Runic Game‘s Torchlight II is set to release some time this summer and Max Schaefer‘s been thinking a bit about what’s going to happen after that.
Some of you may remember the initial Torchlight related announcement from Perfect World — back before the first game even game out. Since then you may have been wondering where they stand on that particular project.
It seems that at present nothing has been officially decided on the subject, as Shaefer responded to a question about in a recent interview, saying:
We don’t know what we’re doing in MMO next or ever or what. That’s kind of the big plan is to keep expanding the Torchlight world.
So, while they are planning on expanding on the game, there’s a possibility that it might not be in MMO form.
However, if there is to be a Torchlight MMO, it’s not going to use the standard MMO setup. According to Schaefer:
We would not want to do a traditional [MMO] at all. We’d adapt it in many ways to Torchlight. It’d be an MMO in so far as everyone’s playing in the world of Torchlight, but it may radically different. I think it would keep our creativity alive, not just to do traditional MMO.
It will be interesting to see what the MMO turns out like, should they decide to do it. I hope they will. But for now, Torchlight II will have to be good enough.
