Gearbox producer says to expect a Borderlands 2 level cap increase by March
Gearbox has been talking about a level cap increase for their most recent game Borderlands 2 for some time. In a recent interview, producer James Lopez said we should expect to see more levels (beyond 50) sometime during the year’s first quarter which ends in March.
“We do have one planned, and it will be for quite a few levels, which will allow you to play for quite a bit longer,” Lopez said
Borderlands 2′s SHiFT system, which was implemented as a way for Gearbox to distribute special items and customization skins to “Borderlands 2” players, had a big part in deciding the perfect moment to make everyone more powerful. Lopez explained that after poring over player stats tracked by Borderlands 2′s SHiFT system, they decided that March would be just about right.
“With ‘Borderlands 1’ we had to go by forum posts, and by checking out the number of times certain achievements had been unlocked to really get an idea of where players were,” Lopez said. “But SHiFT allows us to see a lot more about the way players are playing the game, and see what they’re doing.”
“We wanted to give people enough time to get a least one level 50 in there, and then see from there how many people are doing this … We also didn’t want to wait so long that people were no longer interested, or felt like it wasn’t coming.”
A level cap increase is definitely much needed at this point especially if Gearbox plans to continue to launch downloadable content for Borderlands 2, as extensive as the recent Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt. Some players, I’m sure, are still happy to be aimlessly grinding through Pandora, but I know it will be nice for some to see that experience bar fill up again. Personally writing this has made me want to play through the game again! Maybe as the Mechromancer this time!
And I shall end with a quote from my favorite character Marcus Kincaid (of course the gun salesman is my favorite):
“Well, it’s like I’ve been saying… each day brings new possibilities. Yesterday: no Vault, today: Vault!” -Marcus
