The War Z Reveals Map Images/Size
10 Comments

Hammerpoint Interactive’s Executive Producer Sergey Titov revealed in the War Z forums two new images showcasing the size of the map players will be running, scavenging, and fighting off the undead in.

Titov stated the image showing off the landscape “shows pretty much 90% of the [playable] map”.

While Titov stated players could expect upwards of 130 to 250 players, the optimal server load for players would be “70-100. This is if you don’t want any overcrowding. At this number you’ll get only slightly higher chance to meet other players than in DayZ.”

Gamers will be getting around 160 to 170 sq km worth of game play terrain.

Let us know in the comments below whether you think this is too small, just right, or way to large for your zombie survival needs.

I think that the size is just right

I wonder if it is all one big map or if there will be loading screens. I also hope there is not fast travel as I think it would ruin the surviveval imersion. Hope Dayz’s will be bigger as it is going to have player housing so a map of this size is a little to small. 500Km + in my opinion would be about right as long as cars where a little more common.

Fast travel would destroy a game like this!

Though I have to admit I do wonder if there will be load screens…hmm.

Too small. In a persistent survival game the world is everything. Depends on how “thick” the urban areas are, but judging from the screenshots there’s a lot of foresty shit that makes the map, in my eyes, a breeze to discover and not enough saturated to enjoy for a longer period of time.

    DayZ promises more, muff said.

Unless there are levels underground like caverns, mines, sewage ways etc.

I’m glad the article listed the actual scale.   Those screens look like an appropriate size for a large PvP map they might be too small for a zombie apocalypse style setting.

A PvP map is intended to make certain that players will encounter each other since killing other players is the point.   A zombie apocalypse map needs to be much, much bigger because the point is establishing a sense of isolation and isolation.  Running into another living person should be an uncommon event at best.

Maps that are about 6 miles on each side for 200 players running around might keep the encounters down, but I don’t know.    Especially if players can get into vehicles as the last screenshot shows. I suppose it depends on how the maps are designed on the ground level.

DayZ is roughly 225 sq km give or take a few dead bodies for added/shorten length.
