The Cyberpunk 2077 trailer depicts a sexy yet dangerous future of tall buildings, cybernetic police forces and beautiful killer robots.

If years of watching cyberpunk movies and anime have taught me anything, it’s that the future will be a very beautiful yet very dark and dangerous place. And, it would seem that the people at CD Projekt Red feel the same way if their newly released Cyberpunk 2077 trailer is to be any indication.

This trailer, is, for lack of a better word — and honestly with no attempt at exaggeration on my part — stunning.  Yes, I realize it’s just a cinematic trailer and that gameplay may feel quite a bit different, but as someone who loves cyberpunk, I’m excited.  If CD Projekt Red pull off creating a game world that feels anything remotely like the Cyberpunk 2077 trailer, I’m sold.

Based on the table-top game.

pc games Bullets, Blood And Killer RobotsIf you spend a little time on the Cyberpunk 2077 website, one of the things you will stumble across is a post explaining the difficulties of converting a pen and paper-based role-playing game into a video game.  In this case, they are referring to a table-top game named Cyberpunk 2020, a skill-based RPG featuring combat, high tech weaponry and cybernetic modification.

Pretty much describes the trailer, doesn’t it?

You keep using this word, “cyberpunk”…

Yeah… I do. Well, for one, it is the title of the game.  But for those uninitiated to the genre, cyberpunk is a science fiction genre that sprang into popularity in the 1980′s and focused on a “high-tech” but dark future.

A loose description would be that cyberpunk takes place in the not-too-distant future. It features a world controlled by corporations rather than governments and is filled with a high-tech lifestyle that features hacking, artificial intelligence, cybernetic advancements and the ability to just literally “plug” yourself in.

Keep in mind that’s a very loose description. I feel like many of you reading this will, of course, already have a very strong grasp on cyberpunk, so it pointless to write a wiki entry about it.

So when does Cyberpunk 2077 come out?

There are no details on when the game will release as of yet. In fact, the video states very clearly that the date is “When it’s ready.” But, apparently we can look forward to more information on the 5th of February.

Yes, the date is marked on my calendar.

Yes, I will be waiting to pounce on the news and fill you in on it!

    This looks awsome…
i hope they get it right

It’s just CGI…I fell for this trick with SWTOR….amazing teaser trailers built in CGI by outside companies for a game in low production with no full dev team that aren’t set to release until 2015 when technology will out-date technology/graphics today…waste of time believing this game will be any good until the final product with gameplay trailer is put out or beta’d. False hope and unnecessary hype…kills far to many decent games.

    • http://quintlyn.com/ QuintLyn Bowers

I tend to think my hype level for games is pretty balanced.  In almost 30 years of playing video games I’ve been disappointed by two.  Not bad, eh? :p

    • http://www.facebook.com/kirzansix Mike Coulombe

Nope, sorry, CD Projekt never tried to create hype based on false material and/or a widely popular brand name. What do you want them to do, NOT release the trailer so that disgruntled gamers like you can say nothing about it? I don’t understand. Please provide a positive solution.

      • http://twitter.com/cr4zycru Cruc

Not release CGI trailers in pre-alpha / pre-production for a game not due out till late 2015 – 2016. That is called generating hype. It is a terrible thing in this industry because no game has lived up to CGI trailers. What should be shown is 2 years from now 8 months prior to release, a gameplay video of what really matters: great story, great gameplay, great controls. Until then this trailer was nothing but a marketing ploy to get funding and find developers for a pre-production game.

        • http://www.facebook.com/kirzansix Mike Coulombe

Yes, because with a CGI trailer they are forcing you to be extremely interested in the product and you now have to buy it. Seriously, know your priorities, and stop blaming others for being THAT easily convinced.

There are clearly no “facts” about the game other than the setting. We all know this, thank you for enlightening us on this extremely obvious piece of information. The trailer says more info on Feb 13th, so let’s wait until then before completely dismissing this project now, shall we?

I still don’t understand the SWTOR + 2015 thing. I guess I also don’t understand the Cyberpunk 2077 + 2015-2016 thing. It would seem you employ “Too early CGI trailer” tactics by being extremely vague.

holy shitballs.  Having a william gibsonastic orgasm right now.

Anyone else amused that they copied that “when its ready” line from Arena Net?

    • http://quintlyn.com/ QuintLyn Bowers

It made me giggle when I saw it.  Which is a bit of a feat considering I was pretty much agog the rest of the time.

    • Revanhavoc

Nah, Blizzard was saying that about their games long before. They never give release dates. I remember waiting for WoW reading “when it’s ready” for ages and thinking you arrogant little ___(people)!

  • http://twitter.com/KliffUndersn Klifford von Undersn

Very nice. I am definitely intrigued to say the least.

  • http://twitter.com/spikeadilly SpikeB

I would love to see a very dark Cyberpunk game done properly. I also am definitely intrigued. Cruc. Don’t be so negative. Just because you were duped by one game(weren’t we all?) doesn’t mean every new game with a great CGI into trailer is going to be another SWTOR. Sure it could be but lets hope it will be something fresh that we all need.  I personally will keep an eye out for this one. Thanks QuintLyn!

    awesome

    we need more cyberpunk games

The story is intriguing. I want more. Also, it reminds me a bit of Ghost in the Shell, could be quite a good game when it comes out.

I loved the woman on the Billboard in the undies with the Cyberarm during the vid as she is taken directly from the Cyberpunk 2020 pen and Paper RPG rulebook.  It was a nice nod to the game origins.

  • http://twitter.com/thesylvan Jim Sullivan

I hope it ends up as a good game and true to cyberpunk, which became popular in the 1980s, btw.

    • http://quintlyn.com/ QuintLyn Bowers

Grr… That was a typo on my part due to the fact that I waffled on typing it as ’80s and 1980′s about 3 times.  That and I was in an epic battle with the video upload. D:

We need more CD Projekt Red is what we need. No other dev cares as much, period. It’s probably the only big guys that care about the player. I can’t wait for Cyberpunk 2077, and I already can’t wait for its Enhanced Edition packed with all pre-order bonuses for free! (Something everyone else charges full price)

  • Jeremy Keat

Forever limited to skepticism until I see gameplay thanks to recent MMOs. I want intuitive gameplay that can at least emulate some realistic physics instead of things like target based EQ model gameplay. Vindictus is a good example I wish more games would go or something like Mass Effect for shooters (with better control design) or anything close to those aspects or that of shooters.

Games are much more adrenaline pumping and immersive that way for me than watching a UI, (not the game world) and reacting to what I see and what is visually perceived in game rather than x, z coordinates or having things targeted automatically.

  • theunwarshed

first off, thanks Q for bringing this to us.

second, does a CGI trailer have any valid purpose.  well, before i saw this i was totally unaware that a cyberpunk game was being developed by CDPR, so i would say that generating “awareness” and subsequently, “interest” (for my part) is a valid purpose.

i know SWTOR’s trailers were immensely popular, however, i would caution the devs about overdoing them the way BW did (and yes, i know they were commissioned) for a couple of reasons: 1) budget and 2) over saturation which can cause a disconnect between great trailers and actual game play.

  • Hicks64

<3 Bladerunner and GiTS, so hope this turns out good! I think the Feb 5th date is info on Witcher 3.

  • Demi_God

It’s interesting that the criminal becomes the cop.  A lot of potential for story in just a little clip.

    • http://quintlyn.com/ QuintLyn Bowers

Absolutely. And the use of that song is a nice touch.

      • Demi_God

The music was a perfect touch.

If CDPR gives us any type of Co-Op, then I am going to have to finagle Q into some missions! As for 2/5 I can only picture some sort of Witcher meets GTA…

  • Patrick Monteith

I’ve been waiting for more info on this for ages, glad to see someone else is as excited for it as I am!

    Oh, btw, WANTWANTWANTWANTWANTWANTWANT

    The trailer is Well Done!

  • Joseph Legemah

So can we expect another shit thorwing campaign from Bioware for this game like they did for The Witcher 2?

  • Depravity

I loved the Witcher series and if this comes anywhere near those two, it’s going to be amazing.

That’s a sexy android, not a sexy robot, shame on you Q.

A message hidden in red blinking text in background :  Do you like our latest creation? We certainly hope so You may remember that we sometimes send you guys secret messages like this. It’s a great way for us to speak right to you instead of burying ourselves in corporate mumbo-jumbo so let’s begin!
First of all – have you noticed all the details in our teaser (yes, it’s a teaser. We’ll make a proper trailer in the future)? If you know the Cyberpunk setting there are some things you can spot, like implants – look for the weapon hands and the real skin – corporate emblems that should look familiar and more. Happy hunting!
You’re probably curious about the release date. It’s currently scheduled a way off in 2015 but in truth the delivery date is more like “when it’s done.” We will release Cyberpunk to you when we’re convinced it is nothing but pure, refined, unadulterated awesome. We want it to be the most kick ass futuristic RPG ever – OK, maybe this sounds pretty bully, but it is our actual goal! You judge if we deliver it!
Oh – and you may wonder why we announced our game so early before the release. The reason is that we’re still building our dev team so if you are a talented dude or dudette willing to work in a really different company (gamers rule & boring corporate stuff drools!) on a super ambitious project, send us your application right now! careers@cdprojektred.com
So you want to know what kind of game Cyberpunk 2077 will be? The short description is that it will be a story-heavy, nonlinear, open world RPG based on the well known Cyberpunk pen&paper system and setting. Building open world games is something we are mastering right now and we believe that properly joining nonlinear gameplay with an excellent story telling will bring a totally new quality. Mmm… We’ll tell some more about it soon!
And that’s not all that’s new. We are about the reveal our other project which is much closer to being completed and yes, it will also be a fully open-world game with an intense story. You can probably guess the game we’re talking about On the 5th of February it will all be clear.
So stay tuned as we will have quite a lot to show and tell you soon!
We are waiting for you on our newly created forum called Afterlife – what other name could we have chosen for it?
    CD Projekt RED Team

  • DoctorOverlord

Very cool trailer.   Definitely has a cyberpunk feel to it.   I was a fan of the Neuromancer and the like, hopefully the game will be good.

  • Revanhavoc

Seems so amazing… But I think being excited for the Witcher 3 to break all of our computers some time soon is a more realistic expectation.

Still, the concept for 2077 looks sick!
