Final Fantasy XI Is The Most Profitable In The Franchise

Final Fantasy 7 is arguably one of the most memorable games of all time. Add to this a CGI feature-length movie, a short anime, 2 mobile games, 7 short stories, and 2 game spin offs, and it easily earns the title as the biggest sell-out game in video game history.

That’s why it comes as a surprise today to find out that Final Fantasy XI is the most profitable game in the franchise to date! After over a decade, Final Fantasy XI is still going strong with gamers tallying a total play time of over 200,000 years!

With figures like that it’s no wonder the game is prepping for yet another expansion.

But is the release of this statistic surfacing now to help numb the pain over the departure of Producer Hiromichi Tanaka? With his talent he had worked on titles like Final Fantasy 1, 2, and 3, Xenogears, and Chrono Cross. And while Final Fantasy 14‘s battle planner Akihiko Matsui will take his place on FFXI, it does raise some concerns, as his talent will be greatly missed.

Honestly, I don’t see this expansion as adding much to the game for two major reasons.

1 – The last 3 Abyssea addons added a system called Anima into the game that only works in Abyssea zones. These are basically zone-wide buffs that you can acquire and use up to 3 of them at a time. They were intended to speed up the slow paced combat and make your character feel incredibly powerful in these zones, which it did, but now, unless they come up with some ridiculous lore reason why you are suddenly able to use these powers in the expansion you will suddenly feel incredibly weak in comparison.

2 – The level cap is already 99. It does not make much sense to extend that further for a Final Fantasy game. This causes the feeling of zero progression unless they add more alternate advancement points to the jobs.

This results in the only reason to buy or play this expansion is to grind out yet more ultimate job specific weapons and armor sets or to play the two new, most likely niche, jobs.

       Two words. Gear progression.

      • Dustin Duda

I have a hard time seeing how any kind of gear they add could make up for the insane anima buffs.

        • http://twitter.com/Dan_Fix Dan Fix

It’s Atma and Abyssea is like every other event now. Do it when you need stuff and that’s about it. I have no problem doing any of the new content since Abyssea. They have also made adjustments so it does not feel like such a step down in regular zones now too.

As far as atma buffs go, have you seen some of the Emperian armor stats? They are crazy good and that’s not even the newest/best gear anymore.

    • http://twitter.com/c4codydennis Cody Dennis

I’m guessing you mean atma. No one has cared about abyssea and it’s atma for awhile. Voidwatch has been the main event for a year or close to, they made atmacite for it as well. Having atma or not will not matter in the least. Atma is simply a buff you could just as easily put on gear. It’s just easier, development-wise, to put the multitude of buffs, as an option on a menu. If gear is attractive and will make people more powerful, people will play.

Second job actually is announced the day after Geomancer – its Rune Fencer; a tank class that specializes in magic defense.  So we have Paladin – phys. def, Ninja for evasion tanking, and Rune Fencer for magic defense specialization.  That brings the class total up to 22.

Additional details on the expansion are sparse, but include:
    - Geomancer and Rune Fencer jobs

    - new continent in the far west, with a focus on exploration and reclaiming the land and making it suitable for adventure. Building outposts and helping raising the overall cultivation % is an example of something to do.

    - Player island farms that players can use to have a small farm for themselves

    - Dungeons that players unlock by finding parts of statues and assembling them. Dungeon contents and rewards are based on the parts used to assemble the statue.

    - Full campaign and story (each expansion has had amazing story content, very excited)

    - UI improvements. For a game that launched in 2002 on the PS2 (in japan), and was ported to windows later, this is huge.  I nearly fell off my seat when they started showing off movable UI elements.

    - Monster vs Player PvP system.  It may come out before the expansion in an update, but this is cool because FFXI has been primarily all PVE with some stand alone PvP that was just a side category with no rewards.  This is going to have structured rewards systems and players will be able to assume the role of monsters (including iconic ones like the Behemoth monsters) to face players in the field, or other monsters if they wish.

I haven’t played FFXI for an extended length of time in years, but as a former veteran of the game they sure are making it hard not to come back to Vana’diel.  I’ll need to check it out for sure.

While this will be the first expansion with all new mobs, zones, and dungeons it has only been a few weeks since there has been new content in general. Since Wings of The Goddess there have been 3 mini scenarios, Abyssea, Voidwatch, Limbus revamps, Nyzul isle revamps, Einherjar revamps and now there is a new dungeon called Legion.

There are a ton of things for returning players to do, not to mention the level cap increase from the original 75 to 99 and new job specific armor, and Empyrean weapons.

There is just simply too much content to list for new or returning players, years worth. My suggestion, pick it up and try it for yourself.

I know a lot of people that are ANGRY saying how ff7 will make a lot of money. This is another reinforcing piece of evidence that a good mmo with a good loyal player base, (ff11 didnt embrace f2p!) is still more profitable than a game that was a huge hit like ff7 and ff10.

BTW: ff10 is loved more in ff7 in Japan. In fact, ff7 didnt even make the list past the favorite games behind the DQ series, ff4 and ff6. So I would hazard a guess that the spinoff and movie for ff7 were for an western audience, where the game was popular.

I’m confused, if FFXI is so profitable, why hasn’t there been a content update in so long?  Or have they been releasing content patches every now and then but not an expansion?  Doesn’t make much sense to not provide content to a game that made the company this much money, they would have made even more money these last 6 years doing that, right?

    • http://twitter.com/Dan_Fix Dan Fix

There has been a steady stream of content every year in FFXI just been a while since a whole new expansion with new jobs, areas etc.

    • http://twitter.com/lovelyweapon JessICA

There have been what SE called “Mini Expansions” which were a new set of missions with a nice gear reward at the end, as well as all three Abyssea expansions which added a ton of content – in fact, the majority of the casual player base is still working on getting items and gear from Abyssea zones. We also get updates every couple of months, usually along with a bit of new armor and a new event.

XIV flopped, there were devteam change-outs, then there was that whole japan relief effort thing (just to name a few… “hurdles”). All the while, there were miniature DLCs released.

I played FFXI for 6 years and had over 700 days of logged game time.  Wish the game was still worth playing, but abyssea ruined this game for me and all of my linkshell/friends.  If SE opened a server without abyssea I’d instantly re-sub.  FFXI was imo the best MMO ever.  With abyssea it’s trash.

    • http://twitter.com/Dan_Fix Dan Fix

If abyssea ruined the game for you, now is the time to come back. Abyssea is pretty much old content now and the only reason you would have to enter is to level cap and get Empy armor/weapons. Other than that it’s really not useful for anything. All of the older content like Nyzul, Einherjar, Limbus and Dynamis has all been revamped and raised for 99 cap. There is also Voidwatch and Legion that have been added which is pretty challenging for unprepared players.

thats great to hear but outdated gameplay and graphics cant go back and this is from a 6 year vet of the game with 10 mill gil and like 10+ char over 75 lol just cant do it …. but dont get me wrong i loved my time there and wont forget it sometimes i wish i could go back and then i log in and see the graphices and gameplay and just cant do it … after playing gw2 i think they have a chance of recreating the experiences i had on ff11.. fingers crossed

    • http://www.facebook.com/ashestoashes.guild.7 Ashes To Ashes Guild

Totally Agree with you its amazing more dont see it this way first 5-6 years of ffxi was the greatest wth did they figure making game easymode equates to better…

  • http://twitter.com/lovelyweapon JessICA

It’s atma buffs. Also, all the new content since Abyssea has awesome gear and it’s all outside the Abyssea zones.

Oops, meant this in reply to Dustin Duda!

FF VII the “biggest sell out game in history”? Wouldn’t that be something like…I don’t know…maybe Mario Brothers?? :)

I just reactive my FFXI account a few days ago. I cant wait for this expansion. hope it brings back old school exp partys

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joao-Vicente/100000881627920 João Vicente

It does not surprise me one bit its the most profitable.

Look at it. You pay for it every single month. In 5/6 months you payed the price of a full other FF game. and you keep paying. You pay for multiple chars and other things (or did in the past if i remember it right).

Its been out for so long… makes sense its the one who made the most money. and will keep being that.

Great thin is, GW2 is B2P with no monthly fee. I’m playing both!

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shawna-Daniels/1135007726 Shawna Daniels

That is true, but I find it impossible to give 100% effort to 2 games at the same time. I’ll be playing GW2 seven thousand hours per week, just no time for FFXI!

        • http://www.facebook.com/ashestoashes.guild.7 Ashes To Ashes Guild

@shawna i totally agree GW2  will also take all my time up  easily i played XI for 6 years straight from beta when it was actually hard and challenging not the easy mode it is today.. and enjoyed my time there but there comes a time when u must move on. after wings of goddess couldnt take it anymore. honestly the game hit peak with chains of promethia best expansion ever imo after that steady decline.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shawna-Daniels/1135007726 Shawna Daniels

I played FFXI for about 6 years as well, I quit sometime after WotG when the mini-expansions started coming out, right before Abyssea came out.
CoP was great, simply getting to “sea” and then completing it to get the ring was one of my best gaming accomplishments. I think it literally took like 2 years for me to get that ring.
See you in GW2… been playing the GW2 betas on the Steamspur Mountains server.

People says More MMO’s should be more like WoW.. But i say More MMO’s should be more like FFXI. You go through content in a short period of time in WoW and people get bored and QQ… it takes a LONG time to go through content in FFXI and people never get bored or QQ if the content is to hard. So the real question is whos doing it right??

Honestly, I’m not excited for the new expansion or its jobs. It just seems like they threw in a new job and slapped on the Geomancer title to pander to the community. The only thing I’ll be looking forward to are the new zones and the new art it will bring to the game.

  • http://twitter.com/c4codydennis Cody Dennis

Yes this is the first major expansion in a while but it’s not the first bit of new content in 6 years. “Expansion” in FFXI means addition to the world. Since WOTG, there’s been abyssea which provided TONS to do for a solid 3 years. It made it possible to play multiple jobs without having to grind needlessly for months. It really gave life to the game and was really linkshell oriented. That’s when the level cap first raised from level 75. After Abyssea came Voidwatch. The beginning of voidwatch was really fun and competitive. The reward rate for Voidwatch is horrid, however. Trying to buy time to release these “upgrades” to previous content, it is not uncommon to hear stories of fighting multiple monsters 300+ times without getting the item they were after. It is a good strategy to milk current content until the update is released. FFXI players, above anything, have proven to be masochists. It’s caused a stale frustration and these “upgraded” older events aren’t offering much to seek after. Nyzul Isle offers great rewards, but it is the one event that skill alone can’t get you a win. You have to hope and rely on luck. Einherjar and Limbus updates bring up a question I really can’t get over. You have existing gear. You introduce new gear. The new gear is inferior to your existing gear. Why would people spend time going after something when there’s better items out there? It will be a very stale run for ffxi players until this expansion comes out.

I’ve yet to see any FF game that hasn’t bored me shitless

  • http://twitter.com/viion Josh Freeman

I play it time to time,

while there has been no major expansion there have been several mini expansions or “addons” as they put it, which have been kind of over prised imo, 6 of them $10 each. All of them pretty much recycle old content and just put you into another “time frame” lol.

Additionally lots of quarterly updates, i think they do a big patch every 3-4 months (like swtors 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc..)

  • DoctorOverlord

Of course it’s more grossly profitable than FFVII. FFVII isn’t sub-based.  FFXI is a subscription based MMO and not a horrible mess.  Subs rake in the profits.  That’s why single player games are trying to follow the sub model and why old pre-WoW MMOs have been able to last for so long even with their niche market. And also why Blizzard can afford giant bronze statues of orcs lol

  • http://twitter.com/Blitzer87 Bob

This is the first time I have read something here and face palmed at the lack of knowledge on your guys part. Tanaka leaving is an AMAZING thing and many people will agree. Matsui was the one in charge back in the abyssea days which pretty much revived FFXI for MANY MANY people. After Tanaka took back over again it just went down hill.

Why was Tanaka gone from FFXI for that year? FFXIV…and that obviously went well. So well they stuck him back on FFXI. Well that didn’t last well either.

So again, Tanaka leaving = Amazing thing for players and community. Matsui actually listened to test server / player suggestions.

  • RolyVento

I would play it again if there NO monthly fees.
