New Line Studio brings on Portal fan film creator to direct a comic book adaptation.
You may remember a short fan film that went viral last year titled Portal: No Escape. The video, which takes place in the Portal universe begins with a woman waking to find herself imprisoned, with no memory. As should be expected, she does find the portal gun and eventually tries to make her escape.
If you’re not one of the 11-plus million who have watched this fan film, keep in mind that this is not a film of the “GLaDOS and companion cubes are so cute!” variety. In fact, GLaDOS doesn’t make an appearance here at all. I guess she was too busy doing ads for Pacific Rim.
Instead this seven-minute piece is dark and moody, with a musical score to match.
The dark mood of this short film is likely what landed Dan Tractenberg the directing job for Y: The Last Man.
The comic book is similarly dark and lonely. Spanning 60 issues, it tells the story of a man named Yorick and his pet monkey Ampersand. The two are the only survivors of a plague that wiped out all the male mammals in the world.
Judging from the Portal fan film, Tractenberg should have no problem pulling off the dark universe of Y: The Last Man. And, if reports are correct, he will have the benefit of working from a script adaptation done by the writer of the comic book series, Brian K. Vaughan. Vaughan is a popular comic book and television series.
