Defiance Syfy Premier Two-Hour Event

Play the Game, Watch the Show

After the announcement of the Defiance Beta beginning Jan. 18th, it was only a matter of time until we heard something official about the show as well. The Defiance Syfy television premier will take place on Monday April 15th, and it will be a two-hour special event as back-story is explained, and we are introduced to the post-alien planet Earth.

It’s safe to assume that the Defiance MMORPG game launch will be taking place sometime around the Syfy series premier, so depending on how the beta goes later this month, we may be getting an official game launch date soon. Defiance MMORPG beta sign-ups are currently underway, and it’s actually a pretty neat RP-type experience, so be sure to sign up for your chance to enter the beta testing.

A revolutionary idea that allows players to not only see the stories that take place on TV, but also participate in the massively-multiplayer online world, the Defiance Syfy show and Defiance MMORPG from Trion Worlds blends two entertainment genres into one persistent universe. Events which take place in the show will effect the game, and player’s actions from the game can have an impact on the show. Alien ships have crashed on our planet and terraformed it into an unfamiliar environment and bringing new alien dangers to our world. The Defiance Syfy show takes place in the former city of St. Louis, now known as Defiance, as the characters continue their lives, dealing with the disaster that followed the alien arrivals. The Defiance MMORPG is centered around the city of San Francisco as players, known as ark-hunters, fight to survive against the alien menace and make the earth safe once again.

Defiance is an intriguing opportunity for players and viewers to be totally immersed in the world and lore of the universe they are engaged in. It will be interesting to see how each will affect the other as both progress.

I’m actually really anxious to get into the Defiance beta I just REALLY hope they don’t go down the horrid path that is selling content on top of already having an optional sub, cash shop and a box. I mean that just seems a bit too much nickel and diming just to play the game when you’ll be spending $50 minimum on the box (there’s apparently 3 editions). Overall though I think the game looks great and the show is definitely something to look forward to.

They gotta execute it really good, on both ends. I think the show can live without the game. But it can be the other way around, it just counts on which side is more prepared to take that extra step if needed. As its a interesting idea for sure.

If you watched the Twitch stream of the Defiance beta then you know that besides the gimmick of having a TV show with your game, Defiance looks like a really good third person shooter.
