Blizzard-Sanctioned Starcraft MMO, Starcraft Universe, follows an alternate reality in which Kerrigan has died.
A Starcraft MMO is upon us; no it is not the subject of Blizzard’s elusive Titan project, it is Starcraft Universe, a Starcraft II game mod being built by Upheaval Arts. It takes place 11 years after Wings of Liberty, and tells a very different ending.
“StarCraft Universe tells a story set in an alternate reality, where the ending of StarCraft II:Wings of Liberty has a grim conclusion for Kerrigan. Without the Queen of Blades to stop the hybrid’s assault, the protoss are overwhelmed and defeated. In this reality, what would the survivors of these shattered worlds do? StarCraft Universe tells this story.”
Of course the original game is an RTS, so a Starcraft MMO would look and feel very, very different.
“The objective of this game is to experience the universe of Starcraft from a third person view and master challenges and missions. The focus of the game is to have a team of players/friends creating/customizing their own hero character which they use to battle together through enemy forces and powerful bosses.”
What makes the mod unique is that Blizzard has actually sanctioned the Starcraft MMO and plans on releasing it through Battle.net. It isn’t being made by Blizzard at all, so the guys at Upheaval Arts need to look somewhere else for resources. They are hoping to collect a minimum of $80,000 from backers to be able to release Starcraft Universe this February.
When the Starcraft MMO mod is released, it will have two playable races, Terran and Protoss. The ability to play a Zerg is part of a stretch goal that we can all look forward to. Other stretch goals include PvP, female races, and if the one million mark is hit, they will build the entire Koprulu sector for players to explore.
The Starcraft Universe Kickstarter page has a lot of information, including a few crazy rewards for backers. It is obvious that the mod has been under way for a while (two years) and has really come along. Excuse me while I get out my credit card….
