Not once in my life had I ever considered the idea that a dragon might need a jet pack. They’re just not something most people would put together.
However, Belgian company Larian Studios is at E3 with a title that may prove the pairing were meant to be all along. Divinity: Dragon Commander is an upcoming game bearing the company’s Divinity franchise name.
The game — which can be loosely described as a steampunk strategy game with dragons — combines RISK-like strategy elements with more standard RTS & RPG gameplay and has a little Magic: The Gathering inspired CCG play thrown into the mix.
Of course, it’s a little more complicated than the developers just throwing all of these things together and saying “We have a game.” The CCG aspect is developed as the player gains “cards” through political-RPG decisions. Once the cards are gained, they can be used to affect the battles in the RTS portion of the game.
Players may also assist their troops in battle by becoming a dragon augmented with various items — like, oh I don’t know, a jetpack? — and fighting alongside them.
Top all of this off with an interesting cast of characters that include an undead princess who wears melons as breasts and lipstick to feel “human” and we end up with a game that has caught my attention.
