Valve co-founder describes worst Half-Life movie idea ever
It’s not surprising Hollywood wants to make a Half-Life movie, but one idea recently revealed by Gabe Newell is facepalm worthy.
In one of his two debuts at the Nerdist podcast, Newell, managing director of Valve Corporation, commented on some of the ideas Hollywood has pitched to Valve for a Half-Life movie: “There really were people who came to us with proposals of, ‘Okay, imagine this, it’s Half-Life 1, and there are horses, and it’s a cavalry charge, and it’s like high-tech carbon armor on the horses,’ and we’re like, ‘What the f*** are you talking about? Have you even played this?’”
It’s hard to imagine anyone approaching Valve and seriously making that proposal for a Half-Life movie. Then again, a lot of people would probably watch it just to witness the train wreck.
Fortunately, some good did come out of the horrible Half-Life movie ideas, Newell said: “Part of the reason we started Source Filmmaker was that the ideas were so terrible.”
While a Half-Life movie isn’t in the works, Newell said an in-house, 15-minute Team Fortress 2 film is coming.
In the podcasts, which are worth listening to in their entirety, Newell explained Valve approaches public relations as a “dance.” While many companies still foolishly try to “control the message” on the Internet, Valve sees it as a more collaborative effort. They try to be honest with fans, and they assume fans are intelligent as an aggregate.
Newell also shared his vision for making all gaming accessible through multiple platforms. He said there is no reason customers should resist more accessibility to games and save files. The only reason the concept isn’t more mainstream is companies like Apple want to fully control their own marketplaces, according to Newell.
The podcasts also cover a variety of topics, including Valve’s corporate structure, how ideas are vetted within the company, and Newell’s vision for making Steam more integrated and comprehensive.
