It’s actually happening. DayZ is officially being made into a standalone game!

According to a post made by Rocket on the DayZ Developer Tumblr blog, the game will be made by Bohemia Interactive with him as the project lead. The team is extremely excited and although the post doesn’t give a whole lot of information there are a few details.

First: the updates for the mod will be done in tandem with the development of the stand-alone game…so current mod players won’t be left out in the cold. Second: Rocket stated the project will follow the Minecraft model…players will be able  to purchase the game while in alpha at a discount.

For more insight of whats to come be sure to watch Gary Gannon’s interview with Dean “Rocket” Hall right here on GAMEBREAKER.

This is amazing news!!! Congrats to Rocket and his team! I’m looking forward to buying the DayZ standalone game=)

Yay I might be able to actually get DayZ to work if it goes stand along!! :D

I thought War Z was the stand alone game

War Z is a completely different developer who just wanted to make a standalone DayZ clone…War Z is not made by Rocket

Actually War Z was in the works long before the DayZ mod. Likewise Dayz could be considered a clone as well looking at other arma 2 mods..

Fucking finally! Awesome news, wish all the best to the dev team and let’s hope alpha pops out as soon as possible. I would imagine it won’t take long, because the foundations of the mod are there and coupled with the tweaking of the already established A2 engine we could see shot happening really quick.

finally u guys post some actual important information instead of the countless useless guild wars 2 drivel we see plague this site every two seconds. Games like this one is what really excites gamers

    • Old Ben

Yeah, important information! We must be ready when the real zombies come.

I’m happy one such as yourself can speak for the entire gaming community. God forbid there are players who are excited for both GW2 and DayZ.

Oh wait, there are. Like myself.

Not to mention there’s all kinds of other info they post. If none of it interests you then I suggest you look elsewhere.

Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, but when you start putting words in other people’s mouths (i.e. the entire gaming community) you sound like an a$$.

lol Mike, you make “maybe you got it for free” sound all shady…obviously they won a copy from you in a contest!  :D

the problem with this game is the engine. It is horrible in every aspect. Standalone and it will be considered but if it is anywhere close to the current engine I have other games to fill my time.
Could care less if its more player killing PVP bullshit

The game right now is NOT about killing zombies its about sitting around and sniping members of your own fucking team. Stupid

The engine could use a bunch of extra work. Polish off the inventory system and other menu’s too. I’ve went to click options twice and accidentally hit re-spawn. Zombies need animations and refining like a plate of hot of brains. I heard Rocket talk about cb’s and cellphones, those would be a great addition to unlock global or personal chat. I almost wish they could find a way to prevent people from using teamspeak or vent until they find a walkie.

The killing of other players is a slippery slope. In a realism survival game it’s a hard problem to solve. You could institute a penalty for killing other players, which is basically what the bandit skins were. It’s obvious why they threw that idea out. If you had killed enough people even in self defense you would still become a bandit, and that always meant shoot on sight. Even so, you wouldn’t be able to tell someone who has killed a bunch of people apart from anyone else simply from their clothes. They have to find a realistic way to punish people for killing other players or incentives to not kill them. I’m sure there is someone out there who has a good idea for this but it’s not me.

Once you get some nice gear, there isn’t much else to do but kill other players. Gary did a great interview with Rocket where they talked about building underground structures, and that would certainly give players more to do. I would hope they have another trick or two up their sleeve to keep people occupied even beyond that.

They need another reason beside a blood transfusion for players to work together. For the most part i hide or shoot at first contact because I’ve been killed quite a few times from not reacting. Would be great if they can find mechanics where you would benefit from contacting other people, or “group” together. How they can do that and still keep their genre intact is beyond me.

I enjoy the game as it though. Especially the idea of it, and the apparent dedication the dev team has to keep it on track with what they had originally planned. I’ll gladly shell out 15 smackers to support some new faces with new ideas.

People still play this? Man, I’m glad I didn’t step into this bandwagon, just like I didn’t for Minecraft..

  • David Favilla

You mean I have to buy it a second time?

    • maztex

You didn’t buy DayZ. you bought Arma 2.

Judging by how Rocket has been developing the mop, I am going to take a wild guess and say it will be a broken mess with mass pvp like it is now. I got bored with DayZ after a month. With a group it is too easy, play by yourself and you get shot from another player every 5 mins. I also like how Rocket is acting like the massive amount of players is amazing. Of course you have a ton of players, you did interviews (advertised) on every single gaming website there is. I don’t recall even Notch abandoning needed updates to Minecraft to do interviews everywhere. I think Rocket even held off on an update just so he could go to Rezzed and show it off. It was apparently done before he went to Rezzed, but he didn’t released the much needed update.

Well if you got a month of enjoyment out of a free mod then that is pretty dam good imo. And how is it not amazing that his mod has had over a Million people play it in under 4 months? Most mods pass people unnoticed, esspecially ones for niche hard-core games like ARMA. Its not like he was using a well known and respected engine like Source, Unreal or Cryengine. And if people where not into the mod then who would be interviewing him?

  • Avaloner31

I love the people who complain about having to buy the standalone Dayz becasue they bought ARMA 2 to play the mod version, as if they are the same thing. It would be like buying Half Life to play Counter Strike then complaining that you had to buy the Stand Alone Counter Strike Source, or having to buy (before F2P) Team Fortress 2 when you bought Quake to play the mod.

I sort of wonder if all these people complaing about bugs and paying for the stand alone etc are console gamers or young people who dont really know what Alpha is or what a mod is. I am gald these people where not as prevalent when Mods like Team Fortress, Counter Strike, DOTA etc where around and growing their communities. They where all buggy but people still played them and did not rage about it.

So what you bought ARMA 2 (A decent game in its own right) so you could play a mod for it. Get over it. There is no reason you should not have to pay for a standalone game that is being developed seperatly from the mod. Be happy that Rocket is still commited to the mod as well.

    Can. Not. Wait. !

  • http://twitter.com/TuxPants Light Yagami

When I bought Arma II for the Day Z mod, in my mind it was like a Day Z kickstarter. Don’t mind paying for the standalone on release, just glad it happened.

They got thar work cutout for them because of War Z the game. From what ive seen so far, its looking pretty good.
