The competition of the future is going to be for the all in one box. TV, Internet, Gaming, communications. all in one. I don't know about you guys but my entertainment center is a mess of wires and black boxes, it looks terrible in behind.

This will be probably beyond the next-gen, but it's what Apple and Valve and experimenting with, and what TV providers are terrified of. Netflix on our consoles is just the first step and TV on the internet are just the first steps toward a combination of all of the above.

(In one box that looks cool.)

What we are seeing the end of is the end of the Video Game Console as a box you just play games on.

The consoles of the future will are platforms for managing all of your household entertainment on one machine. That is the transition we are moving towards. These devices will become even more like PCs then they currently are today, and they will have tons of built in functionality. These boxes will also play video games, but they need to primarily be designed to be multifaceted.

Playstation, Nintendo, and X-box need to not only change in pretty dynamic ways compared to their current generations, but in terms of the concept of what their box can do in their marketing strategy.

Pretty much, all of these products need to be completely rebranded as "Entertainment Systems" rather than "Gaming Consoles".

Apple TV, which will be out in a few years, it is designed to be an "Entertainment Console" rather than a gaming platform, but the Apple TV will almost certainly be able to play video games and will likely have a gaming controller of some kind. It is the kind of product that has appeal no only with gamers, but to non-gamers, and that means larger mass market appeal.

If Sony, Nintendo, or Microsoft are not ready to compete with that head to head they will loose.

Someone get this geek laid and reintroduced back to society. Last time I checked I didn't hear the normal city based kid say "oh heck I can't wait to get home to play my mmo" No it's I can't wait to get home and play NBA 2013 or Madden 2013, or a more common Play Call of Duty (add number and name) on my Xbox 360 or PS3." This guy reminds me of the villain guy on grandma's boy, I can see this quack going,"meep meep danger I might have a chance for error meep beep!"
The only ones really playing the mmo scene in America (including myself) Are usually (I said usually which means the few exceptions) white or asian and either in their 20's or 30's (rarity bit older). Then teens give the games a shot (few rarities that hold their patience level) but unlike most MMO's where you have to have a decent amount of patience these teens (for the most part) lose that patience (hint The secret world starter mission/too much talking lol). Where as Console games, hold the start right up and play, pause, call friends, come back, and still chat over the console with friends. On that note I love pc games/mmo's and console games pretty much the same. But the truth is, saying consoles are gonna poof very soon, is like saying blizzard inc is gonna be bankrupt Monday morning. Of course this is my opinion, i'm nor geek nor sheek. I'm just your avg 37 year old white pseudo geek.

Dead? Possibly. The fact is, there are really two types when it comes to how gamers want their games. There's mobile/ handheld, and then there's the gamers that want to sit down, get cozy and put in a session that way. Now, because computers are so readily available and easy to upgrade individual parts, it does kind of mean that the brand new console that comes out will be shortly lived as the same technology is released for computers. I think if the console world, and just gaming world in general wants to be saved/ further advanced, the gap between console, hand-held, and PC needs to be bridged.

You are very wrong here. You don't have to be able to tinker with the hardware and software guts of your computer to be a PC gamer. A lot of really dumb 12 year-olds play PC games. Also, most hardware upgrades come with step-by-step instructions now. You don't have to be a greasy nerd to play PC games anymore.

Consoles aren't anywhere near dead. It is much more enjoyable to a lot of people to sit on their couch with a controller and play a game on their big screen than it is to be hunched over a mouse and keyboard in front of their monitor.
Online multiplayer games are fun, but nothing beats sitting down with some friends in the same room and blowing shit up.
Yes more and more people have computers. This doesn't mean that people realize what they have versus what they need. I know people that have purchased games that wouldn't run on the hardware they currently had and were very upset. Others thought they didn't have enough hardware (even though I told them they did) and spent a ton of money on unneeded upgrades. Dropping ~500 every 5-10 years is much more feasible for a lot of people I believe.

It's called Moore's Law, I believe.
Normally I don't quote Wikipedia, but You may find this interesting.
"This trend has continued for more than half a century. 2005 sources expected it to continue until at least 2015 or 2020.[note 1][12] However, the 2010 update to the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors has growth slowing at the end of 2013,[13] after which time transistor counts and densities are to double only every 3 years."

Do some reading before You write off the top of Your obviously uneducated Head.

the consoles mentioned above are all way out of date considering their performance. They were amazing for their time, but with PC's pushing 30 teraflops with quad sli, they have more than 10 times the power. The games that are produced for consoles are also very linear, have tons of loading screens, and very limited re-playability.
