What is going on in this new ArmA 3 ARG? And who is Jerry Hopper?
Over on Reddit and the bistudio forums a new ArmA 3 ARG (Alternate Reality Game) has been discovered. It started when an ArmA 3 gameserver was spotted and the hostname, http://m26.node-42.rv4a3.org/ was revealed. Clicking the link takes you to black and bare bones terminal.
A line of dashes sprints across the screen.
We hear the crackling and spine chilling sound of dial-up internet.
A small block of text displays some numbers and cryptic clues about “Public Laws” and system security.
And then an ominous “login” and flashing cursor pop up as if to say, “Come play?”
Alternate Reality ArmA
If you don’t already know, an ARG is an interactive narrative that generally consists of riddles and wild hunts for information in a ‘real’ game world. It all happens in real time and can span many different platforms. Everything (or almost everything) takes place outside of the video game but is related to game content. The reward? No one knows. Some other well known ARGs have been Halo’s recent Project Blackstone, The Dark Knight’s Why So Serious? ARG, I Love Bees, and Jane McGonigal’s World With Out Oil.
As the ArmA 3 ARG forum states, the block of text gives a ton of information and cryptic clues for us to look at. Forum members there and over on the ArmA 3 reddit are hard at work to decipher what those clues mean and how to proceed.
Already there have been efforts to figure out the login name, attempts at the password, and people have been looking up what the laws and numbers listed might refer to. So far the login name “jerryhopper” seems to be generating the most clues linking to a fake (well, we assume it’s fake) LinkedIn profile. This profile is linked to Bohemia Interactive, the developers of ArmA 3, and might have some clues.
Want to Play A Game?
If you are interested in this new ArmA 3 ARG I suggest you head over to the ArmA 3 reddit page where community members are pooling their efforts to solves the riddles and play the game. There already are a number of posts devoted to collecting information and keeping any and all developments on tap.
So far it is not clear who is the mastermind behind this ARG. We don’t know whether it is a run by some fans or by the ArmA 3 at Bohemia Interactive themselves. Nevertheless it will be interesting to see how this new ARG develops.
Do you think you will play this new ArmA 3 ARG? Have you ever participated in an ARG before? Is this leading up to anything specific or is just for fun? Let us know!
