Tired of paid DLC? Check out this Skyrim mod, providing all the fun of a paid DLC.
As PC gamers, we’ve long been blessed with the ability to modify our games over our console counterparts. Be it simple modifications like altered items or weapons, brand spanking new character models/skins, right through to brand spanking new games (Hi Counter Strike!). The possibilities truly are endless. Heck, should you want to, you can even download mods to alter the physics of how cheese rolls…I’ll let you take that in for a second.
One of the latest groups looking to add their own mark to the lush, epic landscapes of the Skyrim mod scene is Archon Entertainment, a small rag-tag band of modders with a grand task ahead of them; Luftahraan.
Whats a ‘Luftahraan’?
Formally started in February 2012, Luftahraan is the first Skyrim mod project to come out of Archon Studios since its inception. The vision is simple yet grand; To make a mod that encompasses everything Skyrim can offer; including a brand new city (Apparently 3x the size of Whiterun), quests, story line, custom music, fully voiced NPC’s, the works!
What I think is more enticing about this project is the fact it’s setting itself up as a full blown add-on to the popular fantasy game. The level of detail is certainly akin to the craftsmanship you’d come to expect from a paid Bethesda DLC, but the fact this is a community lead project helps peak my curiosity just that little bit more
For the time being, I’m more than happy to be given pretty images to stare at (check them out below!)…for the time being, being the key phrase here. There’s only so much I can salivate before my metaphoric stomach gets fed up of waiting around. The true test will be when the mod is released into an open beta form and then the question will be; Can a community made project really stand up to the thousands of dollars giants like Bethesda throw at their DLC? and if so, will this ever alter the ways DLC’s are released/priced? We shall see!
Releasing any time soon?
Of course, no mod that attempts such a grand scale project is going to end up being a simple feat. Currently there’s no official release date, so there’s clearly plenty to be done before the mod see’s any form official released. Be sure to keep an eye on it over at Mod DB.
If you want to be one of the first to give this Skyrim mod a whirl, Archon Studios are currently looking for testers, so head on over to their forums too!
