Cyberpunk 2077's Night City May Be Multilingual

CD Projekt Red considers recording every Cyberpunk 2077 character’s voice in their “native” language.

Okay, so that might be a bit confusing at first. But, think of it this way. You’re in a major city where a lot of immigrants live, what are the chances you’re going to hear a dozen different languages throughout the day?  Pretty damned good, I’d say.

So, taking that into account, let’s take a look at the world CD Projekt Red is planning on building in Cyberpunk 2077. The games’ setting, Night City, is a metropolis full of people from all over the world. Why wouldn’t they all speak in their native languages? An interview with the game’s lead writer, Sebastian Stepien by Dubscore and translated by  cyberpunk.net forum member darcler, suggests that exactly what the team is looking at doing.

According to darcler’s translation, Stepien states:

As of yet no decisions have been made, but we’re thinking about a system that could tell the world’s story. The idea is to record everything in original languages, i.e. if we’ll meet Mexicans in the game, they’ll be taking — Mexican slang even, portrayed by Mexican actors. The player would be able to buy a translator implant, and depending on how advanced it is, he’ll get better or worse translation.

You can’t reliably recreate street slang of Los Angeles or some other American city, you can’t simply dub it and reproduce those emotions, rhythm of speech, mannerisms. Everything has to be cohesive. Otherwise we’d simply hear that Polish actors are trying to imitate Americans. That won’t work.

How do you understand what’s going on?

Well, you don’t… Unless, that is, you’re willing to buy a translation implant. Don’t start freaking out about RMT’s yet guys. No one’s said that. Most likely you will be spending your hard earned in game currency to buy this implant and others.

According to Stepien, the accuracy of the implant would vary depending upon how much you’re willing to spend on it. As should be expected, a more expensive one would have a better chance of letting you know someone is saying “I’d like to buy that orange.” than something bad about your mother.

Stepien also clarifies that right now, no decisions have been made as of yet, but it sounds like a pretty amazing idea to me. It sounds even better when he states that they don’t want to do something along the lines of having Polish actors trying to imitate Americans.

Now that they’ve said it, I want it.

This is one of those things that sound so unique and interesting to me that I feel like I have to have it.  To have several languages in a major city in any game has the potential to make it feel more alive and organic… and real.  For this reason alone, I hope they really do institute the multiple language system into Cyberpunk 2077.

In true Cyberpunk fashion.  You spend more money to get way more awesome tech and gear.

You could spend some petty cash for a single armblade like Ezio.  Or you could fork out a car loan and just get a chainsaw arm.

Very cool idea to give the setting a cyberpunk world feel but I don’t think they should go overboard with it.   Different quality of translations would multiply the amount of text/VO needed for all the dialogs.     And frankly they could get the same effect by simply doing uniform translations while using a variety of different languages.

VO is a nice touch, but after SWTOR is seems clear that MMOs don’t need to spend too many resources on it.
