EA is stopping all ads for SimCity 5

The launch of SimCity 5 has been messy to say the least. Yesterday we reported on some of the steps being taken to smooth out server and download issues. But while things are being fixed EA is trying its best to calm things down by removing as much marketing as possible. The games publisher sent out an email this morning asking all affiliates to stop marketing campaigns “until further notice”

Here is the message in full:

“Hello Affiliates,

EA Origin has requested to pause all SimCity marketing campaigns temporarily, until further notice. We have deactivated all SimCity text links and creative and we ask you to please remove any copy promoting SimCity from your website for the time-being. To be clear we are continuing to payout commissions on all SimCity sales that are referred, however we are requesting that you please stop actively promoting the game. We will notify you as soon as the SimCity marketing campaigns have been resumed and our promotional links are once again live in the Linkshare interface. We apologize for any inconveniences that this may cause, and we thank you for your cooperation.”

LinkShare is a marketing-affiliate network that connects companies like EA with web outlets that would show text or image ads. If a user then uses one of those ads to buy a product, the website gets a share of the cash.

The email refers to multiple campaigns that EA is suspending.

SimCity’s broken because it’s just too much fun!

Game developers are still working hard to add servers as fast as they can. pc games EA Suspends Ad Campaign For SimCity 5 And NO REFUNDS!

Electronic Arts spokesperson, Kip Katsarelis posted a large forum post on the matter of server capacity and what steps are being taken to make accommodations.

Server capacity is our biggest obstacle. We launched in North America on Tuesday and our servers filled up within a matter of hours.”

she went on to explain that SimCity‘s notoriously awful DRM setbacks are a result of the game being just too enjoyable to quit!

“What we saw was that players were having such a good time they didn’t want to leave the game, which kept our servers packed and made it difficult for new players to join, We added more servers to accommodate the launch in Australia and Japan, and then more yesterday to accommodate the launch in Europe. As of right now, we are adding even more servers which will be going live over the next three days. And, our plan is to continue to bring more servers online until we have enough to meet the demand, increase player capacity and let more people through the gates and into the game…

Earlier today, we released a patch that temporarily cut off some features including leaderboards, achievements and Cheetah Speed to reduce data stress on the servers and effectively free up space so that we can let more people into the game. These are great features that we’re proud of and we’ll turn them back on soon, but our number one priority is to bring stability to our servers. This update also resolved some of the bugs and issues that have been frustrating players. You can read all about it at http://forum.ea.com/eaforum/posts/list/9341807.page

NO REFUNDS!

A spokesperson for EA’s Origin digital-distribution service previously told people they could request a refund, but now EA is backpedaling on this. The publisher is now referring everyone who asks for their money back to its return policy, which states that EA does not offer refunds for any product downloaded on Origin.

On March 5, EA global community manager for Origin Marcel Hatam posted a message to the SimCity forums that points gamers to the service’s help page.

“If you regrettably feel that we let you down, you can — of course — request a refund for your order at http://help.origin.com/contact-us,” wrote Hatam. “Though we are currently still in the process of resolving this issue.”

Hatam since amended the post to refer users to the aforementioned return policy.

Yesterday we heard all kinds of rumors about refunds for SimCity 5. Some said there were absolutely no possible refunds while a number of reddit users reported that they were able to receive refunds as long as EA was contacted directly.

EA was reportedly giving refunds as recently as yesterday afternoon. Some of the more recent posts on that thread now report that Origin customer service representatives claim that their hands are tied on the matter.

A rumor popped up not soon after that claimed EA was banning players from Origin if they requested a refund. The publisher is denying this; however, customers that dispute the charge with their credit-card company will likely be banned for making a fraudulent purchase on Origin.

Hopefully EA can get issues all sorted out and figure out some way to calm down the player base as the game looks amazing. I personally would like to go out and buy it… but I’m not going to hold my breath.

Keep an eye out as we will be keeping you posted as news comes in on the progression of SimCity 5

Update:

EA has posted their first update blog on SimCity 5 which can be read in full below or on the site here.

The blog post talks in mare detail about the addition of servers and other changes.

If you bought the game via Amazon, they will refund you for the purchase, as a special one time exception. I bought this for my wife and the refunded me as she had issues with the game. It was very quick and painless.

    • David Alcon

Amazon is awesome this way. They refunded my purchase of Diablo 3 as well without any hassle. I have always boycotted single-player games with “always-on DRM”, but I broke my rule for D3. Lesson learned. I was going to buy Sim City until I found out about the DRM. Now, I’m glad I stuck to my guns.

Beh, this all seems like a lot of trouble. :|

    Oh, EA…

I like how disputing the charge with your credit card company is called a fraudulent purchase but the complete bait and switch of EA’s SimCity is considered legit and industry standard. Wow.

I remember playing the original simcity back all those years ago, and now these horrible events have ripped the last shred of childhood innocence from me.  I know take my place among the aged and crotchety old men of the world and will now commence with the yelling at children to get off my lawn….I wonder if it would be racists to hang an EA logo from a tree.

Sad to see a good game get ruined by pirates….

    Oh wait….

    No … they are.

    Just different kind.

  • arenasb

I will never buy a game from Origin ever again. Lesson learned I guess.

    • http://twitter.com/_JAPSCAT Joey

How is this Origin’s fault? They only represent you the game and let you purchase it. This isseu lies at the developers doesn’t it?

Origin is owned by EA, EA is the distributer.

  • Mafiagryphon

The last couple of days has been tolerable but I haven’t had any luck gettnig into any server today.  Maybe they should have used more beta time to stress the servers and realize what an uber fail was on the horizon.  Long live online only games and our friend EA.

  • A1cntrler

Is there a video with this article?  Tried to load it twice, and got a Gmaestop ad, then SimCity 5 ad, then the same Gamestop ad again.

  • WhiteWolf77

Nothing new here, Just EA trying to keep their WCIA title for 2013

  • Monstercloud

After all this, not a single high-profile person will be fired/step down/be replaced. The only way that would be possible, is if one of them creates a social fiasco, that has nothing to do with the game.

At best, we can hope there is a patch within one or two weeks of the price being dropped to $30, that there will be an offline mode implemented.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Rookie918 Steve Hunter Robinson

What a joke of a company, I for one will not be purchasing any EA titles in the future if this is the sort of ass-clownery we can expect from them. Sort this BS out EA!

  • http://twitter.com/_JAPSCAT Joey

“EA Challengae in everything” Only 90′s kids will know. Now everything EA touches becomes a pile of dirt. Also if you release a friggin game don’t you want more servers than predicted, not everyone buys the game on release.. So more people will be trying to play everyday. I don’t get that in this era, it is possible for like 40 years we can travel to the fukin moon , but can’t release a game properly ever. I will gladly applaud the first company that can get a release done with only minor isseus. Having full servers is just a lack of interest to be fairly honest. You should somewhat know how many pre-orders there are. And how many people want to play your game by an educated guess. And then as I said before think of extra space for people who don’t buy the game on release. EA seriously ruined things the past decade.

messy as hell, the launch, the post launch news/updates.
why does this happen to games i like?

WTF about the thing, don’t we get a refund if the product doesn’t work at all ?

  • http://twitter.com/BalsBigBrother Bals Big Brother

Would the distance selling regulations in the UK trump EA’s policy on refunds for this game?

They basically state that a person has seven day cooling off period to request a refund on any item sold over the internet and purchaser does not need to give any reason or have a problem with the item sold. Might be worth a try if you are in the UK and want a refund, maybe

    • http://www.facebook.com/thelethrface Steven Opie Wallace

I don’t think it does because you sign a binding agreement prior to even purchasing the product from Origin by way of creating an account.  If you bought it from a different retailer, the answer could possibly be different.

    • T3ardrop

Under the EU law you are entitled to a refund if a product you bought isn’t working or you decided that you don’t want it (in that case product must be returned unused). I’ve bought Battlefield 3 from the Origin 4 weeks ago and realized that I bought the wrong version. I requested a refund and received it. I know that things are different in the US, but here in Europe the EU takes care of customer rights. If you request a refund for nt working product you’re entitled to a refund.

  • http://twitter.com/Deadalon Deadalon

Not offering refunds is just unbelievable.  I dont care what the EULA and contracts say.  And it doesn’t matter if it’s a game or some other software.  If it aint working then the customer has every right to return the product.  If EA is really gonna try to push this… they will get even more bad rep that will do so much damage to their future.

PPL are paying up to 80$ for this “game”.  The service that EA is reliable for providing is not working.  If it will be fixed later does not matter.  PPL did not buy this game on launch to play later.  EA acting like they are not accountable for whats going on is disgraceful.

I was very interested in SimCity.  But I have been burned before on always online DRMs that have backend server service.  I will never buy those games again.  EA reactions to this issue and refusal of refunds also make it very straight forward that I will not be buying any EA games.  Cause you simply do not reward a company for doing things like this.

All we can really hope for is that the real good developers of the future are taking note and will not be signing up with EA.

    • http://www.facebook.com/thelethrface Steven Opie Wallace

I hate to play the logic card here but what they are doing isn’t infringing on any single person’s rights. Not a single customer who pays for a product (having to digitally sign an agreement from the very beginning) is entitled to the right for a refund because they have already waived their right for said refund prior to finding out the product was broken.  They are fully within the bounds of law to refuse refunds based on EULA and contracts as that is why they are created in the first place so they can protect their own interest.  The only thing they are doing wrong is they are making their already poor reputation even worse and they don’t care because people will still buy their products.

People need to get smarter about the whole customer entitlement argument though and probably read those contracts they sign before checking those boxes that they read and AGREE to the agreement.

      • http://twitter.com/Deadalon Deadalon

I did not accept anything like that cause I did not touch the game when I saw the always online DRM.

But… I bought a Anti-virus software few weeks back that did not do the job to my liking.  It included not working with few games and not updating correctly.  I had signed a contract but I still contacted the company and got full refund within 2 hours.

EULA does not mean a company can do whatever they want.  And even if they did… they will always be marked for their anti-consumer stand.  Thats what is now facing EA … not just for one game – but for every single game they will publish from now on.  If the company cared about their reputation – they would refund players.  If players dont get refunded – they can still contact their bank and stop the transaction that way.  If they loose other games on their Origin account that way?   Thats a good way for players to tell EA that this is not acceptable.

        • http://www.facebook.com/thelethrface Steven Opie Wallace

You can argue morality vs legality but the moment you sign up for an Origin account, you are bound by their agreements when purchasing from their store.

          • http://www.facebook.com/rasmus.nielsen.75491 Rasmus Nielsen

Should be noted, EULA’s that infringe on consumer rights are not valid in courts, atleast not in europe they’re not, if they do not meet basic consumer laws, their EULA can go F itself, and they have to reimburse.

          • http://www.facebook.com/thelethrface Steven Opie Wallace

Then people need to take them to court because as much of BS as I think it is, this is the reason I never buy from their store (or retailers other than Gamestop for that matter since they have a return policy).

          • http://twitter.com/Deadalon Deadalon

Yes – I think thats what ppl are learning here.  Never buy from Origin.  That on its own should be enough for EA to refund unless they are gonna be sitting up with very expensive service that very few are using.

I will never buy from Origin for other reasons.  Namely that half of EU was not eligible for buying SWTOR on Origin store for first 6 months.  Origin classed those countries as second class and were supposed to be fillers when SWTOR servers started to loose players.

That on its own shows the lack of basic consumer rights that is going on with EA and Origin.  Something I will never support.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000894960946 Corey Madden

which is why the EULA states no refunds unless applicable laws apply for your country of residency.

  • http://twitter.com/LiamRdsn Talos

Is this just Sim City but online?

  • http://twitter.com/QuietNine Quiet

After the launch of the colossal failure that was Diablo 3, which was in part because of the always online requirement, why would ANY other developer of a popular single player game come out and do the SAME thing? It is NOT about DRM and making sure people dont pirate the game. Its about keeping them online, connected to stupid in-game stores.

It’s like telling gamers the game they used to enjoy playing in their living room can now only be played inside of 7-11 so that they are more likely to buy a butterfinger, but then not letting them play at all because the 7-11 is full for a month at launch. Thats how stupid these always online requirements are.

    • http://twitter.com/Deadalon Deadalon

Why other publishers are doing it?  Cause D3 sold 12 million copies.  So ofc we will see others try to do the same with big name sequels.  Hopefully SimCity will stop any future releases like that.

  • Gabby Goblin

This past week has been a busy time for game companies.  First, Blizzard pushes out the handicap, who just as recently as January of this year was boasting about how the disabled are able to play their game (in addition to Ben Shaw back in September 2012) and now EA releases a game that is unplayable by many, requires always online even though their large-print system requirements on the website doesn’t include that information, and now refuses refunds – in most cases.
Game companies are turning into the smarmiest organizations.  Move aside credit card companies and mortgage sharks, there’s a new jerk in town (some hyperbole mixed with a lot of truth).
