SimCity Offline

Modder, UKAzzer shows Reddit how to play SimCity Offline.

Since it’s launch, the biggest complaint about SimCity has been it’s always online mode. Whether it be as an intended part of the gameplay design as Maxis and EA state, or just an attempt to hide DRM behind a “feature” of the game, one thing is certain. The inability to play SimCity offline has hurt a lot of players’ experiences with the game.

Of course, it stands to reason that some gamers would take things into their own hands and many stated that someone would have a workaround in no time.

It appears they were right.

Enter UKAzzer…

Modder UKAzzer recently posted a YouTube video on Reddit showing him poking around in SimCity’s debug mode. He discovered that this mode would allow him to do things such as edit the highways that connect the cities outside of the boundaries, eliminating the “too small” feeling that a lot of players have complained about.

UKAzzer also modded the population count — something else players have complained about — to show the real population instead of the “fluffed” count that exists in the game.

OFFLINE MODE!!!

Yes! Okay, the part you people really want. (But admit it, that other stuff is pretty cool too.) UKAzzer figured out how to disable SimCity’s disconnection timer and set it to unlimited to prevent the game from kicking you out after about 20 minutes of offline play.

He does note that there are some things you won’t be able to do in this mode. Region features aren’t available and if you want to save your city you will have to connect to the servers.

EA’s Response?

Eurogamer contacted EA about this and unfortunately just got a reply saying that the company doesn’t comment on rumors.

Of course, it’s pretty safe to assume that the devs are already looking at how to fix this. But, even if they do, it does prove that even in a limited capacity, the game can be played without going online.

A good way to make it looks like offline mode is to have a server emulator for this game.

I am simply amazed. And Glad that someone took a stand against what EA has done to consumers.

Take a stand with your wallet. Consumers have all the power.

Not commenting on all the stuff they left out = “Ignore the man behind the curtain!”

The always online is what is keeping me from buying the game. I want to play it so bad but, who says my connection will always be stable.

I’m the same. I want to buy this game very badly. I’ve played the others to death. But i won’t let myself become part of the problem.

  • BabyChooChoo

What? SimCity CAN run in an offline mode? I am flabbergasted. I could have sworn it absolutely needed to be online at all times like EA told us. We all know they would never lie to us.

Something something something always-on drm is the future something something something.

If it has been proven that the game runs its own calculations, I wonder what legal ramifications people can hit EA with about the statements they made about the servers being a requirement.

  • Mafiagryphon

This video is just a rumor like Gary Busey.  Just because I see his videos doesn’t mean he is real or director John Badham would ever comment on him.  Gamebreaker, how dare you spread this rumor.

Well if they patch it, players will just go back to simply not buying the game.

Either way EA’s fuckin retarded and so is every other developer who thinks that

    A. having an always online mode is necessary and/or beneficial to a game that’s clearly been successful without it

    and…

    B. is actually ready to support the ginormous influx of players on your servers. You as a developer will NEVER be ready unless you purposely overestimate your player base on day one which requires spending money on resources you potentially won’t need……which they won’t ever do for that very reason.

I do not understand why Devs are starting to feel the need to be online all the time. I just don’t get it. Is it easier for them? Cuz with launches like D3 and now SC you can bet it’ll be easier because of the lack of stress on your servers due to a stunted player base with all your other potential buyers going off and choosing not to deal with the bullshit….and asking for refunds while they’re at it.

It is a moronic gesture that lends nothing meaningful to the game it’s been implemented in.

I fully support whatever is done to this game to make it playable, be it legal or not. I really do cuz this is becoming ridiculously stupid.

  • CheveyoSD

Someone on Reddit found that the game actually has offline saves. It just deletes them every time it does the whole online check thing.

I understand the need for developers to fight piracy, but if you are ruining the experience for paying customers, you’ve got your priorities all mixed up. Protecting IP is important, but it’s more important to promote and profit from IP.

Amen. At this rate, EA will be launching Spore 5 times a year and then abandoning the PC due to loss of profitability.

I haven’t gotten the game, but I have been following the media outlets and the official forums. Not only is the fact that online isn’t required shocking, some core elements have made me decide to not pick the game up as much as I like SimCity games. The purported GlassBox engine controlling individual sims and having them go to/from work /home has been busted with a video showing the sims lining up and just going into the next available house. They don’t work anywhere specific, and don’t live anywhere specific.

What’s worse is the several videos now showing evidence that the RCI triangle is basically irrelevant in this game. Several people have made 100% residential cities in regions with no other cities, and those cities are generating profits. They are building basic utilities, but the majority of the sims are just sitting at home and hitting the parks for shopping… and somehow paying taxes with magical money that comes from nowhere. Industry and Commerce is completely necessary in this model. It really seems as if, all the online issues aside, the core game is broken anyway.

I’m glad I am very cautious when it comes to EA games, these days.

The best and only real way to fight piracy is to make a game worth purchasing.

That’s why you see such a heavy influence of multi-player in recent years. Games like cod will never really need DRM. It’s because the biggest draw of the game is the multi-player, that you need to connect to their servers for. Someone who pirates the game will get to play the single player and then i suppose if they wanted they could find private servers. But those private servers will never equal the experience and amount of players as just paying for the game. And most people don’t want to invest the time to figure it all out.

I almost think EA tried to do this, realized the multi-player wasn’t good enough and just went for always online. The truth is that piracy does need to be dealt with someway, but it is in no way as dire as these big companies would have you believe. If the video game industry takes a nosedive it won’t be because of piracy, it will be, as it often is, a result of the people who make the product.

I have no problems with the online but offline would be nice too letting work on your single player ideals

  • KillingJoke

Ok i know that pirating is not the way forward for the gaming business, but what do you expect EA for the way you have gone about this!. So this hack will be repackaged into the Sim City game, loaded up to the torrent sites to be downloaded for free.. wont take them long to sort out the game saves problem if not already sorted!!

  • GamerEnvy

Really would love to play but I will not have Origin ever again on my PC.

  • Krzysztof Kotarba

imo maxis should change name from simcity to simquarter
