Mechromancer Skill Reveal Stirs Trouble
45 Comments

With the release of Borderlands 2 fast approaching, Gearbox has released more information on the brand spakin’ new Mechromancer class coming with the games post-launch DLC pack.

With her robo-arm and cyberpunk pigtails, she’s been one of the most intriguing new additions to the franchise. Her core skill is her ability to summon her own heavily modified Claptrap-eque robotic minion, Deathtrap.

In an interview with eurogamer, lead designer John Hemingway detailed the still in development skill trees that the Mechromancer is rocking.
The tree put on display was called “Best Friends Forever.”

Hemingway said of the Mechromancer and her talent design:

“The design team was looking at the concept art and thought, you know what, this is actually the cutest character we’ve ever had. I want to make, for the lack of a better term, the girlfriend skill tree. This is, I love Borderlands and I want to share it with someone, but they suck at first-person shooters. Can we make a skill tree that actually allows them to understand the game and to play the game? That’s what our attempt with the Best Friends Forever skill tree is.”

The mechromancer brings a set of skills to the table that allow less skilled people become a more functional part of multiplayer co-op and have more fun in single player mode. Can’t hit the broadside of a barn with a cannon? No problem! One of the first talents in the tree is called Close Enough, that allows bullets that miss your targets to have a chance to ricochet off walls and objects towards your enemies.

Hemingway also said he wants to use one of her other skill trees to act as a counterbalance to the “easy mode” BFF tree:

“Right now, I’m thinking of it as a hardcore mode. So if you are a really expert player, and you want to do some tricky, difficult things, this is the tree for you, for just a totally different experience. We’re not ready to talk about it, because we have no idea if it’s even going to pan out. But we’ve got some interesting ideas there.”

All in all the Mechromancer sounds like a solid addition to the lineup of characters we all know and love. I personally can’t wait to play the hell out of Borderlands 2, the Mechro is a big part of my excitement.

I wish that was where I could end this article, and usually it would be. However, the eurogamer interview has triggered some nasty reactions from the public.

The fuss is over Mr. Hemingway calling the BFF tree “girlfriend mode.”  There have been accusations of sexism and gender stereotyping on the part of Mr. Hemingway.

In this writers opinion, those claims are false. Contextually there was no malice behind what was said by Mr. Hemingway, when I first read the “girlfriend mode” anecdote, I laughed and thought it was kind of cute. I understood what he was saying, as I think most calm and logical people did. The BFF tree helps you share your gaming love with someone special. Doesn’t matter if they are male or female, your girlfriend/boyfriend, friend, parent, sibling.

The president of Gearbox Software, Randy Pitchford has come to the defence of Mr. Hemingway saying:

“I’m sure Hemmingway is getting noogied now, but not his fault. A personal anecdote has been twisted and dogpiled on by sensationalists. Fun!

There is no universe where Hemmingway is a sexist – all the women at Gearbox would beat his and anyone else’s ass.”

Mr. Pitchford, you are an awesome boss. I sincerely hope that the reaction to the comments made by Mr Hemingway do not impact his standing with Gearbox.

I’ll leave you guys with a positive note. The brand new Borderlands 2 Handsome Jack trailer dropped. It is awesome and you should watch it. The Mechromancer DLC pack is expected to drop 60 days after launch. Let us know what you think about the new Borderlands 2 info.pc games GIRLFRIEND MODE!

so will it be OP if someone that isn’t a nub will play on a boosted char

Why is it immediately offensive to make a joke about a long running joke in the gaming community?

All the female gamers I’ve been playing with for the past four years make more “grrls suk at gaems” jokes than the rest of their male friends put together.  In fact, most of those jokes I’ve heard came from them.  And all those ladies are solid, skilled players.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tj-Vossos/647768691 Tj Vossos

yes but its ok for girls to make these jokes, its like making a racial joke its ok for a black guy to make black guy jokes, but if a white guy does it he is racist

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/ITHF7XKYGVXFAPCDMDJTKHLBBU Lian Wan

because there are many people who like to think they are better than other people and this is a low hanging fruit that is “proof” that they are better.

  • http://twitter.com/Seraph1337 Rush#1976

the problem isn’t that there was some sort of malice behind Hemingway saying “girlfriend mode” – it’s that we live in a society where it’s okay for him to say something like that despite it stereotyping and alienating many women who play video games as all being bad at it. there are women who pride themselves on their gaming skills every bit as much as some men do – and they’re basically being told that if they are a girlfriend, they are obviously not good at video games. how is this okay?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matthew-Guillemette/100000971394220 Matthew Guillemette

I believe you missed the point of the joke and the explanation in the article….I may not be able to speak for the female gamers but I do know that the majority of the gamers are male, and always has been. Lots of those guys have girlfriends and games that are a part of their life, and they want to sort of combine the two (i.e. show the girlfriend his favorite game). Therein lies the joke that many gamers who have girlfriends like to have their girlfriends try out their games. It is in no way specific to gender, as you could translate it women who game like to show their boyfriends, or any gender to any significant other…

Honestly, the only way you could make this offensive is if YOU DECIDE to make it some sort of personal attack against women.

    • Old Ben

      >  the problem [...] it’s that we live in a society where
      >  it’s okay for him to say something like that

No, the problem is that we live a society that wastes more energy worrying about this kind of nonsensical “issue” than doing anything about its real problems.

      > alienating many women who play
      > video games as all being bad at it

He didn’t call it “woman mode”. The “girl” part of “girlfriend mode” is just statistical (because there will be more guys asking their girlfriends to play with them than girls asking their boyfriends to play with them). The term “girlfriend mode” just means “a mode designed to make the game more playable by someone who wouldn’t really play it on their own”.

      > they’re basically being told that if they are a girlfriend,
      > they are obviously not good at video games

If the only reason why they’re playing is to hang around with their boyfriend, that is probably true. Same as a “best friend” would be (hence the term “BFF mode”).

If and when they become more interested in the game, play more, and gain more experience, they will probably stop being interested in those skills. The game doesn’t force them to pick them.

I think the Olympics shouldn’t have separate male and female events because that’s like suggesting that women aren’t good enough to compete against men. Oh, and I want the right to have babies, and I want to be called Loretta.

      • Deathstar2x

        Well said, Loretta.

So that’s two Lorettas. Anyone else?

  • http://twitter.com/Seraph1337 Rush#1976

that’s called “internalized misogyny” dude. they hear it all the time, so to fit in with “the guys”, they often feel like they need to make the same jokes so they don’t get lumped in with the stereotypical woman gamer that isn’t very good at games. this doesn’t make it okay.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/FPXO267IVAHL3MK4HRRNRQPNDA Bush Swanson, The American Dre

they’re not called midgets. they’re called halfsies.

  • SevenFold

I think its cool that they’re adding this “significant other” skill tree, I love playing with the wife but she isn’t the best at fps. was obviously a slip up and not meant to sexist.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Angelica-Sarvo/100000523071070 Angelica Sarvo

I played Borderlands a few years ago with my boyfriend (now husband) and his best friend and it was my first fps game. But I wasn’t so bad at it that I needed something to make the game easier for me. It was still loads of fun and I got better at the game as I kept playing. I only stopped playing because the game stopped saving my progress so I’d lose hours worth of game play and I got frustrated.

As for calling it a girlfriend mode, I don’t really find it funny but I’m not all too bothered by it. However, what I am curious about is that would this mode give the experience gamer an advantage? Or would they make it so that the benefits it gives not appeal to the experience gamer?

    • Kagitaar

What a coincidence, I had a similar experience with the game, just with me in the best friend slot. I’m 99% sure that the benefits you gain will be weaker, if not significantly weaker, than speccing in the other trees. To add to that, in the article Hemingway mentions that one of the other trees will be ‘hardcore’, giving significant benefits to skilled players.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/ITHF7XKYGVXFAPCDMDJTKHLBBU Lian Wan

From the description of “Close Enough” it sounds like a really good player might be able to shoot around corners with it. I don’t think there is anything wrong with having skills that are easy/simple to use but hard to master.

  • Vince Ludovico

The way I see it is he didn’t call it girl mode. Girlfriend mode takes me back in the day before I was married when I used to play games and my girlfriend would watch. I wanted to get her into games, but they were simply too hard (opinion) for someone with no gaming experience. Back then, there either wasn’t as many girl gamers, or they just weren’t advertising it like they do now.

Seems more like that feminazi group going far out of the way looking for a fight.  Words don’t hurt and you can’t change stupid.

  • http://www.facebook.com/fimbulvetrr Dovah Kiin

Another bunch of feminazis whining over nothing, why dont they go do something usefull, like fighting for actual womens rights instead of bawling over some misconstrude nonsense.

Haven’t seen this much crying since the hitman trailer.

Just another case of over-sensitive people over-reacting to an offhanded comment made 1,000s of miles away and not even directed at them.

I’m sure that tomorrow morning, much like the “Chickfila Kiss-in”, there are going to be dozens of girlfriend gamers sitting outside of GBX Studios, in Dallas, playing Borderlands? Hah.

  • AlexLive

These kind of stories are just the product of cheap, sensationalist journalism and I think it’s sad Randy Pitchfork had to defend such an innocuous comment.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1123972011 Curtis Dalton

Hm…. I gotta say I don’t like the sounds of this, I’m sure it’s not as bad as our minds are going to but I really hope some of those skills are cut back in QA.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_P4HMCB2HFGNQRRKG5SO33L5LCQ Age Of Majority

What a bunch of crap. I say we rename it Super feminazi bitch mode, and we make an identical mode called Ball-less boyfriend bitchslappin mode. I’d rather have all more than nothing.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/ITHF7XKYGVXFAPCDMDJTKHLBBU Lian Wan

That naming scheme seems pretty close to the Borderlands style

  • http://www.facebook.com/tony.golightly Tony Golightly

i like how she chocked on admitting the “girls suck at video games” thing is a actual sterotype.

it’s a stereotype, we all know it, you’re a reporter, admit it. confront it, move on with it. it was relevant for your article.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=727587287 Blake Morris

its not the fact that women are bad at video games compared to men, its the fact that alot of gamers girlfriends DONT play videogames so this mode is a way to get them into it.  ugh. its a meme you jerks!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nae-Bodee/100002134184112 Nae Bodee

This, nobody gives a damn what it’s called. It’s just a matter of fact that the MAJORITY of girlfriends don’t compare to their counterpart on the same game.

    • Jay

Yeah, guys usually choose looks over whether or not a girl is a gamer… I know I do.

Not that personality isn’t important too :3

  • http://www.facebook.com/azee.senjin Azee Sen’jin

what about the “midgets with shotguns” comment? nice reporting =P

    • http://www.facebook.com/joseph.fiol Joseph Giovanni Fiol

“midget” is regarded as offensive to those with dwarfism by both the Restricted Growth Association (UK based support network for people of profound short-stature) and the Little People of America (the American support network)

Way to girlfriend mode the segment Carina!!!

  • http://twitter.com/dee3eep Dustin Peacock

Why is this news and why do people care so much? A waste of Gamebreaker’s frontpage headline in my opinion.

  • uardin

I think “girlfriend mode” is offensive. Seeing as how it’s only one guys poor word choice and probable internalized misogyny, and not the actual studio naming the skill tree girlfriend mode it’s not a big deal. I like the idea of a skill tree that is easier on newer/less skilled players, just not the idea of tying it to a specific gender.

I just really hope they make the mechromancer interesting and fun as currently I’m having a problem figuring out what character I want to play in Borderlands 2. Zer0 seems to be the only character that everyone in my circle wants to play as (including myself).

  • http://www.facebook.com/neal.reagan Neal Reagan

I agree with uardin a little bit. However, I believe Hemingway said “girlfriend mode” on purpose, perhaps because he feels the same way we do about it. And in order to bring to light the inherent controversy in having a mode that promoted easier game play, he said the best thing he could have. But to assume he didn’t mean to say it, is a little naïve. The guy works as a game designer for this game, which is to say that he is intimately involved in the direction of game play, and character progression. Assuming he made the girlfriend statement without explicit authority to do so, he’d still be one hell of an ignorant game designer. No, Mike B: He did this on purpose. And I believe he did it carte blanche.

Someone else in the studio is as mad about this game mode as we are. Thus the controversy :D

  • Draugmahl

Oh wah to everyone crying about this. The statement “girlfriend mode” has NOTHING to do with “girls being bad gamers”. The imagery of a guy trying to get his girlfriend to play, but she won’t because she’s not a gamer, thus is not very good at them…that’s the whole point. It could have been called the “noob best friend mode” and meant the same thing…reading more into it makes you a giant bitch, a gender-neutral bitch of course…

    • Jay

Tell us how you really feel… o.0

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kyle-Rogers/100000222205677 Kyle Rogers

I agree with Draugmahl below…too many times in my past did i set and try to get my girlfriend/wife to set and play an xbox game with me, only for her to tell me “no, she didnt like them; they were too hard; she didnt understand them” blah blah blah…bunch of over-sensitive people freaking out over NOTHING!

  • 1970Hendrix1970

The term girlfriend mode was an obvious joke and not anti femanist in the least. Considering it is mostly true, any flack is likely from nerd boys “white knighting” extra hard. Why is it women have no problem pointing out how guys suck at expressing their feelings or saying we have certain deficiencies in a joking manner  yet if a man does the same we are suddenly at war with their equality.

People need a sense of humor and the statement he made may be stereotypical but it is stereotypical in a way that is not harmful to anyone. Please show me the women that is sitting in her bed crying herself to sleep over this comment and I will show you one emotionally disturbed wacko…

No one is demeaned by this comment in the least. This comment is the equivalent of me saying most 30 plus gammers reminice over arcade games that suck like pacman, or supermodels shove their finger down their throat….are those things sterotypical…yes….funny…. yes…true….in many cases, and thats why it is funny.

There is a clear difference between a joke ment to point out the stupid things we do as people  and someone trying to opress a social group. People need to stop trying to turn their social group into the “next minority” and take themselves less seriously ….(I swear if I hear another jackass make the “It’s like the civil rights movement” analogy when speaking of some assinine thing that is nothing like the civil rights movement in scope or pivitol weight I think i will throw up) “don’t opress me bro” needs to be the catch all for this latest generation…. Every time you turn around another comedian is being called a racist or a women hater for a joke or somone on the internet is being called out for blue humor…..

If what you want is a society where we are all politically correct automatons then great keep stearing it that way….I like tolerence as much as the next guy and abhore hate speach but removing all sense of humorous ribbing and striking it down as bullying is equivalent to the removal of our freedom of speach and that is 180 degrees in the wrong direction. People need to be able to express themselves outside of how they dress or the sexual orientation of the person they shag. Giving creedence to a hypersensitive culture is not progressive it is paranoid.

I dont think the joke was, “Chicks suck at games.” Its based on the age-old, everyones got that “girlfriend” that wants to play with her man, but knows nothing about games. Thankfully, my gf was a gamer long before I showed up, lol.

exactly. but of course that point will be lost under the harumphing .

Who the hell cares what uptight feminists think?

The world they are creating is disgusting and evil.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1260066056 Steven Diaz

This is as sexist as me sitting down to do number 1.  (I’m a guy)  Ignorant, overly sensitive individuals making a big deal out of something that they refuse to actually understand.  It’s so ignorant and illogical that I don’t even understand how anyone would even bother reporting on it.  You know what’s actually sexist?  The fact that there’s one bathroom near the office and it’s for females while there are two other bathrooms on the floor below.  So guys have to go downstairs to go to the bathroom and you know what?  I don’t complain because it isn’t a serious issue.  I want women fighting for equal pay for doing the same jobs as men for example.  What I DON’T want to see is women trying to make men conform to their standards, men are different than women and that’s OK.  We think differently, we don’t have as much malice as as “feminists” would have you think.  New generation feminists have RUINED the feminist movement, they’ve slowly turned it into a joke.  What you have now are overly sensitive women reading too deeply into things, looking for hidden meanings that have no relation to what’s actually going on.  You have man-haters yelling sexist in the name of feminism.  It’s disgusting.  They’ve managed to trivialize a powerful movement that was meant to empower women, not make them look like emotional messes looking for attention.  The exact same stereotype that they want gone.  See the issue here?

  • http://twitter.com/Sidenorna Sidenorna

People these days are looking for reasons to be offended. AMG he called it girl friend mode, he is a sexist pig that needs to be burnt at the stake..Wait, an off the cuff remark does not make someone’s character let alone that of the company they work for. In this world and these days, people will be offended for whatever reason they want to be offended, and they will be offended by who ever they want to be offended by.  The only way to not offend anyone is by saying nothing and even then that may offend someone.
