On Tuesday, Mike B and I discussed the impending release of Dark Souls on the PC.

I hope you didn’t get too excited.

A report from Eurogamer confirms some rumors that had some PC RPG enthusiasts depressed. Developer From Software confirmed at E3 that the PC version of Dark Souls will be strictly a port of the console version, meaning all of the quirks and technical issues will still be present.

The PC port, dubbed the Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition, will also have the same frame rate issues as the original release.

Namco-Bandai brought a new gameplay demo as well as a bunch of new screenshots to E3.

Are you going to pick up the Prepare to Die Edition when it launches on August 24?

As always, keep following GAMEBREAKER for all of your E3 coverage.

No ad?? I love supporting the team but what a relief!

I think I’m still going to buy it. If I think it sucks, I’ll just try trade it for the Xbox version.

You can’t trade it. Steam> stays on your account
GFWL>Stays on your account < Both one time activation

Namco thinks PC gamers will take it from behind like console gamers lol

They didn’t take the easy way out. It seems you guys don’t know that they did this because a lot of people signed a petition to have it ported over. The easy way out would have just to have said no and not done it. From software like many other Japanese developers have no experience with developing for PC at all because PC is pretty much a non existent market in Japan. Ninja blade their only other PC games was ported by ND games. They are learning how to develop for the PC just to try and please their fans that only seem to whine and moan at them. The port hasn’t been in development for a year or anywhere near that it’s coming to PC late because they never originally planned to do a PC version. Seriously if you are going to do an opinionated news piece at least do some bloody research about what you are reporting and putting forward your views on.

Honestly I don’t care if it has the same issues as the console versions because the console versions are still great games, I’m just glad I will now get to play it properly since I don’t own a console.

Pc gaming isn’t just about 60FPS and better graphics, and anyway lets face it the fans will make fixes for it like they always do.

This game is getting too much hate for this

This game is nice on console and will be just as nice on PC for fans OF GAMEPLAY even if its a straight up port.

People act like this is a AAA game with a AAA budget when its basically a dev house not much bigger then most indie devs who are bringing this to PC because of a gamer’s petition (the only one that has worked AFAIK). Hopefully they dont see all this hate and drop the whole thing and completely dismiss PC gaming in the future.

The issue (for me, anyway) isn’t so much that they’re not making it a fully polished PC game, I could totally deal with a console port, provided it ditched GFWL, just because I like the concept and gameplay. For me, the issue is that they’re asking proper PC game prices, when what they’re selling is a year-old port.

The frame-rate capping is odd design, but I could let that slide as 30fps is still smooth animation (not as good as 60, but whatever). The lack of bug fixes is inexcusable though. One freaking year and they didn’t fix anything? Way to show the entire PC market you just don’t give a shit.

24/30 fps is a good minimum standard sure.

      Movies/PAL use 24 fps.
NTSC is 29.97 fps (aka, “30″ fps )

      These have motion blur however!
Games have no motion blur, so the choppiness of a 24fps game appears much larger than the choppiness of a 24 fps movie.

They clearly didn’t intend / almost still look like they don’t intend to release this on PC. They clearly don’t give a damn and are open about it. I’m sure that if it was “From” that took the decision (assuming they’d want to release on PC), it would probably have fixed issues. But this is clearly Namco-Bandai submitting to the pressure and putting as little money into it as possible.

It will be a terrible release. You can forget having moderated servers. It’s going to be 100% open season for hackers. I’m also assuming there won’t be compatibility QA done on the game so it won’t run on half of the rigs. New features are great, assuming they also get a BIT of QA, which I doubt. But hey, at least they’re honest, right? They could have just posted the main menu on Steam for 1$ and told us “Hey, this technically is “Dark Souls on PC”, exactly what you guys were crying about!”"

I’m still going to buy it regardless. Someone will mod it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/josh.arner Josh Arner

No longer a day one buy.  Good thing it’s going to be on Steam so we can wait for a big sale.

    • http://twitter.com/Perro_de_Pelea KampfHund

This. I still want to play it, but no way would I pay day 1 prices for something which isn’t going to be a proper PC game.

    Austin is mad :D

  • Revanhavoc

I respect the gaming media for getting the truth to come out and for representing the customer, not just the industry.

Austin you were really passionate about dark souls for the pc and it made me exited. Now you’re on my end of summer list ;)

  • Jado Cast

    Disappointing.

  • http://twitter.com/zerconi Samuli Rauatmaa

I don’t get why there are FPS cap and narrow FOV in many PC ports… Don’t they simply care about PC or are they just lazy?

    • http://twitter.com/H3L1ON Samir

most developers don’t care anymore for pc becuz,
pc games are almost always victim of piracy and the return is lower than consol games
wich they scapegoat on piracy and not on a bad port saddly enough

  • ricky hannigan

It’s not too big of a surprise, this is From Softwares first time making a PC port so they’re not going to be able to do a lot of anything useful.

Between this and GFWL, it probably won’t get as big of a response as they would have liked. Through no fault but their own but of course, they’ll try and scapegoat something else.

Also, if Modding is allowed, hopefully some of the modders will help fix some of From Softwares problems. Which they better allow cause it would help, A TON.

  • maztex

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. They have a game that could have sold a lot, now people are just gonna wait for the Steam sale or “borrow” it from pirate bay. Why not just hold off on the release and bring on someone that knows how to port a dam game to pc rather then give us a half ass game.

  • Wim Borret

Still this game was amazing on consoles
I’m gonna play it see what happens
I am willing to borow the controller from my friend to try it out

  • http://www.facebook.com/offroadsharky37 Dustin O’Leary

So the fuck what its on PC!!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/offroadsharky37 Dustin O’Leary

Even if its a port it still kicks the shit out of everything else.

  • http://www.facebook.com/offroadsharky37 Dustin O’Leary

You sound like a bunch of fags first off, don’t dis a game just because its not up to your faggot ass expectations

  • Elias Campbell

Dude really Dustin? Why should a company release a game with virtually no compensation for the pc platform. When a game is released as PC it should be at least a little bit optimized. The lazy ass devs didn’t even re do the freaking tutorial. I was pumped for this game but its virtually un playable for me on PC. I own a controller I shouldn’t be forced to buy one for ta game i bought that I cant return. I don’t understand why its so hard to make  few small changes such as proper controls.
