Portal Fan Film Director Headed To The Big-Screen

New Line Studio brings on Portal fan film creator to direct a comic book adaptation.

You may remember a short fan film that went viral last year titled Portal: No Escape.  The video, which takes place in the Portal universe begins with a woman waking to find herself imprisoned, with no memory.   As should be expected, she does find the portal gun and eventually tries to make her escape.

If you’re not one of the 11-plus million who have watched this fan film, keep in mind that this is not a film of the “GLaDOS and companion cubes are so cute!” variety. In fact, GLaDOS doesn’t make an appearance here at all. I guess she was too busy doing ads for Pacific Rim.

Instead this seven-minute piece is dark and moody, with a musical score to match.

The dark mood of this short film is likely what landed Dan Tractenberg the directing job for Y: The Last Man.

Judging from the Portal fan film, Tractenberg should have no problem pulling off the dark universe of Y: The Last Man. And, if reports are correct, he will have the benefit of working from a script adaptation done by the writer of the comic book series, Brian K. Vaughan.  Vaughan is a popular comic book and television series.

If you have yet to see Tractenberg’s Portal fan film — or just want to watch it again — click the video below.  Recommended viewing instructions from the film’s YouTube page suggest that you watch it in HD fullscreen with the sound up.  I’m inclined to agree.

I did not know about this Portal fan movie.  Thanks for the heads up GBTV.   Very cool to see how a fan effort can generate enough attention to give someone a break in their career.

i found that trailer or whatever the portal clip was boring… or was that litrally the whole short film :S

A brilliantly done short film, I can see why New Line picked him up. He has a great eye for building tension, he uses music to great effect and with no dialogue at all the film told a easy to grasp and understand story.
