad play but targeting can get challenging in FATE (more on those later) events when there are 30 people doing one event with 15 monsters nearby. Other than FATE I generally had no issues. I’ll be interested to see the gamepad in action in 8 man groups since I didn’t get any of that action in the FFXIV closed beta.

Questing is pretty standard. I wish I had other news for you on this front. Quests are typical “kill X” quests, “fetch this” quests and the like. The interface is much improved and adopts the time tested “!” and “?” system. Targets are not pinpointed for you, but a general area is usually displayed on your map for you. Questing felt fluid, I liked the main story line (as much of it as we could see), and I had fun but there isn’t anything earth shattering about the questing system.

One note here, I don’t mind a quest grind so I enjoyed the system, BUT from my time in the FFXIV closed beta I can tell you that if you do not like quest grinding FFXIV probably is not the game for you. Yes there are other ways to gain experience of course but if you are looking at leveling multiple jobs on your character eventually you will break down and have to start completing levequests (basically repeatable quests that are class specific for alternate class leveling) and complete hunting, gathering, or crafting logs (random experience rewards for making certain things or killing certain targets as a certain class) if you want to level in any reasonable amount of time.

The exception to this is the Fully Active Time Event (FATE) system. Similar to events in Guild Wars 2, these events appear randomly on almost any zone map and all you have to do to join in the fun is walk into the area marked on your map. These were usually pretty fun and involved swarms of monsters, large bosses, and even a few odd tasks in the FFXIV closed beta. Yoshi-P has said that these events are triggered by many things including a zone’s population and I have to think he was telling the truth. While fun and experience heavy, I do hope they make one improvement before launch. When a FATE event popped up on your map you could hover over it and see the task at hand. I would like to see a completion percentage displayed too. Nothing sucked more than trekking across the map to a FATE to have it end just as I got there. Just a small gripe and something I can live with if they don’t add it though.

Combat, Abilities, And the Global Cooldown

If you’ve stuck with me this long you’re either a FFXIV fan like myself, or you’re still trying to decide if you are willing to give FFXIV a second chance. Here’s where some of you may drop off on me. No, the combat in the FFXIV closed beta was not “action” combat like a title such as Tera includes. Yes, at its core it is a tab targeting system. Having said that though, the combat is a LOT faster than version 1.0 and it doesn’t involve absurd menus and 3 second delays on casting. Depending on your class you may be able to move while casting abilities but true casting classes must remain still while casting spells that have a casting time on them.

Being that I still enjoy other tab targeting games, I enjoyed the combat in the FFXIV closed beta. I am not going to hype it up as the most fun thing on the planet, but it felt good and it is the way it SHOULD have been in version 1.0. Abilities are learned as soon as you level and are automatically added to your hot bar for you but you can swap things around if you like.

My biggest concern with combat was the Global Cooldown (GCD) going into the FFXIV closed beta. Between Alpha and Beta the GCD was reduced by 0.5 seconds and while this certainly makes combat FEEL faster, I still had doubts on if having every ability tied to the GCD can work. I wish I could say those questions are totally answered, but they aren’t. At lower levels you start to realize that simply spamming your most powerful ability over and over again is a perfectly viable option for most occasions. When running my first dungeon I did start to see that sometimes this “spam” tactic fails as you burn through TP (TacticalPoints, used for some class’s abilities) or MP too fast to keep up. I hope this trend continues otherwise every Archer will just spam Heavy Shot over and over again and other classes will follow suit.

I hope the TP/MP burn makes this tactic less viable in even higher levels but I still have concerns that I look forward to testing at higher levels soon. I was encouraged by the fact that the first dungeon’s main boss caused my Archer to run low on TP while the boss was still at 20% health. The jury is still out on the GCD in my book, but I am at least optimistic now.

Running Dat Dungeon

While the FFXIV closed beta did not include a dungeon queue system, there is a search option for you to find other players that are looking for a party. If the other players are smart, they may add in the comments on their “Looking for Party” profile what they would like to do. If you played FFXI you’ll know what I mean when I say it is a “put your flag up” system. I found 3 people to run the first dungeon within 5 minutes but, yes, we had to walk there. :)

The first dungeon on the Gridania side of Eorzea is the Tam-Tara Deepcroft. In the FFXIV closed beta, and likely in the full release, you needed to be level 15 to access the dungeon and a party of 4 was required. My Archer tackled this instance with a level appropriate group with 1 tank, 2 dps, and 1 healer/dps.

The dungeon was a large circular chamber with catacomb tunnels all over the side chambers. You can see this dungeon and boss teased in the benchmark test. At this point my Archer did have 1 semi-crowd control ability (a 10 second Bind) so my role became one of binding any unexpected adds while burning the tank’s target. We made our way through multiple passages to 3 different altars. At each altar we broke an orb and this culminated in a bridge to the center of the circular chamber opening up and allowing us access to the final boss.

Along the way, we fought standard packs of trash and some mini bosses. We scavenged for treasure ( I won NOTHING…damn you /roll), had a run in with a bad pull that wiped our Conjurer, and generally had a good time. Dungeons are timed in FFXIV and we had one hour to complete this run but “speed run” bonus rewards that made pugging in version 1.0 difficult have since been removed from version 2.0.

The final boss was a tank and spank affair where at every 25% adds would appear to shield the boss and attack us. Burn the adds, back to boss, rinse and repeat. While we did down the final boss on our first try, I’ll be honest and tell you that it was a close call. As mentioned before I wanted to see if spamming one ability caused issues and it was nice to see that it did towards the end of the fight.

In the FFXIV closed beta, if you had any time left from your one hour, you were free to explore other parts of the dungeon you may have skipped earlier, we did so, grabbed a few treasures, and then got ported out when our timer expired.

I had a blast in this initial run. Yes, I know that the instance wasn’t anything new and earth shattering in the MMO world, but it was fun at least. Something that very few people said about the initial launch.

Crafting and Gathering

During my few weekends in the FFXIV closed beta so far I’ve managed to get one character leveled in Archer, Conjurer, Gladiator (ok that one was a feebie when you finished your level 10 initial class quest), Carpenter, and Botanist classes.

Crafting is a tad on the unique side actually and as long as Yoshi-P can make crafting an important and viable part of FFXIV‘s economy, I am sure there will be linkshells (FFXIV guilds) dedicated to crafting.

Remember, in FFXIV you can switch classes on your character simply by switching the weapon or item in their hand. Equip a saw and BOOM you’re a level one Carpenter.

Don’t worry about bag space for all those sets of gear (at least initially). In the FFXIV closed beta we had 6 Gear Sets we could equip and switch between them on the fly. If you put a piece of gear in one of the sets it doesn’t take up bag space anymore, even if you don’t have that particular set equipped. (Nice touch Yoshi-P and team!)

Crafting follows a familiar formula but adds in a lot of tweeks. For example, as a Carpenter you have a set list of possible items you can craft at certain levels. You gather the materials needed and you click “Craft”, but that’s just where it starts. You see, your Carpenter has abilities just like a combat class would and you gain new abilities as you level. These abilities require CP (Crafting Points) that work just like TP and MP. You have to pay attention to what you’re crafting, use abilities well to help ensure success and even improve the quality of items you create, and yes…you can fail at crafting and lose materials.

Just like Disciples of War and Magic, crafting classes have their own “story” line quests every 5 levels and you can use your crafting levequests and your “Logs” to gain experience for your crafting classes.

Gathering classes are very similar to crafting classes. You have quests to gather certain items, can repeat levequests that are gathering class specific, or gather items in your gathering log for additional experience. You have certain gathering abilities (that use Gathering Points or GP) that must be used well to ensure success and it felt VERY gratifying to me to actually FAIL gathering levequests. The system didn’t feel like it was “giving” me anything and I had to participate intelligently to make sure I hit my marks.

All in all, this may have been my favorite part of the FFXIV closed beta! I actually LOVED the gathering and crafting classes I played and didn’t feel like I was leveling some random ability by spam creating. I felt engaged in both types of classes and the FFXIV closed beta had me starting to think about which order I would be leveling things come launch time.

Magicman’s Final Thoughts

I went into the FFXIV closed beta with an open mind. I found myself very pleased with certain things but then quickly reminded myself that “That really should have been there since the first launch.”

After playing for a good bit of time, if you asked me if I thought FFXIV was going to blow the doors off of the MMO world I would tell you honestly, no, it will not. BUT, the version 2.0 relaunch is shaping up to be at the very least on par with other triple A MMO titles out there. Will there be debate of “Feature A” and if some other game does it better? Of course, but at least there will be debate now where version 1.0 drew nothing but ire from most gamers.

The other main topic of controversy is the subscription requirement. Many feel that it isn’t warranted, and I can see where they are coming from, but after getting hands on time I feel comfortable paying my monthly sub to play. The only question on my mind now is how long I’ll pay. Will the content be enough to keep me engaged for a long period of time? I certainly hope so. My time in the FFXIV closed beta leads me to think A Realm Reborn may be the Final Fantasy MMO many were hoping for years ago.

Will it draw FFXI players away? I don’t think so. The thing with FFXIV is that I only partied to run a dungeon. The rest of my leveling for all classes was solo and my Archer was almost level 30. I think hardcore FFXI players like the party dependency and I just don’t know if FFXIV will have that at higher levels, we’ll have to wait and see.

I still have questions about FFXIV but now they are questions of how WELL something is implemented and what Yoshi-P and team can do in the future to make some current systems genre changing systems.

So far, the FFXIV closed beta has left me wanting to play more each weekend the betas end and that’s a great mark of improvement in my book.

If you flat out hate the game and aren’t interested in giving Square Enix a second chance, I can understand that but if you’re a fan or even a “maybe gonna try it” player I cannot urge you enough to try and get into the future FFXIV closed beta and the upcoming open beta. You’ll know in a few hours if you’re willing to pay or not. With no free trial for NEW players, it may be the only chance you get without having to pay.

Quite simply there is SO much more I want to test out and jump into for FFXIV but I have enjoyed every minute so far.

To Yoshi-P and team, well done so far. You’ve certainly earned at least a chance in my book. It isn’t all roses though, there’s still work to be done and questions to answer. You 100% have my subscription at launch, but with other AAA titles on the horizon, what do you plan to do to KEEP my sub? While FFXIV is fun, it isn’t groundbreaking (yet) so I certainly look forward to seeing what the future has in store, even if it is still shrouded in a little bit of mystery.

If you have questions feel free to post them below and I will answer them if I can and enjoy this gallery of images you may not have seen yet! :)

TL:DR – Nothing groundbreaking yet, but certainly fun and worth a look by even the most jaded FFXIV player. Brings FFXIV at least on par with most MMOs out now. A bit of everything Final Fantasy fans want to see, but maybe lacking a bit on the “party” side of business…we shall see.

I hope you guys start doing the XIV podcast again, I loved that show!

    • http://twitter.com/Tidonius Tidonius

The XIV podcast was how I found out about Gamebreaker. Bring back Kenzie!

      • http://twitter.com/DanforthWright Danforth Wright

Same for me, I hope the disappointment of 1.0 can be overcome in time for the launch of ARR. I wouldn’t have ever found GBTV without that podcast.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=731108011 Andrew June

I have thoroughly enjoyed ARR beta but haven’t played a ton because I want a semi fresh retail start. I agree with everything in this post.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rasmus.nielsen.75491 Rasmus Nielsen

Will be interesting to see someone who’s not a Fan’s take on the game, who wont accept the huge flaws in gameplay due to loving FF

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Byrne/100001642673542 Michael Byrne

Curious why you feel I looked past flaws. Basically said that combat is standard, questing is standard and the game doesn’t do anything groundbreaking yet. Basically besides really liking the crafting I summed it up by saying it was fun, but standard and there are still questions on long term success. Can you tell me what I could have done to me more unbiased so far? Thanks friend!

      • http://twitter.com/Thaguf Thaguf

It was a good article, some people will always be overly skeptical of everything you say.

        • http://www.facebook.com/rasmus.nielsen.75491 Rasmus Nielsen

The problem I have is that I’m not Skeptical, I simply disagree and feel that he is letting his love of Final Fantasy (and wish for FFXIV to succeed, which I agree with and hope for) getting in the way of his objectivity, so shouldn’t pretend that he isn’t, or can possibly be unbiased.

I do not think that that’s a bad thing, the game needs people who are excited about the game, as an aside.

But simply put, the game can only get an unbiased review from someone who didn’t play 1.0, or who didn’t play Final Fantasy XI, or has a great love for the genre simply because it’s FF (someone who dislikes FF either, would have a hard time too, for that matter)

          • http://twitter.com/Thaguf Thaguf

I understand you a bit better after reading the comment. I agree that more people should do articles that are unbiased on this title. But their is one problem….its still FF and most people who write gaming articles have at least one or two favorite games in this series.

Unless you get a writer who does action or sport games only you wont get a totally unbiased review. But that would be unfair as these folks have no interest in this genre.

          • http://twitter.com/DanforthWright Danforth Wright

Seeking unbiased review from the Video Game Review industry… good luck with that one pal.

      • http://www.facebook.com/rasmus.nielsen.75491 Rasmus Nielsen

I’d give you an indepth answer, but I can’t. However, suffice it to say, combat is not standard, by any western or current generation tab combat MMO. It might be standard by Asian/FFXI standards, but it’s only standard, in the sense that it is slow, unresponsive and clunky combat, that belongs to an MMO released a decade ago. You also overlook the simple fact, that they aren’t *standard* they’re standard compared to 1.0, which they albeit are a *huge* improvement over. But, in every way that matters (Dialogue, Story, Combat, even fluidity of animations) They’re simply not up to par for a triple A release, despite what you might say, due to what is obviously a love for the series and genre and in comparison to 1.0 *anything* is superior,

Interesting input! Thanks for the reply! :)

          • http://www.facebook.com/rasmus.nielsen.75491 Rasmus Nielsen

I wish I could say more, because I do agree on some points. And it *is* an improvement over 1.0 *no doubt* I don’t think the article is bad as an aside at all, enjoyed the read.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Byrne/100001642673542 Michael Byrne

I’m not sure I follow. I found the combat to be extremely similar to both WoW and SWTOR. I suppose the term “Standard” will depend on the individual.

    • LusitanGaming

i cant reply to this without breaking NDA, but its an average MMO, that will only please true FF fanatics

      • http://twitter.com/Thaguf Thaguf

All in all an mmo is an mmo most are alike these days. And you have to admit that most people who will be playing this will be FF fans. This game does have that great FF feel that many fans want. I somewhat agree with you however that being said even in beta its already more entertaining than playing WOW or Rift.

      • http://twitter.com/DanforthWright Danforth Wright

Yes. Only to us true FF fans, the millions and millions of FF fans all over the world… what a shame.

      • Ravenia Darkfae

i’m not a final fantasy fan and i like it. care to say more?

    • theunwarshed

i’m not a fan of the game and for what it’s worth i don’t feel the author was necessarily biased, but perhaps a little soft on the game review. i agree that the game feels “standard” for an mmo of about 5+ years ago (with updated graphics) and therein lies the problem for FFXIV.

there are always going to be a few holdouts that love the so called “strategic combat” mechanics og bygone mmo, and there will of course be the FF FB/FG that will love this game, but it won’t appeal to the mainstream.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Byrne/100001642673542 Michael Byrne

Totally fair comment, I’ll chalk part of the soft up to access being limited both in scope and time. Yes I like FF, but quite honestly I like good games more, as I said, I’ll sub to check it all out at launch so far it is at least worth that in depth check to me, but how long I’ll stay subbed is still up for debate. :) Nice Comment!

    • Ravenia Darkfae

i’m not a final fantasy fan, and I think this game is good from what i’ve seen with the gloal cooldowns, its either 3 sec wait, or 5 sec wait per skill. I rather take the gcd over spam fest that lag up games. And it was stated there will be gear and skills that decrese the cool down.

I had a character I played for about 2 months in XIV. I applied for the ARR beta as soon as it was available.
My buddy applied for it about 2 months afterwards and never played XIV.
He’s already been invited, I’ve yet to. I’m a sad Lalafel.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jason.harrigan.92 Jason Harrigan

When I tried FF 1.0 you did one quest at a time. You couldn’t pick up a bunch of quests, go do them all and come back to turn them in. Is it still one quest at a time or can you actually do multiple quests at once?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Byrne/100001642673542 Michael Byrne

You can do multiple quests at once, familiar quest tracking system on the right of the UI by default. :)

  • Mike

For this game, will the quest be “Dialog”-based (And hopefully, cutscene-based for the main questline), or will it just throw at us a Wall of text with an Accept button?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Byrne/100001642673542 Michael Byrne

Main stories were a mix of text and cutscenes (many edited to hide “spoilers”). Normal quests are “dialogue” in the respect that the NPCs talk in chat bubble, but so far there have been very few “choices” for your character replying to NPCs and the like.

      • GamerEnvy

As long as Hildebrand is still there, then I say let the cut scenes and dialogue continue !!!

      • Ravenia Darkfae

thats was a like and hated thing in swtor… not really for mmo imo as it don;t fit the multiplayer aspect more so if your ina party which can slow progression.

    • LusitanGaming

there’s a wall of text you need to go (in form of the old RPG layouts), before you can finally accept the quest, one of the many annoyances about this game. spamming left click will make it go faster but you still have to endure all the text first

  • http://twitter.com/Thaguf Thaguf

“At lower levels you start to realize that simply spamming your most
powerful ability over and over again is a perfectly viable option for
most occasions.” Your playing wrong if you do this! Every class has combos that if you notice does more dps than normal spamming of a single skill. You can combo 2 skills together at low level to cause a higher dps output and if you notice when you hit a skill if it is able to combo with another skill it will light up. (unless you mess up then it wont light up meaning you botched the combo) :)

Spamming might work until lvl 8 or 9 tho not past lvl 10 you will die alot.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Byrne/100001642673542 Michael Byrne

You are 100% correct my friend, but when they don’t proc to combo (most are chance based not skill or timing based) you end up using one ability. Also at low levels you flat out don’t HAVE a ton of abilities obviously :)

      • Nodame

Actually it depends on the class right now.
Archer doesn’t have any combo but the class will be remade from scratch anyway, right now ARC gameplay is dropping DoTs and spamming one or two actions.
Conjurer doesn’t have combo either and makes fighting as a caster rather boring. DoT with aero, spam stone until stuff dies.

But both as LNC or GLD, you’ve got to use your combos. You’ve got them and they’re doing decent damage. :)

        …….

i bored myself until i decided to uninstall the client, it as great graphics and the engine runs really smooth, but the game overall its not worth a second change in my eyes

        • http://twitter.com/Thaguf Thaguf

Why would you use a macro for battle skills….that makes any game instantly less appealing.

I love Final Fantasy series up to FF 10. However, I always wanted to play the FF MMOs but they always lacked a variety of playable races and the fact after a complete make over, they didn’t even bother to make different races to make a fresh start or add more to the list.

I will always love the class/job systems they included in example “Final Fantasy Tactics” and “FFIV” and “FFV” however to me, the new thing among many other gamers that beg on MMOs is go beyond the classic human race or small looking human race creatures.

FF Universe has tons of magical creatures they can use but refuse to make it reality and still uses the same boring Human or Elf looking races.

I am happy they are going to re-launch this MMO, but graphics alone will not convince me to buy this game. A real shame.

plan is to add more races in expacs and the races are meant to mimic ffxi so players from that game can recreacte their ffxi character in ffxiv.

  • Bread256

I really loved playing FFXI years back with a few RL friends of mine, and what engaged me the most was the challenge the game presented (despite being very grindy), the environments, art style and music, and the unique class system. However, FFXIV has not really appealed to me thus far, as most of what I enjoyed so much about XI is missing and made to fit more of the standard MMO mold, aside from perhaps the unique class system. I do look forward to reading more on the game in the coming months, and I would love for this game to have a successful relaunch as it could serve to help diversify the current market somewhat.

  • Gavin Vengeance

Very well written article, and hit pretty much every point dead on. With that said however, there are a few things to point out.

First off, as stated The current beta is only taking place in one region of Eorzea, so it may feel hard to level additional jobs once you have completed the available quests. But more quests will be implemented by launch and also 2 other major regions will be available come phase 3 (according to the roadmap). With that said, additional jobs will be easy to level and you will have many more options available to you for levelling with the addition of guildhests and various other FATE’s.

Secondly, Beta so far has been more steered towards core mechanics, stress testing, low level raids, gamepad testing and FATE testing. By launch, PvP, high level raids/dungeons, Hamlet defense, Primal battles, additional jobs, etc. will be implemented. Also with things like the Gold Saucer, Chocobo Raising/Breeding, Chocobo Companions and more, there doesn’t seem to be a shortage of content on the horizon.

Thirdly, The game doesn’t do much to make it “The next best MMO” as said above. But for all those asking what makes this MMO unique, the answer is quite obvious. It’s a Final Fantasy MMO. If you don’t know what that means, then you really should give it a shot to determine if it’s to your liking. The game will be available to you at Open Beta anyway, so it won’t hurt to give it a shot.

Also, Thanks Magickmann to GBTV for the coverage! Top-notch as always, keep up the great work :)

This preview/impression is the most biases thing about this game I have yet to read. Since the NDA is still in effect I can’t talk about it, But all I want to say is they have a long way to go for this game to appeal to more players other than the small amount of FF11 and FF Fan Boys in general. An seeing that making a niche game that is only going to get maybe 250,000 players is never going to make this game and Enix any money. If things don’t change a lot, this game is going to have just about the same life span of the first version.

    • http://twitter.com/Picoman Picoman

250k subs is still 37.5mil per month and 450mil per year, if it lasts as long as XI thats nearly 5 BILLIONS.
Anyway, he mentioned XI players may not like the hand-holding and difficulty although, experiencing the end-game Yoshi-P added between 1.18 and 1.23 they should definitely check it out.

      • http://www.facebook.com/hkharpster Kyle Harpster

Oh no, I’m not talking about XI, I was referring to the First launch of XIV. In my opinion having repeat quests as the only way to level other jobs but your main. And even the normal quests seem to only amount to kills X of X creature. An dear lord the combat, the impression in the article is sugar coating it, It is horrific to put it mildly.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Byrne/100001642673542 Michael Byrne

Hmm, so saying exactly what you said (quests are kill X of X and combat is typical with questions still outstanding) is sugar coating? To each his own I guess :) Thanks for the feedback though!

          • http://www.facebook.com/hkharpster Kyle Harpster

A bit confused. The article is not really saying what the problems are with the combat with is much more the the global cooldowns. The question is will the dev team take the feedback from any other players but fan boys and make the complete overhaul that is needed to get the combat to a place that appeals to more than just these fan boys. Yes the combat is faster, but there are so many other problems then just the speed. Which is never talked about. It seems like the articles writer either can’t see these problems, doesn’t want to see them or to talk about the game at all can only say good things about the game and sugar coat the bad to make it seem like there is nothing wrong with the game but small issues. Which is not the case at all.

Sad thing is that you will be the one spending money on a game that will maybe only have a year life spend at the most, cause you (fanboy) are content with blindly giving money and not having your own opinion and vocalizing it. This game needs more of an audience that is not players that played 1.0/fanboys, and its just not going to be getting them with what is in the game now. Maybe 10 even 5 years ago but not now.

I played the CB as well buddy and i wont argue with the article he clearly has his own way of seeing things, as do you. But unlike him you have not even tried the game so please stop pretending like you actually have… those of us who were lucky enough to join the beta events since we unlike some supported the game through its tough times, we got to try everything first. And what that means is the game is not released yet so all the comments this article makes on anything related to combat and quests and whatnot, are a waste of time because the release build is not the same as the beta one, i would know this because some of us have people who actually work as game testers, and even if it does come out in that state do you not believe that they can add more complicated and fun to do than kill x quests in an update like every other ********* game has done so far? seriously quit bashing on a game you haven’t even tried it really is why i’m glad they put a sub as high as 13$ hopefully it keeps trash out for good.

    • Eagleeye595 .

rofl 250.000? hahaha do you even have any idea how many people still played that broken failure called 14? omg i’l stop here before i catch whatever it is you have and i’ll start thinking ff fan boys amass to 250k… try 2.5mil subs within the first month…. then watch it steal 50% of 11 easy.

The general consensus from my friends in beta is that XIV and SE has finally caught up to MMO’s from 2 years ago. I’m sure everyone understand why that’s good and bad.

Talk about nailing the head on the coffin .. lol.

    • http://twitter.com/DanforthWright Danforth Wright

This is a solid point. And if 1.0 was mediocre, as opposed to terrible, it probably never would have shut down. If ARR is nothing more than par, I won’t hesitate to make it my game of choice for years to come.

  • http://www.facebook.com/mmo.unfo Mmo Unfo

Nice write up. I will say that I agree with many of the comments here that this game is NOT on par with traditional tab target MMOs. I think this comes due to the identity crisis the devs have had while making this game. Part of the design choices were based off of XI’s combat while another part is trying to be more modern tab targeting design. The conflict has left us with a combat system that feels very awkward and out of place.

I do agree that the crafting and gathering are incredibly fun. However, this game’s identity crisis is again ruining even this system. Players are able to get everything they need from the massive amounts of quests as well as the dungeons. They made these Disciples of Hand and Land classes with the thought of them being the major suppliers of gear while leveling only to change that with ARR’s questing for gear. Now the crafters are left wondering why they are even here. The only need for crafting would be the materia system which we don’t know too much about yet.

I also want the best for this game, but I fear the lack of direction will kill this game worse than anything else.

    • Ravenia Darkfae

hmm i think ur basing this off outdated info, as yoshida said crafters fill in the gaps between looted gear. Plus you got player/freecompany housing which has alot of crafting elements. And everyone i know and all these first impressions say the combat is on par. It is also only beta, more ment for stress testing the real meat is phase 3. plus they haven’t added limit breaks yet. And neither Battle systems in 1.0 or what i have seen in ffxiv alpha footage is anything like ffxi.

    • Eagleeye595 .

You clearly didn’t do any crafting in 14 then… i did crafting and only crafting when i played the game.. i was the highest level LW in the entire server the name was Bombshell fyi. I was as rich as it gets even though i couldn’t do a damn thing with the money, however the crafted gear i made destroyed every single piece of armor anyone on the server had acquired elsewhere through whatever means. So please do not talk about crafting being out of place and not needed when you clearly do not know that crafting is going to make 14 go around.

  • GamerEnvy

After reading the article and catching up to the comments mentioned I can add:
1.) In my opinion, there is no better reviewer for this game than that of a player from version 1 for the simple reason that the game is a “RE-LAUNCH”. As easy as it can be for a reviewer (also a big fan of the IP) who could get lost in their own biased statements, keep in mind that the main audience SE is targeting are the people who had been loyal to XIV since launch. All the producer’s letters have had Yoshi P. address it. “Thank you for staying with us … we ask for your patience .. etc.” With MY OPINION stated, this is one of those rare occasions where comparisons CAN be made and explained as to how the game is now better for its core audience.
Would it be great to appeal to other gamers who rage quit early in the life of XIV?! Of course! It’s more possible concurrent revenue.

2.) Agree to disagree. To say that a reviewer “CAN’T” accept the huge flaws with in the game simply because they’re a fan and yet not even explain your reasoning? I’m appalled that I’m really even entertaining this but seriously? If you can’t even manage to continue a rational conversation, then what gives you the right to judge them as the reviewer.

3.) Again I’ll state this. If you don’t like the game, that’s great … different strokes different folks. Seeing as the author took the time to break down “THEIR” experience, how about respecting said authors and comment something worth commenting instead of trolling.

Fair enough. I thank you for not breaking it as a Beta Tester. I know how hard it can be not being able to talk about something when you have information to share. In this particular situation then, please forgive my rather brash sounding comment. I will admit I was a bit angered by your comments upon initial reaction and passed it off as something along the lines of trolling.

  • Fiji

The quests aren’t standard. In WoW, I can control a turret and kill off waves of mobs. I can ride around a huge robot and get new super-powered town-killing abilities to play with. I can control a goblin airplane and go on bombing runs. I get to take control of a character and play as a sniper. There’s a quest that involves solving two simple logic puzzles. There are a ton of other examples. Literally every quest in XIV is a straight up kill or fetch quest. Even F.A.T.E. is nothing but mindless killing.

The graphics are technically a downgrade from 1.0, but the new art more than makes up for it.

This game works like an actual MMO now, which is saying a lot considering the horrible state 1.0 was in, but it is nothing special. Basically SE caught up to four years ago in terms of design.

    • Random323452345

Its in beta, there not gonna include all the awesome quests right off the bat… i mean did you ever play vanilla WoW? WoW had like nothing, and those quests what level were you? How far along w/e story line was it? Not trying to like white knight or anything, just saying if your going to compare something at least do it properly.

      • http://twitter.com/DanforthWright Danforth Wright

Apparently Fiji did not. It’s odd to find somebody saying this is not like WoW in the sea of idiots calling it a WoW clone… very odd indeed.

      • Eagleeye595 .

I played vanilla before blizzard even split servers to regions! and the quests were these… kill 5 wolves come back now go kill 7, oh you done? ok go kill 30 now and come get this new axe. now go kill 50 birds and lets start all over again… anyone who says otherwise is clearly a troll and or has never played vanilla.

    • Ravenia Darkfae

Actually those WoW quests up till cataclysm were standard. AQnd even post cata are standred just added a gimic. Most of what you described is the golin starting area, which had thozse cool fun quests. but questing before cata were cut and dry. Also ffxi had more gimicy quests, then WoW did and was older. Again this is beta, more gimicy quests will come out. ur compairing a game that 1 expec made it go a 180 to a new game. Yes ffxiv ARR is a new game done in 2 years.

Its not a wow clone at all. Yeah it uses popular UI/battle mechanics similar to what has been around since everquest however its the safe choice. Also, the MMO genre isnt falling apart its almost the only system people feel safe with because all who have tried something drastically different got craped on by players, thus causing them to fail because the mechanics weren’t what they expected.

I have only one question. Subscription, buy-to-play, or free-to-play? That will decide if and when I bother with this game. I’ve been a Final Fantasy fan for decades, and loved FFXI, but for me the days of a subscription MMO are definitively over. I’m not saying a sub based MMO can’t do well, they clearly still can, just saying that one will never get my money. To each his own.

    • saxophone15

      Did you read the article?

      Subscription based :)

      • http://www.facebook.com/jonathan.hornsby.7 Jonathan Hornsby

        Thank you.

I must say I’m disappointed, and honestly still wondering how they can justify that given what happened with 1.0, but I suppose the game will speak for itself, and the community will speak for it, when the time comes. All I’ll say is that this game is going to have to do something pretty major for me to even consider paying a sub for it, and without some form of “try before you buy” option so I’ll know first hand if its worth the money I will never touch it.

        • saxophone15

I believe phase 4 of the beta is an open beta…so that would be a chance to try it for free.

As for the game itself, I think the draw will be for people who are already fans of Final Fantasy. I honestly don’t think it needs to do anything ground breaking (in regards to that audience).

    • Ravenia Darkfae

Hate to tell ya this john, free to play mmo are infact more exspensive to play then play to play mmo. This is from cash shop items and buying the content updates. I’ve never played a free mmo w/o paying out the ass every month to be on par. take example dcuo. They have roughly 6-7 dlc you “need” to buy for 10 each. free and premium have tiny money caps and ur better off just paying 15 a mnth for all the benifits including free dlc. MMo require money to update and server upkeep. If you followed ffxiv at all it has a 180 turn around.

shouldn’t judge a game based on little experience. and outdated info (i’m not a final fantasy fan)

      • http://www.facebook.com/jonathan.hornsby.7 Jonathan Hornsby

I played the original Guild Wars for years and the only thing I ever paid money for was the expansions. Likewise I’ve been playing Guild Wars 2 since beta, have a max level character, seen all the content, and have the best gear in the game, yet haven’t paid a dime above the box cost.

While I do agree with your statement in a general sense, it is more than a little outdated. While most “free-to-play” MMOs do try to scam you at every turn there are still good ones out there, it all depends on the developer and publisher you’re dealing with. These days subscription fees are largely unnecessary and even the biggest games can maintain themselves with near constant updates and free content using only a cosmetic based cash shop. Sub based games are only still produced at all because people are still willing to pay sub fees.

That said I prefer the tried and true “buy-to-play” model. Pay for the game itself up front and then never have to worry about a sub fee. That model has been working for literally every other video game ever made since games started being made, and the recent DLC obsession has proven more profitable, while still being optional to players (if implemented properly), than a sub fee anyway. Why it is only now being applied to the MMO genre is a mystery to me, and the only reason I can think for it is publisher greed and a misinformed player base that still thinks subscriptions are necessary and have some other effect than to restrict the size of the player base.

        • Ravenia Darkfae

correction, Guild wars was an Orpg, an online role play game not an mmorpg. And again guild wars 2 does have a cash shop, and tend like all other free to play mmo go pay to win. You need money fot content. Free to play games have slower content updates, tiny dlc that u pay $10 and do end up eing required due to it being more content. Sub fees are not unessisary, they very much are. How do you think content is developed? servers are maintained. I played a ton of free to play games. Over 20, while i played 10 subbed games.

As even yoshida stated mmo need to be built with the payment in mind. Even dcuo is pay to win with replay badges and that game is TINY for 2 year old mmo. Alot of free to play games release mnthly cash chop items and tiny dlc that add 4 quests 2 raids as an example of dcuo. I rather get 50 quests, 4 raids and 100 new peices of gear added.

Again, in free to play u can wind up paying 100 a mnth to be on par. where sub mmo you pay 12-15 and on par.

          • Ravenia Darkfae

free to play games very rarely stay free, you gotta pay at some point. And most have heavy restictions. Like mabinogi had alot of inventory restrictions, no bazaar, and u had to buy a mount and a pet with real cash. The best gear game from bought items loot things. Same for gear dyes. Maple story made u buy the new classes. The only true free to play MMo, are MUD or text based online games. Even free realms puts cap on stuff ut hey, you get a life time sub for 35 dollors. And cash shop vanity stuff.

          • http://www.facebook.com/rasmus.nielsen.75491 Rasmus Nielsen

Shows how few Free to play MMO’s you’ve played. Perhaps you should stop playing the crappy ones.

          • Thurion

I dont want to be in the middle of a discussion here but i’ve played GW2 and the Black Lions Market has a lot of game-breaking things, you can buy better axes, mining pikes, extract tools and keys, things that you cant obtain any other way, at least it was that way after i left the game (i Have a lvl 80 Norn Guardian with top level armorer and jeweler)… I’m playing TERA right now and, even if the game looks good and the combat looks great too, the VIP market has LOTS of game-breaking things, even more than GW2… I’m also playing in FFXIV ARR now, started in phase 2 and can say that i cant wait for phase 3, i cant even wait for the launch, im gonna pay for it and play the crap out of that awesome game.

          • http://www.facebook.com/jonathan.hornsby.7 Jonathan Hornsby

Shows you’ve never even played the game. The only thing in the GW2 cash shop is cosmetic skins, minis, dyes, and account upgrades like character slots. Nothing that in any way gives an objective advantage. Likewise it has been getting pretty big updates monthly since release, including a new dungeon (with another coming in four days), new story content, and a huge new location in addition to a lot of fixes and tweaks. GW1 was much the same, and it was “free” for over six years and counting.

Yes in most free-to-play games you end up having to pay a ton to stay competitive, I’ve played a few like that, but that is the same thing as sub fees; publisher greed. A game needs neither to be profitable.

          • Eagleeye595 .

Cash = influence= karma= gear= advantage pay to win you can keep arguing if you like, but i am done.

          • Jonathan Hornsby

That is moronic. I’m sorry but there is no other word for it. Max stat gear can be obtained through a half dozen other, more direct, and faster methods in game. Mine came from dungeons, and I know lots of people who just crafted theirs and had full level 80 exotic sets waiting in their account banks from as low as level forty. Frankly anyone who goes through the long and complicated system you outlined is an idiot who deserves to be scammed over and over and over until their parents take the credit card back, because clearly they are too immature to handle money responsibly.

    • Eagleeye595 .

While i respect your choice and how you plan to spend your hard earned money, i would like to point out this one thing. If you claim to be a FF fan for decades than you would know that if Enix fails with this one chances of them going under are very likely… what am i saying? if you truly are a fan then stop asking if there will be a sub when you already know how 11 works :) sub keeps most trolls away from our wonderful community which is what made 11 such a great game to play for a decade.

I played FF14 at launch and uninstalled it an hour later, I hated it that much. I’ve played alpha and closed beta and have to say i am loving the changes, It is a case of each to their own though. I’m not necessarily a final fantasy fan, but I am a fan of well crafted fantasy MMOs. I’ve played both Tera and GW2, and while I briefly enjoyed the latter I am not a fan of action style combat so I prefer the traditional MMO combat found in FF14.

It’s difficult to rebut the negative comments regarding combat without breaking the NDA but what I will say is that the closed beta has so far been very narrow in scope and the full combat system hasn’t been implemented yet.

As an aside I have to laugh when people make a macro for their abilities and then complain about boredom.

I am keeping an open mind until we get to test the full system as the game nears its release version. I just wish others would do the same.

  • Brohame

Interesting. I might actually give it try this time around.

  • DoctorOverlord

Nicely detailed article. Good to hear things have been improved, I do wonder whether the game can bring back players who were previously burned but it be interesting to see if it can.

Also is the current head size slider in the game bugged? Some of characters in the screenshots have freaky tiny heads!

    • Ravenia Darkfae

there are no slider, they are all pre set options and head sizes are all normal in said screen shots. These are morwe life like, not cartoony like most games with larger head sizes.

      • DoctorOverlord

Some of the head sizes in the screenshots are not normal. Look at Image #8. That character’s head is only about as wide as her neck! And her hand could cover her whole face from chin to the top of her head :o A hand should only go from the chin to the top of the eyebrows on a normal face.

Most of the heads looks okay, only some of them look weird which was why I thought made there’s some head size slider in the game. Or do some of the non-human races have odd proportions?

  • http://twitter.com/McGamor Michael

Overall a decent article. But…telling players: “With no free trial for NEW players, it may be the only chance you get without having to pay.” is a terrible thing to say. I have always disliked hearing about players signing up for a beta to get a free trial without being there to actually help test the game like they are supposed to be.

It reminds me of the crud I saw on YouTube during the Defiance beta where “some” Xbox testers would not even try to hide their skipping feedback windows in beta just to play the game and be someone who has a gameplay video up for hits. Then when the game launched and was buggy, they complained to the devs for not catching the bugs…

Also, I do not agree with making a point about not being ported to the a dungeon via group finder. The way I see it is that it’s a waste of making an open persistent world if people get ported everywhere all the time instead of taking the time to enjoy the hard work the devs put into a game environment.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Byrne/100001642673542 Michael Byrne

Hi Michael! I agree with your sentiments about “beta” these days but like it or not (particularly open betas) are used mostly for trial purposes these days. I like your point on the “porting” too here. I maybe could have worded that a little differently in hindsight. My point was not to make it sound like a megative (I liked walking because of the visuals) but more to just make it clear that there was no typical queue system as of right now.

I couldn’t agree more buddy i am a FFXI Veteran i started playing first day servers went up in North America and only stopped playing 11 when 14 was released (yes even as bugged as it was) i still played it and loved the f**k out of it. So when ARR is finally out i would totally switch from the old lady 11 to the new GF 14 easy! and as far as 11 goes if you recall we couldn’t port to many places before aby and VW in other words i for one will not be heartbroken if non FF fans don’t come to play 14 simply because it doesn’t instaport me everywhere i wanna go, and because it doesn’t do the quests for me with a little arrow and mobs dying for me as i get closer to it. Mark my words 14 comes out it will be the big hit it should have been thanks to Failnix it failed the first time around… but because they admited that they nearly destroyed a great tittle they deserve our support. And they will get my support i have already ordered the CE for Ps3 and plan on keeping my PC version as well

    Well Sir,

I have been following you for along time now..Love the article…But, The combat to me , You know how strongly i feel about Sub game’s not being ” Action Combat ”

Even with all the decent points you have stated , That is the one thing that would make me Never be a Sub Player..Just for that Alone… As i seen another comment PvP..whats that going to be… A bunch of toons standing in 1 spot battling ?… Not good at all.

If it goes the route of GW2 or TSW.. They Will get money out of me, Do that , Add an item mall.. B2P would bring more players like myself into the game And spend $$$ in the shop.
Give it a year and B2P it may just become.. Thats my prediction at release.
Only when ESO releases will we see what toll it takes on thier sub’s !

    Thanks for the New’s !

You wrote a great article and for that i thank you, but the version you played is Build that can’t even be compared to release. So keep that in mind the next time you decide to judge what the game can and cannot do when it comes out.

FFXI was slowly implementing each stage of the game as it went along. I can see that happening with FFXIV as well the initial content is going to give everyone a chance to get there feet wet and then slowly begin to raise the bar as per end game content.

As for now this is really just a initial step to see how the response is going to be for players to come in and start a fresh.

Personally cannot wait I have stopped playing FFXI for awhile now and really cant wait to sink my teeth into this game.

The way FFXI was ending the game content was just all over the map. There was so much end game areas the game was ENDLESS. The armor and weaponry was just as endless as well. Not only that to play the game you had to play jobs that were not really even the job you were seeking the armor/weapons for.

DRG was my job in FFXI but was very useless through my entire game play of FFXI and was just a drag that it took so much effort to make it viable that it was pointless.

FFXIV is going to be a great success I can feel it, and I really hope I can get a beta key soon cause I wanna dive in now!

For all those that are even thinking of doubting this game I can assure you this game is going to rock out so hard!

    CANT WAIT!

I really appreciate this article, I played FFXI from North America release till I basically completed everything offered in Aht Urhgan expansion pack. XI was admittedly my first MMO and was probably too young to appreciate the great gameplay it had to offer at the time, but was very quickly mesmerized and engulfed in the just “happy go lucky” feel of the game. SE has a was of creating games that create long lasting memories. I have played quite a few MMOs since my time in Vana’diel and have enjoyed a few of them but nothing like XI. I know many will call me an FFXI fan boy and whatever else they can think of. The game I felt had the most potential in creating that feeling that FFXI did was SWTOR (which i reluctantly continue to play to this day online atm actually). SWTOR had all the potential in the world, it had dark side, light side factions, blasters, sabers, and perhaps the biggest name in the SciFi community and (in this gamers opinion) Bioware had done nothing but fail the Star Wars name. Yet I continue to play it even though the Devs dont care about subscribers at all (much less f2pers so im told). The way you describe the closed beta and what I’ve taken from countless videos from Devs and Yoshi-P is that they care about the subscribers and WANT to make this game enjoyable. Kudos SE and the ARR developer team for caring about those of us who are willing to pay to play a GOOD, ENJOYABLE game.

And if you can (dont know with the NDA) but in relation to FFXI how does the class switching compare? When I played XI you went to Moogle house to change classes. With the Job and Class system can you switch both Class and Job with the switching of a weapon? Just curious, thanks in adavance and thanks again for this very helpful article.

Are there other quests to do now besides the Levequests? I got SOOO
bored doing the same quests over and over. Also, do they limit the
quests you can do each day? TYVM.

    • Michael Byrne

There are a ton of quests and things to do besides levequests now :) Levelquests themselves though are still limited to a certain number per day. Thanks!
