The Yogscast Is Developing A Game Like Minecraft, Only Not

Apparently The Yogscast guys feel it’s time to create their own game.

One that has all the features they’ve always wanted — or that we, as players, want.

In order to make this happen, Lewis and Simon have enlisted the help of some friends at Winterkewl Games to help them out.  Yogventures will be Winterkewl’s first game, but the team is made up of game and film company vets, so they’re up to the challenge.

The game will have blocks, and mines, and crafting — much like another game we know.  It will include characters from the Yogscast shows.  Players will have control over everything in game, including NPCs and mobs.

The project will allow backers to be involved from the beginning.  Starting at the $25 level, backers will be given access to a forum that will allow them input into how the game is designed.

Lewis and Simon admit that they’re not developers, so it will be interesting to see how a game based around their ideas and made with the input of other random gamers will come out.

It does look like they have a solid developer team on their side and so far, the concept art is beautiful.

Simon apologized to Notch on twitter saying he was just excited and he didn’t mean anything by it. And notch replied saying it’s no problem and that he hopes the game is a success.
In terms of how i feel about it, I’m kinda on the fence about it, I think if anything it is the same genre as minecraft. I think minecraft will inspire more games like yogventures and terraria and still have each game being unique. I think it is the difference between getting inspiration from a game and outright copying it.

I personally won’t be buy the yogascast game right now, perhaps it it gets funded and developed i would buy it during a steam sale or something. It does look fun and i think they are trying to make a more adventure oriented game.

Good to know. ^_^  We kind of figured it was a joke.  It was just that the tone was a little iffy for one.

And yep.. Definitely the same genre.  It does look very interesting, and I do hope it pans out for them.  Like I said in the video, I do think they’ll get it. Kickstarter funding is a fast start, slow middle, dramatic end kind of thing.

I was watching a game that I didn’t think would make their funding at all.  They hadn’t even gotten completely halfway by the time they had four days left…then… BOOM.. Funded.

Yogventures already has more than half, so I think they’re probably set.

I love the yogscast, huge fan and pretty much watch every video of theirs… However, I am a bit worried about this… ‘idea’ of theirs. Hope it goes well though :D

Also the game might look somewhat minecrafty but I don’t think that that is what they are particularly going for but it may start out like it just because they are familiar with it. They are actually working on a mod box that combines some of the best minecraft mods out there and makes them work with each other so all you have to do is install their mod and you will have tons of amazing features added to your minecraft so I doubt they are going to try and ‘outdo’ that game specifically.

I don’t trust them… no exp in game dev, only some internet voices

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=518607879 Christopher Mitchell

If you read you would know that they are not developing the game themselves, they are working with an actual dev company soooo yeah.

      • http://quintlyn.com/ QuintLyn Bowers

Pretty much this.  And, those devs have some solid credentials in the video game and film industry.  The only place I’d be leery is the whole “let the backers help design the game” thing.

It could be totally fine… IF… They’re very good at saying, “No… That’s not something that can be done.” when it needs to be.  But if they try to put in everything people ask for (or vote for) then it could end up being a hot mess.

They arent making the game themselves, their paying someone else to do it.

why do they act like theyre a bunch of broke asses? i personally find it to be insulting. while it may be true that their moron 11 year old youtube army may not understand how much money theyre making i absolutely do. to be honest they could easily get private funding and using kickstarter is just a copout to get it for free. smart business. the “make your own travel arrangements” is where i got upset.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=518607879 Christopher Mitchell

Well they are not the most successful people in the world and there really is no reason for them to not use kickstarter. That’s why kickstarter is there. And not that I know but ‘make your own travel arrangements’ doesn’t necessarily mean you will have to pay for it just make the arraangements but that may just be me reaching out for an explanation lol.

      • http://www.facebook.com/trose87 T Paul Rose

they are some of the most successful people on youtube. of all time. ever. in the history of the internet and making money with videos. if they wanted to make the game private funding would be no problem and i agree kickstarter is there and like i said its smart business to do it free. but what theyre offering down the line for donors is crap, and the 10k is just insulting. i love yogscast guys, but dont act like they havent got money.

        • Jado Cast

So what?  Tons of company’s including start ups are created on borrowed money by investment banks, venture capitalists, angels, etc.  Even when they have enough to fund the entire project, many company’s still borrow money from investors.  Why risk your own money when you can get investors to pony up, with a risk/reward like any other investment?  The company I work for borrows 100′s of Millions of dollars each year in short term loans we pay back in 90 days with a low interest rate so we can free up our cash flow.  It’s just smart business sense, and I say good for them!

Not to mention why would you privately produce a game when you can have it advertised across the internet with all of the “dastardly” acts they are doing to make you pay for airfair

        • http://twitter.com/Rauil_Lindion Rauil Lindion

just because they have money doesn’t mean it’s “unethical” or anything to ask people for money, people with money can still ask for money, if i was rich with hundreds of thousands of dollars and millions of fans and wanted to make a game I would ask for money to.

    • http://twitter.com/PrimateArms Steve

If you can afford to spend $10,000 on a game you don’t know anything about, you can probably afford to pay your own airfare. You’re paying to have the game developed, not go on holiday.

When you look at a couple of projects on Kickstarter, that travel clause for the 10k rewards seems to be quite common.

Game by Simon and Lewis? *shudder*

  • Theyrealone

If you would give me around 600$ i would make you Diablo 3 Live Streams and Vids when i play.

  • Craig MacFarlane

Hey Mike, Just did a search on Expedia.

Hobart, Tasmania to Bristol, England… $9,500. The US is not the center of the world.

    • iamthemikeb

Nice attitude, but go ahead and just call me the Booker

      Australia $4k
      SFO $2k
      South Africa $2k
      South Korea $3k

Flight from Hobart to Melbourne $300
      :)

Ninja edit: How nice of you to pick the cheapest available flight there.. puu.sh/oYth

Indeed they may have nice and good ideas, but that alone doesn’t make a good game. I’m interested to see where this is going. If it will be a good game or if it will fail.

This game just comes off as a ego-stroke. I love listening to Yogscast, but kickstart is supposed to be for… I dont know… fun games. Not “Hey look at me, Im in a game, hurhur”, kinda games…

    • http://quintlyn.com/ QuintLyn Bowers

I don’t really listen to Yogscast.  But from looking at the Kickstarter page, I feel like this is them actually making a game they want to play and think others might too.   And really… Kickstarter is for anything people decide they want to make.  Luckily, it’s up to the backers as to whether or not they get the money.

  • Sazfex BattleBorn
