SMITE, the free-to-play MOBA from Hi-Rez Studios, is now taking pre-orders.

Wait, what?

Don’t panic, fans… the game will still be free-to-play, but you can start letting Hi-Rez take your money now — which you were going to let them do eventually — by pre-ordering a $20 package that gets you 10 additional gods for free, as well as guaranteed access to the closed beta, which begins May 31.

It’s a sweet deal, especially for players who were impressed enough with SMITE that they were definitely going to play anyway. And it may have been inspired by ArenaNet offering similar guaranteed beta access for Guild Wars 2 pre-purchases.

Does this sound like a great deal for you? If you’re a SMITE fan, will you take Hi-Rez up on this offer? Let us know in the comments below!

This isn’t odd for Hi-Rez. They did a pre-order package with Tribes:Ascend as well.

Didn’t know about this. Looks interesting. I will probably check it out when released.

This game really interests me, might consider a preorder.  Thanks for the info.

Global Agenda was an amazing game… so not sure what he was getting at.  Only reason the game dropped off was because the hacking got way out of hand.

Also RIFT did the exact same thing with pre-order allowing access to beta.

“First person shooter vs third person shooter”

sure, give it a genre change, everyone seems to like having their own special little genre nowadays.

I have already purchased this.  Love the game and it is really fun.  It got tons of attention at PAX East.

Combat looks good worth the investment, actually engaging combat than UI-based hotkey bashing types MMOs and finally brings a third person experience to MOBAs that looks promising.
